Breakdown also takes place in zener diode but the difference between zener and avalanche breakdown is that - In Avalanche, breakdown takes place at high voltage whereas in zener, breakdown takes place at low voltage And whatever the process of breakdown, such diodes in which bteakdown process is used are called Zener diodes.
