In fact I'd go as far as saying that they started working on the sky islands around the end of 2020 / early 2021, for various reasons. One of them is that almost all of the islands they first showed are not in the final game, except the "tutorial island"... and that was almost fully covered in clouds back then... and when you increased the contrast of the image, you could see that it's completely unfinished behind those clouds (everything is basic cubes, even the trees and co., while now we see those areas and they just look like normal sky island areas). So it's clear to me that everything regarding the sky islands in those early trailers (other than the main concepts of the zonai powers and co.) is very unrepresentative of the final game. This also indicates that the sky islands are indeed a "smaller part of the game" and are likely where side activities such as this game's version of shrines take place and the majority of the development was spent on "something else that's more important", which is probably the caves and probably where the dungeons take place.

@@simonrockstream no the older build bit is far more likely, all recent footage has enemies with purely unorthodox horns and not what they had in the first game, there'd be no reason to keep the old variant around intentionally

Haven’t seen anybody else mention this yet, but did you notice the stones with the swirling green energy are literally tear shaped? If these tear shaped rocks are going to be falling down from the sky islands to Hyrule below, then that undoubtedly is where the name Tears Of the Kingdom is coming from.

I find the use of color interesting. Blue is associated with Naryu, the goddess of wisdom. This makes sense given the sheikah’s technology. Zelda is given control over this part. Green is associated with Farore, the goddess of courage. Link is given control over this part. I wonder if this idea plays into TotK with the green shrines? And obviously Red is Din the goddess of power, but Ganon has full control over that part.

I think you pretty much nailed it at the end there. Let's not forget that the shrines send us deep underground. So, it could be that these are the inverse, sending us into the sky for some kind of trial. Especially now that underground appears to be evil territory

This is a cool possibility. I think that the magic arm is bringing back the magic meter found in other Zelda games and collecting the vials on Link's hip will increase the meter. It could be that these stones are sources of magic and can refill the vials as there is no other natural source for magic found in BoTW. The shrines could refill like wells over time, so the "inactive" stones have already been used to refill Link's magic. Glowing stones are full of magic and can be used the refill the magic vials. Just a thought.

It's worth pointing out that the first time we saw a spiral of green energy, it was presumably used to seal Ganondorf. So it makes sense that the stones surrounded by a similar green spiral would be in a sort of sealed state as well.

It's suggested by Zelda herself that they may not be able to win this fight and fitting with the Ouroboros cycle of that universe and the reoccurring theme of sealing, if the goddess Hylia is directly involved and Demise is somehow involved (what with the assumed destruction of the Master Sword). Is it possible that she's having Link recreate Skyloft to evacuate the Hylians again? Truly and completely repeating history from the beginning, untold millennia before, to now. inb4 the next game is Skyward Sword 2 or it's revealed that Skyward Sword both happens before and after the events of this game. i do think they are just a re designed shrine maybe, i like the idea of the energy spirals being used to make them more visible in the environment also.

I was thinking a similar thing with revealing the islands! Maybe there are no islands visible, but those swirly rocks allow you to jump up to the sky. The island it brings you to is a sort of “shrine replacement” that, upon completion, rewards you with whatever they’ll use instead of the spirit orbs and then reveals all the islands in the area

I think that the spirals will be the equivalent of spirit orbs, links hand interacting with it to gain energy or power to change in return for health or stamina or any new forms of bars in the game

My guess is it will be a place to fast travel and refill those green flasks Link is shown to have. If you have played Elden Ring, I got the impression it may act similar to sites of grace where you could fast travel and refill your flasks in that game.

Hey Zeltik! Maybe even the shot of Link with the Golden Light and the Master Sword we got in the delay announcement a year ago could even be atop the giant stone tower we see on those islands you think might be the tutorial! Maybe the goal is to explore and solve puzzles to open up the tower, and the goal is to climb to the top to commune with that Golden Light, kind of like how the goal of the Great Plateau was visiting all four shrines and then meeting King Rhoam atop the Temple of Time?

8:57 Link being able to dive down to these islands from so high up in the sky either means he can teleport all the way to the top of the map somehow, or there are more sky islands above these sky islands like you theorized. (which might explain the spiral stones in the sky - 8:33)

Glad you mentioned the jump from the E3 2021 trailer, with all the new TotK news I realized it probably overshadowed that clip.

5:10 I was theorizing almost the opposite, the not glowing stones are the ones that Link has NOT touched. And it looks like, the one that isn't touched, has another blocky/green Zonai aura laying dormant on top of it. I think these are bosses you have to fight to activate them. And once activated they seem like they could be one of two things: A) A way to get into the sky, or B) Dungeons. It seems to me like these are the "Tears" of the kingdom. Awesome videos, love your content and my hype has been revitalized for this game, but I hope to all of Hylia there are dungeons time around

I really believe you are spot on with the "call an island from above" thing. From a gameplay perspective, if Link has access to the paraglider and the flying machines, it's pretty much impossible to restrain the player to a certain order of islands (or at least something like a final island). This theory would fix this in a great way.

Would be super cool if on top of that you could move the sky islands and spots of Hyrule around, like the great plateau or the lost woods, like a puzzle on a giant scale and it would warrant exploring Hyrule again under a new light.

The reason that there were no Shrines in the center of Hyrule in BoTW is likely because that's where the DBG fight is. Since there is likely no DBG fight in TotK, it's not unreasonable that Nintendo would want to dump one (or its equivalent) there.

6:30 oh that could hint at going back to the style of early game exploration with a few Temples, and then a big turning point that unlocks the later 2/3 of the game with a drastic shift to the world.
