Zeiss Paved The Way, But Companies Didn't Learn (Planar vs Modern)

Комедия

Zeiss made the best lenses for many years, they got bored of it they were so good. Modern glass is not the same. They focus on obtaining the sharpest brick wall pictures corner to corner, because that's what you hobo photographers test in your review videos. Meanwhile, real glass has character. Let's do a Q&A comparing my new Zeiss Planar 85mm f1.4 to some other legendary vintage lenses like my Canon EF 85mm f1.2 mark i, and flat garbage like the Nikkor Z 85mm f1.2 S and 85mm f1.8G lens.

    Compared to the zeiss? You really saw it that way? I’m on team CamCon on this one, the zeiss was “deeper” to my eyes, and as an owner of Sony, Canon, and Zeiss gear, there is definitely a Zeiss pop. I shoot zooms out of necessity most of the time professionally, but I always know it’s going to be easier to edit when I can use a Zeiss, moreso than other primes I own as well. Maybe it’s all psychological, I’m a skeptic at heart, but I don’t think so based on experience.

    I might be able to see what you call 3D-Pop. The Zeiss gives a slight 'halo' (extending about an inch including fall off) around your body whereas the Nikon 1.2 is absolutely clean (no halo) in transition between your body and the background. So, it looks more clinical. The 'halo' I see around your body with the Zeiss is especially noticeable when you move around a bit. Interesting. Edit - the Nikon G has some haloing but is harder to notice because it's lower contrast overall (not softer just lower contrast)

    Fujifilm's Reala Ace addition is great, so far only a little bit of testing, but I love green & blue landscape SOOC photos it produced. Hope, Fuji will catch up with autofocus, as I'm shooting also people, and dogs, cats and birds. Or, that Panasonic would release successor to Lumix GX9 with PDAF. But, it would be a hard decision about switching back to MFT.

    @@jcar4522 well, I had previously purchased X-T4, that I returned due to autofocus limitations (I didn't do good research before purchase, my bad). I bough X-S20 with X-Processor 5 and autofocus is much better. Not perfect, but usable. So, it's getting better, but slowly. Panasonic abandoned GX line, that I liked, and there wasn't single camera with PDAF, but subject tracking on GX85 was great, didn't lose subject almost never. But, without PDAF it often missed depth/distance of focus, even though subject was tracked and not lost. Olympus's tracking is unusable, and they put animal detect only to their flagship OM-1 camera. I don't like these big lines in Panasonic and Olympus. But, looks like none of them properly support small lines of cameras. Fuji is only manufacturer, that focuses on APS-C exclusively, and not as a bridge / lower segment to eventually upgrade to Full Frame tier of their cameras like Canon and Nikon does. So, I hope Fujifilm catches up with autofocus.

    This is hilarious! What are your camera settings? Are you shooting in RAW or JPEG with picture control? It's hard to get the jest! I love watching your videos-they're pure comic gold. I haven't found the perfect camera myself, but I get a good pop out of a Nikon 70-200mm zoom lens, even with higher ISO. I also use warm colors on the subject and cooler tones for the background. Many birders do that, like Steve Perry. By the way, are you controlling the scene while your face is in shadow? Is this beyond the camera's dynamic range and settings? There are so many variables to consider to get the max out of your equipment. The old cliché holds true: the equipment is only as good as its operator. Keep up the great work on your channel. Peace out.

    I’m a musician and photographer, both industries chock full of snake oil and misguided pixel/wave peepers, and I’m a skeptic at heart. The zeiss pop is real. My take is it’s perfect imperfection, actually a micro softness or blur, perhaps a micro muting of dynamic range (similar to compression in audio) that ties all the elements in the image together, as opposed to most sharpness monsters that present things in layers. Similar phenomenon: It’s the smoothness and lack of dynamic range that creates more depth and engagement of the whole frame in golden hour light vs mid day light even on the same lens. Are these deltas measurable? I assume yes, I’m just not aware how or care that much :) . How could “muting dynamic range” be a thing? Ever hear of hi con and low con filters when printing photos / Using color filters to gain or lose contrast in B&W? These concepts can apply to colors your retina responds to as well. Is it not feasible that companies that have worked on optics for nearly 2 centuries might have some tricks up their sleeves in design, glass formulation, coatings, etc that have subtle yet real impact on their results? I think it’s possible, could be wrong, and most importantly, I don’t care, I know what I like ;) . Edit to add to already too long comment: I found an analogy i think fits. Is the Precision Bass the only bass instrument that should be used in pop/rock music? Of course not. But is there any other bass design that’s easier to mix in pop/rock music? Also, of course not.

    It seems to be wrong exposure when aperture go 5,6, especially leaves become terrible almost clipping, both lenses.5:07 12:17 . Or maybe blurring make clipped parts less annoying.

    There are some who feel walking barefoot on the ground beneficially discharges the body, reducing free radicals in the body, among other things. Now, on the 3d pop thing, most people do not have lenses that have/show it, so they don't have an idea of what it is. Your effort to show it in your videos and let people know what lenses will produce it is commendable. Bokeh, sorry, Toneh, is not character.

    You should probably look up F-Stops Here and do some 75 1.8 Videography, I don't think you understand the usages for these primes, either their for work, low light, fashion, or nifty primes

    The Sony mirroless conspiracy started it all with complex lenses needed to make the cameras smaller. Shorter distance between lens and sensor. Small bodies=bigger lenses with more elements. It's physics . Video also uses flat raw profiles to color grade the videos. Hollywood used this technique when they shot their scenes with filters and lenses. Sony destroyed DSLR and the vintage lenses. This is why Nikon resisted changing the F mount.

    Has it occurred to some folks that maybe it's not that some audio or visual difference is imaginary / placebo, but that not all of us have same senses. If one can't tell the difference is a good thing one can save $$$. Be happy for yourself but leave others alone :)

    In the Zf, with subject detection off, the face eye tracking doesn't work whatever settings you may have. Its not detecting any face thats why its not focusing properly. Its just looking for bright contrasty areas favouring vertical lines. I think the 3D pop you mentioning doesn't exist, if it existed it can be measured between all lenses. What you are referring to is Micro-contrast vs Flat look, which can mostly be achieved in post. Your face looks much darker in the Canon 1.2 whereas in the Nikon 1.8 its much brighter and goes for a balanced flat look overall. I have used the Sony A7iv+200-600mm f6.3 & A7R4+Tamron 70-180 f2.8 side by side with Nikon Z8+70-200 f2.8. I don't see any difference in Autofocus for animals atleast, even tested with the A1. Nikon Z8 was better in birds after the 2.0 update & also the Auto Area AF. And Sony has that yellow cast over photos which takes around 15-20mins only to fix that in post. The Z8 with the blackout free viewfinder was a brand-switching feature at that price. At this current point, there's no difference in Canon, Sony & Nikon. You must make decisions based on lenses you want & prices you can afford for specific features. Now happily own two Z8 plus the 500mm F4 FL & Z 70-200 f2.8. Sold all sony gear. Decision based on long lens stabilisation, Nikon miles ahead of Sony (Not the same for vloging lens, basically its the opposite). The blackout free viewfinder. The availability of a super sharp good condition used Big Prime, the 500mm F4 for around 3700$.

    I didn't say subject detection was off. There's a setting that says AF when subject not detected. When that is turned on, it has a very hard time acquiring subject so I turned that off. Of course human eye detection was turned on for this video.

  • @stripes_in_raw

    @stripes_in_raw

    @@cameraconspiracies I keep that always turned on, with the Z8. It uses the legacy autofocus method when the subject is not detected, works great for wildlife. In the Z8, you can also track subjects with subjects detection off with 3d Tracking like in Sony but that option is also not available in Zf. You should also set the Af sensitivity to the absolute least amount on the Nikons for staying on the subject all the time even if something comes in front. And if you can, compare the video stability on the Zf or Z6iii with 180-600mm & A7Iv or A7Siii with the 200-600mm. Do it in both normal and sports mode. You have to feel the difference at least once without any post stabilisation.
