One reason he may have been against drugs is that his bandmates got into them and it fucked up his tours! Can you imagine finally getting a group together to play your own compositions and when you tour, they're off looking for coke/crack? It must have been so frustrating for him.

People talk about courage usually in relation to being able to "fight for your country"...but I think nothing takes more courage in this world than risking being your authentic self and sticking with what you believe despite the the barrage of misunderstandings and criticism. Zappa never deviated from that

Of course Frank did use one of the worst and most pointless "drugs" on the planet , aka cigarettes , and was extremely addicted to regular fixes of Nicotine.
Cigarettes are bad. We all know that, and either Frank chose to reject that reality or was ignorant to it altogether. That being said - there is a huge difference between a drug like tobacco and drugs like cocaine, heroin, pills, etc. It's obvious he's talking about the latter class of "hard drugs" when he says "I don't do drugs". I'm pretty most people agree with this, but would rather start an nitpick argument over someone being hypocritical rather than appreciate a once-in-a-century musician and genius.
