In the seventies in Europe and the USA nothing came near to match the quality of this tv series , the acting and scripts , and production are first rate ´ and of course shintaro katsu did an incredible job playing this character ,

Not only were the production values extremely high for the times, but the writers were superb!

Totally engrossing! Shintaro Katsu is perfect as the blind swordsman. Thank you very much Samurai VS Ninja.

The more I watch the Zatoichi series, the storyline gets better and better.

Drinking sake.................... becomes more and more tasty.

This entire series has amazing casting. You can immediately see from the face who is the villain, who is the cunning one, who is the good one.

I love the low tech effects interspersed throughout this episode that merely suggested the presence of a supernatural entity. The effect created is more visceral as the viewer supplies their own subtext to the scene.

Ichi's katana fights itself , Ichi is just a keeper . They are to me like, a dancer and dancer's soul .

This series was my favorite when I was younger and it still is now that I'm an adult. I don't get tired of looking at it. A beautiful series and the minds of the actors are well-matched.

When Isazo confronts Ichi to tell him everything he hates about him, it was a parody of the entire series. That was funny, and it wound up being sad. Isazo would have made a good winger for Ichi.

27:11 I hate the way Ichi eats food in the film. Many times the playwright described Ichi as a hungry refugee who treated food carelessly and disrespected his food, but in fact, a refugee cherished and enjoyed his food very much because he might not have another good meal in the near future. In the old times, poor people had difficulty eating food. Most time they ate like pigs because pigs ate sweet potato root and leaves, and poor people did as well. Rice was not easy to come by through many processes and only rich people could afford to eat clean degermed rice. A poor would keep every grain of rice so as not to be wasted and when he ate, he would use something to save every grain of rice such as bamboo leaf, and would not eat as Ichi did in the film. He let the rice fall on the ground and then picked them up and ate like a dog. The playwright had never seen how poor people doing in their harsh lives. He wanted to express how Ichi cherished the rice, but he didn't know how the poor people treated the rice in their daily lives. Some poor people clean their bowls with their tongues to make sure every grain of rice does not go to waste.

In one of the previous episodes in which he travels with an old woman, they explain why he eats that way after the old woman scolds him for his vulgar way of eating. Then he tries to eat more politely but the old woman tells him that it is okay for him to eat however he wants.

You must know a swordsman plays his sword in a very precise way because it is a life matter and you can see all good swordsmen act absolutely in a moderate and calm way even during their meal time; therefore, the way of Ichi's eating habit contradicts his spirit of swordsmanship. In the old times, most people had difficulty eating fully every day. They might eat fast, but they would not waste a grain of rice.
