Dustin-Just purchased the A7III and am looking for wide-angle lens. This review of both was VERY helpful. Appreciate the huge amount of time for video review AND actual samples. Love your reviews Dustin. In the Lightroom Lens Correction Module the built-in profile is for chromatic aberration only . Click on the "i" Built-in Lens Profile applied to see the pop-up box info.

I think there's a lot of optical similarities. I would only choose the Milvus version if I wanted to shoot the lens on two systems (Canon and Sony, for example). If you are only a Sony shooter, you might as well get the lighter version with autofocus.

Great review. I'd love to see a comparison shootout with the 16-35f4 & 16-35 GMaster, I haven't found much comparing these to the zeiss primes.

And I'm afraid I don't have time to do one now, either. I'm mostly focused on these two Batis lenses and have a number of other lenses I'm already reviewing.

I had rented the batis25 along with the loxia21 for Christmas! Man this Lens is exceptional, it is small, Light, easy to use, sealed and doesn’t appoint in the in department. 25 is a really good sweet spot getting foreground and background nicely balanced and it’s great for storytelling and surprisingly good in the portrait department🙂 Actually so much that I spent over 2k for the Milvus25 for that 1.4! It’s such a dynamic lens!

Lightroom profile corrections seem to mess up resolution and sharpness: all that stretching has to do that. I try to avoid using corrections as I consider a bit of distortion the less of two evils.

That does happen sometimes, and I know what you mean. There are some lenses I too prefer uncorrected.

Couldn't in-camera lens corrections be disabled so Lightroom can do it all to avoid the reverse vignetting? I'm currently waiting on my a7III to switch from Nikon to Sony so I could be wrong. That said, I noticed that DXO's software packages have separate correction profiles for many lenses separately for with and without in-camera correction, which may or may not have included these two lenses (I'll have to check and update here later today).

I'm surprised that the two corrections aren't more complimentary, as usually it is seamless (as you can see with the 2/25mm). But yes, you could do an either/or arrangement.

Which one would you recommend for weddings for the group shots etc? Would the 18mm be distorted at the corners for such images?

Yes, there will be some stretching in the corners (true for almost every wide angle option). I usually leave room on the edges for cropping to avoid that (also for different print ratios you need to leave yourself some space).

hey Great video. Would it be wise to get a three focal lengths for my A7iii : Batis 18/40/85 ? Cover all my bases ? Plus I can crop In APS-C to cover even more ?

hi Dustin, i have the 85mm batis, about to purchase the 40mm batis and would like a wide angle to complete the set. 18mm or 25mm?? do a lot of video and photos so needed for both purposes. leaning towards the 18mm but will the f2.8 bother me that much in low light?

Typically wide angle lenses have less stress on the focus system (depth of field is bigger), so you should probably be alright.

Hello Dustin, a couple minutes ago I have come across a video of yours reviewing the Fotodiox Wonderpana which Ted Gore uses. I didn’t you reviewed it until now. I were debating between Lee or Nisi. I am planning to use the filters on the FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM by Sony. Are your thought the same as when you reviewed the Fotodiox product? I would like your advice about those three brands of filters. Thank you

Dustin, I own the Batis 25, shot with it for over a year. My copy of the lens is adequately sharp across the frame, takes “modern” looking pictures, but ultimately I found the presentation unsatisfying and stopped using it. Something about its presentation is a little to harsh, I guess is the best way to describe it. Maybe you could describe it as flat. Additionally, I have had trouble with the focus motor vibrating and failing to find focus in moist conditions.

If I try to fast focus to different objects for a few times, it starts to make very strange noise. I'm not sure if I should return it to seller? Thanks for the review. I am using both the 18 and 25 for Landscape only, so, I doubt I will notice anything, nor will anyone except pixel peepers. I'm not one of those and my software can correct what you are showing for the wall photos. It is highly rated nevertheless for landscape and celestial photography.

Do you find the 25 m m adequate for a focal length for landscapes? I'm debating between the two but I can only get one. I do a lot of low light photography and night photography so I'm thinking of leaning towards the 25 millimeter bc of the f2 vs 2.8.

Great review. Wow, Loxia 21 and Batis 25 are two masterpiece by edge to edge sharpness. Batis 18 is incredible in the centre already wide open. I'm wrong or the Batis 25 works better from f/2 to f/5.6? At f/8 it shows a deterioration in quality. I believe that Batis 25 has a magenta cast (cloud and tree in the centre of image at 10min.), while Batis 18 is too cold. Both lenses do not represent the usual classical Zeiss colors rendering, but they are leses with a more modern look of the image with great sharpness and incredible micro-contrast, but unfortunately more flat and not very three-dimensional rendering. I know the Zeiss distagon 21 ze, the old Distagon 28 f2.8 Contax, the old Planar 135 f2, and they are all lenses that offer an incredible depth of color and image airiness that give us a more threedimensional image.

I would agree that overall the Loxia series boasts better color than the Batis lenses (the 135 may be the exception).

I just bought the 18mm batis. If i had some doubts about my buy then they are over now.. I already had the 25 and it`s fantastic and what i was able to see that the 18 is on some points even better.

Yeah I know about how nice the FE is. If you look at Jason's pic side by side, the Batis has a better contrast but the FE is sharper. As per DXO the FE is the sharpest of all the 85mms and it's 5 and 3 points ahead of the Batis and GM. I've used a friend's FE and it's the sharpest lens I've ever used. But going for the Batis simply coz of the weathersealing and contrast. So I'm curious on how much sharper it really us.

Nah the colours just doesn't pop enough for me the FE. Of course, it's an easy fix in post, but sometimes you just don't have the time for that. But I use my gear in harsh conditions and the weathersealing was the deciding factor for me. :)

Whenever I hear someone say "don't be pixel peeper" I think to myself "man, glad I'm not that guy" until I find myself literally watching hours of highly informative and incredibly detailed reviews like this one Dustin. *sigh*

I think being somewhat obsessive in your shopping process allows you to be pleasantly surprised by real world results. I personally fill my kit with lenses that I consider to strike the right balance between sharpness and rendering (and price, to some extent, though I have more budget there than I used to because of my position).

Hi Dustin. I’m considering selling my Sony Zeiss 16-35mm f/4 to buy the Zeiss Batis 18 f/2.8. I’ve heard a lot of good things about the zoom, but my pictures are not sharp in the center, and the corners are horrible. I probably got a bad copy. I rarely get sharp pictures in the center, but it does happen sometimes. I take a lot of pictures of architecture and sometimes landscape. I don’t want the soft corners, just good center sharpness, curves and so on. The weight doesn’t matter to me, as I walk around with telephoto lenses as well. But I don’t mind the lighter lens, and the f/2.8 would be good for astro.

Steven's suggestion isn't bad, though we don't know yet how good that lens will be. The Batis is definitely a very strong lens, though with some shortcomings.

Dustin Abbott What are the shortcomings? Does it have corner to corner sharpness as the Batis 25mm? I want corner to corner sharpness, but the Batis 25mm isn’t wide enough. I prefer primes, but I just wanted to start with a zoom. Seems like I regret it. My Zeiss 16-35mm f/4 is soft from mid to corners at any aperture. I usually take pictures at f/11-f/13 with wide lenses. Even the center is just fine. Maybe it’s a bad copy. I think it’s inconsistent, as I got a few sharp pictures, but not very sharp. Even the sharpness of the Sony Zeiss 55mm f/1.8 didn’t blow my mind, and it is described to be sharper than the Otus, although it doesn’t have all the corrections and look. Considering saving up for the Otus at some point, but it’s too expensive for me for now. Actually, I found one for just $1927 (the Zeiss Otus 55mm), but I don’t have that on me right now. I found a Batis 18mm for just $982.

Dustin Abbott Yes, I have watched them. I’m a true fan of your way to review lenses. You see every point of detail that is worth to mention. I will go and watch them again, as it’s some time ago. You’ve shown the true “specialness” about the Zeiss lenses in this review, especially in that building. This inspired me to visit a castle nearby, but I’m not really accepting the soft corners that my current lens gives me. The Otus line is, for example, very expensive because of the way they constructed it, the special look, design, generally optics and handling of aberrations and so on. Not many lenses can handle all of these phenomenons at once. The Sony Zeiss 55mm f/1.8 is as sharp, but it doesn’t have the corrections, sharpness at all apertures, look and so on.

I feel disappointed by the sharpness at the frame edges from the Batis 18mm: not that it's bad once you've stopped down a bit, but I was expecting more. By the way, you write "4K" in the title, but I can not find any resolution option upward of 1080p.

I think others have felt the same about the edges. I can't tell you why you don't see a higher resolution option - the video is 4096x2160 resolution.

One of the few right down main street reviewers on youtube!! Mr Abbott I am looking at something to fill the gap I have below the batis 25, I am considering the batis 18 and the sony 12-24, any thoughts? I am just a casual amatuer shooting some motorcycle events and landscapes along with about 10,000 images of my much loved Border Collies lol ; )

Hmmm. I think I would probably go with the wider lens if it is optically sound (I haven't tested it). The two Batis lenses are fairly close in focal length, and the 12-24mm would give you more separation between focal lengths.

i am no one to advise anyone esp. on sony. Earlier i would've preferred 12-24/4G but right now i would stick with 25 Batis if i was a sony user. The 12-24 is plagued with bad distortion & flare & vignetting, i've heard from Jared Polin's mouth (his own experience).

How come Sony doesnt offer more lower apertures on their wide angle primes? I want to switch to Sony but F2.8 on an EXPENSIVE prime is hard to swallow.

Going to wider apertures in wide angle lenses often involved compromises like a bulbous front element or a lot bigger size. Sigma makes wide aperture, wide angle primes, but they are huge, heavy, and a poor fit on mirrorless.

I want to get one to use it on my gimbal, but it's such a tough choice. The one is f/2.0, so it's great for filming indoors, which I do a lot. But it's 25mm, and the one is 18mm, which is nicer than shooting inside, but it's at f2.8. So for darker areas, I'd have to turn up the iso. Oh and, here in the Netherlands, the 18mm is about €170 more expensive (€1370). A 18mm f/2.0 would be a great solution for this dilemma. ;p

It isn't an easy choice, because they both have their strengths.

I think it is very important to recognize that regardless of what these presets state, the bottom line is getting the look the photographer wants to see and not what another so called authority says........If you like to look at bushes and trees both these photos are very acceptable to me. I am not interested in paying for any lens that only focuses manually......
