I think the key factor was Zelenski's leadership in the darkest of times. When other leaders would have run, he stood his ground in Ukraine, with one of the greatest war time quotes "I don't need a ride, I need ammunition". This is the kind of leadership the west respects and will stand by.

I was pleased to hear yesterday that Ukraine will encourage English language instruction in its schools. The West has lots of social problems, as do all human societies, but the paramount value is respect for the individual and his or her freedoms, along with the essential protective tool, rule of law. Communication with western societies will be an important weapon going forward, as Ukraine continues to support its young democracy and rid the country of residual historic Bolshevik corruption.

But the winter drive from Crimea back to Kiev showed me the roadways and countryside. The Nation has great potential once Russia is expelled. I think the US support for Ukraine although massive, was calculated and sensitive to its NATO allies concerns for an escalation that could widen the war in Europe. Initially from defensive weapons; but when Poland, the Baltic Sates, the Czech Republic and the UK initiated a willingness to supply main battle tanks, medium range missiles, artillery and eventually fighter jets-the US, Germany and others followed suit. So, the US “shift” matched its Allies’ stance.

Great respect for the young and capable leadership of Ukraine, and the work Mr. Yermak has done. Incredible respect for the Ukrainian Armed Forces and leadership for their resolute, and determined work to reclaim their lands and full sovereignty from the illegal, and criminal Russian invaders. As for American support of Ukraine, as well the entire region, and the Nato Alliance, this support should never be in any way an element of one party support, and a tearing down of the other party. This is much bigger than that. This war absolutely requires across the board, across the aisle unified support until the job is complete. This is not a time for backbiting, and division, this is bigger than that. This is a moment of unwavering unyielding determination. There is a high cost for doing the right thing but the absence of doing the right thing is always far more costly. We must now do the right thing, it is time to stop measuring our response, and just simply respond. The situation calls for our leadership, and strength. We've done a great job to this point. Cessation, and a negotiation of appeasement with a regime that cannot be trusted is far more wasteful than doing the right thing. Thank you, 🇺🇸🇺🇦 Glory to God, Victory for Ukraine, Rise Free Nations!

How is that even comprable? Afghanistan was a partially/mostly hostile country that we invaded to conduct counterterrorism operations and we subsequently got bogged down with nation building efforts. The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan at least bears some similarity, but it’s still quite a stretch, not to mention that it would undermine your point due to the Soviet’s retreat (which lead to the collapse of The entire USSR) being caused, at least partially, by The US gov’t supporting various “mujahideen” rebel groups .

Unless NATO gets involved now, NATO's task much later will be more difficult and many more will die needlessly. NATO needs to give Russia a week's notice to withdraw its troops and then inform them that NATO will become involved with an added warning that if they use nuclear weapons, mutual destruction is assured. It's really this simple, but our politicians are fools and cowards who care only about themselves.

It is really sad that Russian people cannot live in peace with their cousins and neighbours, the Uhrainian people. Left alone I think that they would live in Peace and harmony, but at this time it seems impossible and there may never be peace between the two. Surely Peace is worth fighting for, rather than war. "Live and let live" was a phrase often used by the men in the trenches during WW1 because they recognised that this was a war caused , not by them, but by perpetrators elsewhere...The high and mighty of Empires driven by nationalism and nothing else. It's the same today.... Nationalism and Empires at war with each other......fighting in a land called Ukraine. Really it is the West and Nato supporting Ukraine against Russia. Given a conventional war, this would have been over in weeks or a few months, just like the war in Iraq, but it isn't for one single fact...the Nuclear bomb. The question still remains whether this war wll escalate to nuclear status. Can anyone beleive that Russia will be defeated or the West will give in and stop supporting the brave Ukrainians.? In reality, this is a war not wished by the Russian people or the Ukrainian people, but inflicted on them by other forces.... Just like what happened in WW1 between peoples who had no cause to go to war with each other, Tha film "Dr. Strangelove" speaks volumes about war and the nutcases responsible for war.

More probably this number reflects killed and wounded combined. Not even the Ukrainian media, which obligingly parrots the 'official' tallies on a daily basis believes it. They often refer to other non-Ukrainian stats as a counter-balance. For example last week, Ukrainska Pravda - while listing the 'official' numbers of Russian dead, tanks/artillery/etc., destroyed below its masthead - reported in an article that the best estimate of Russian casualties was 55,000 dead and 160,000 wounded.

A few of us that watched russia's performance in Chechnya in the mid 90's then again in the late 90's. Then South Ossetia in 2008 were not too surprised when russia did poorly in 2022. I personally had a sick feeling in my stomach that russia would do much better after Feb 24. Even though my head thought Ukraine would do well I never dreamed this well of course. It's funny . . . All the indicators were there but I still thought russia would 'roll' somewhat & the west would lose interests like in 2014. I had been a few times between the Chechnyan wars. And the sentiment in russia was seething towards Chechnya. In 1999 they were absolutely convinced they had been attacked in the Moscow apartment bombings. No one suspected it had been putin in his accession to power. This was at a time when free speech was very much a thing in russia.
