So different from the other episodes, the yakuza are not even mentioned. The directing of the shots, the music, the scenes were all very artistic. And the battle was incredible, Zatoichi had a hard time against this one. Not to mention the beautiful visual rhyme of the rope around Zatoichi's hand and the chords of the shamisen. That was ART.

Truly a compelling and visually stunning episode. It stands alone as unique. It’s much more poetic and reflective in the way the snowy countryside echos the sadness and isolation of the characters,

an individual who has been blind for some time activates quite different brain areas when listening to music compared to a sighted person. Blind individuals show greater amygdala activation in response to emotional auditory stimuli compared to sighted people. We know from the behavioural tasks this can sometimes, but not always, result in superior auditory skills. Sighted individuals can also experience greater amygdala activation to emotional music when their eyes are closed compared to when they are open

There is so much to say about this episode.I really wish I was fluent in Japanese because I know there must be several deeper layers going on in this story we just can't get through the translation, like in the note. Did Sawa agree to the pact or was it the son!?? I need to watch this one again and again, just from a visual perspective this was a gorgeous vision of music and brutality, it reminds me very much of a haiku- "this world of suffering- even if the flower opens, even if it opens..." I hope this director gets to work with this material again!!! He nailed it!

Many of the episodes before this has characters that have suffered, but this episode excels in showing sadness and pain and suffering. The acting and writing is among the best. The majority of people nowadays are too busy being rude and self-obsessed and addicted to technology to notice or even care about what tragic and horrible things others have to go through. This series and many Japanese movies shows the cruelty humans can subject upon each other in a way that is beyond more recent American productions.

I see the intersection and tale of two discriminated against subgroups in Edo Japan, the blind masseurs and the blind female musicians, for whom if fate dictates and they are seen as breaking rules they are ostracized and even killed in a ruthless, misogynistic society. Many Zatoichi films depict the prostitution endemic in Japan, where fathers sell their daughters to brothels, where pimps profit which consigns females to destruction or death. Mainstream Japanese films echoe this trope. The Zatoichi series was making critical statements of specific cruelties in Japanese society and thus depicting the universality of cruelty and inhumanity in all civilizations. The films bear a proclivity to become character studies as well as venture into grander philosophical treatments and studies in ethics.
