After running constantly for all these years, i think it has earned it's retirement. It shows that left switched on and running a lot of gear will last, gear that is only used a few times a year tends to fail more quickly. I have found this to be true with laserdisc players, leave them unused and chances are that it will fail to load or recognise discs, if you are lucky a new belt and cleaning the laser will get it back working but not always, grease goes stiff with lack of use as we know with record changers.

I have another one, might even be the same model that a PSU swap (if its the same) might be in order to see if it is the PSU causing the problem.

A PSU swop will at least prove that the original is at fault. Please keep us updated of any progress.@@12voltvids

Likely the motor / laser drive IC lower left of the signal board with the two metal tabs on it for heat sinking. Replaced a bunch of those in PS2s back in the day same symptoms all motors dead and the focus and tracking coils on the laser didn't work. That IC drives everything the loading motor, sled motor, spindle motor, focus and tracking coils. It runs hot and much like the vertical output on CRT sets is highly stressed and prone to failure. Not worth replacing even when this DVD player was new especially with all of the run time on all of the other components.

Thats what I suspect, or a supply has been lost.

Dave, thanks for posting even though it's a non fix. Sometimes I get discouraged when I can't figure out a problem child and end up spending way more time than I should. I suppose experience not only makes you a better technician but also helps you know when to fold.

I have a little bit of nostalgia for almost every medium. I still use Compact Cassettes, VHS and V2000 video from time to time. Also reel to reel tape occasionally. Vinyl records are my main source of music. But i never, ever use DVDs or CDs anymore. Never liked them, never used them much.

Keep doing your thing. I appreciate that you take your time and don't worry about trying to cut it down to 10 min or something. Nice to see the whole process 😊

Interesting, kind of longevity test. My dvd player is also from 2004, bought it new as well, but much less used than yours. Worked the last time I used, but at this age, probably any time can be the last time it works. I remember the sales person recommended keeping the receipt well on hand for possible warranty replacement, but here we are 19 years later, didn't need any warranty repairs, have never even opened the cover so far. The shop where I bought it is long gone by now, haha.

It’s missing a 12v line for the drive ic check the 8v line that sounds suspicious

Wonder if that 1.7V supply is the one that is the problem. It seems like an odd voltage. I would suspect that the motors use between 6 and 12V. The others seemed right, 3.3, 5, and 12. 3.3 and 5 are probably what runs the electronics, and 12 may run some of the motors or cooling.

I believe I have another unit very similar if not identical. Night be worth a voltage comparison as I still think it is a missing voltage. The motor drive IC has 5, but I believe it should have 5 and 12 but don't have a pinout for it

I'd say you got your money's worth out of that DVD player, a couple times over. 19 years is a really good run for something like that IMHO.

19 years isn't particularly impressive, it's kinda average for these things. I see older dvd players than this one all the time in secondhand stores, working perfectly. I've got a 2003 Sony here in like-new condition and I've never had to do anything to it, but I've only had it two years and put a hundred or so hours on it. The number of hours of usage is what would be impressive if anything is.

What a bugger, perhaps the main controller chip died of heat, no display no deck operation. If the controller is made as a all in one system controller then there would be a chance. But its a waste of time, im sure the charity shop has another victim to buy lol 😀

what is the point in running your own modulators with constant content? why not just put something on when you want to watch it. Surely you'd get sick of seeing the same content over and over again.

I don't watch all the time.I have a 500gb hard drive with several hundred jazz concerts recorded on a stereo modulator. Its in random playback mode. I have another with scenery (eye candy) that the music is fed from a different source so different music for pictures. This one is just stuff recorded off tv. It just runs all the time chewing up power. Its not like I watch these over and over. I tune in a TV once in a while and watch for a few minutes when there is nothing to watch. Much I have never seen because when it comes up I am not watching. Might watch it for 10 minutes or so when waiting for something else to come on. Other times I just have one of my scenery videos playing that I use for testing video equipment. In fact when it's not running old episodes of cops it is usually running the oregon coast or California coast or aquarium video on repeat. Stuff I shot back before I was shooting stuff in HD.
