"Computer Love" is a seminal song by the funk band Zapp, released in 1985 on their album "Zapp IV." The track is notable for its innovative use of the talk box, a device that alters the sound of a musical instrument by shaping the frequency content of the sound and incorporating it into the lyrics. Zapp's use of the talk box, along with their distinctive funk sound, helped to define the electro-funk genre of the 1980s.
"Computer Love" is characterized by its funky bassline, synthesizer melodies, and the distinctive sound of the talk box. The song combines elements of funk, R&B, and electronic music, creating a unique and futuristic sound that was ahead of its time. Zapp's use of the talk box, made famous by artists like Roger Troutman, is a key feature of the song. The talk box gives the vocals a robotic quality, adding to the theme of technology and love.
The lyrics of "Computer Love" explore the theme of technology's impact on human relationships.
The song tells the story of a person who finds love through a computer, highlighting the increasing role of technology in modern romance. Despite the distance and anonymity of computer communication, the protagonist feels a deep connection with their digital love interest.
"Computer Love" was a commercial success, reaching number 8 on the Billboard R&B chart and number 79 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song's futuristic sound and themes resonated with audiences in the 1980s, reflecting the increasing prevalence of computers and technology in society. "Computer Love" has been sampled and referenced in numerous songs and has remained popular in hip-hop and R&B circles.
Zapp's "Computer Love" has endured as a classic of the electro-funk genre and continues to be celebrated for its innovative production and catchy melody. The song has been covered and remixed by various artists, further cementing its place in music history. Zapp's influence on contemporary R&B and hip-hop can be heard in the use of electronic instrumentation and vocal effects in modern music.
Overall, "Computer Love" is a groundbreaking song that exemplifies Zapp's unique blend of funk and electronic music. Its exploration of technology and romance remains relevant decades after its release, making it a timeless classic in the world of popular music.

Not a lot of people know that Roger Troutman taught DJ Quik how to use the talkbox and inspired him in some of the funk sounds Quik brings to his music.

Black screen and blue letters leaves a lot of room for the imagination. Never underestimate the power of a black screen or a white canvas. We're basically touching upon that zero point energy here. An unending resource. Ultimate potential. That "nothing" everything sprang from.

Like Kip's wedding poem at the end of *Napoleon Dynamite* Why do you love me? Why do you need me? Always and forever... We met in a chatroom, now our love can fully bloom... Sure the world wide web is great, but you, you make my salivate... *I love technology, but not as much as you* , you see... But I STILL love technology ... Always and forever. Our love is like a flock of doves, flying up to heaven above... always and forever, always and forever... Why do you need me? Why do you love me? Always and forever.

This is from my childhood. When Soul Train came on - cartoons were over on a Saturday morning.. great memories. I LOVE this song. He's right that there was no internet then - but to be fair Prince wrote a song called Computer Blue in 1984.. and there was a movie called Electric Dreams about a computer that falls in love with a girl- so it's not like this concept was alien at the time. The song couldn't have done that poorly because I knew it well and even though back then music could be more segregated by genre on the radio (Country, R&B, Pop, Rock) all on separate charts and radio stations - I still heard it so.. Great song - Zapp was a great band.

Zapp is my favorite R&B group , half the group is from here in Cincinnati, and of course the Troutman's are from Hamilton ( not Dayton ). Had the chance to meet Roger many times before he died. The difference between the talk box & Auto Tune is Auto Tune was made to cover up the fact that most who use it Can't Sing!. Damn near every G-Funk hit in the 90's had Roger on it or sampled a bit of Zapp.

Dayton's own Roger Troutman! Roger's music can be found as samples on some of the the biggest rap songs, including California Love. Roger was in an early group called Sun. If you're digging the Dayton Sound, check out groups like Slave, Ohio Players, Lakeside, Faze-O, and many more! My BF is from Dayton and knew all the guys in those groups.

He was shot by his brother and died in the alley behind his recording studio. His brother took off when he saw what he did and commited suicide and wrecked his car on purpose. Rumor has it that it was over a real estate deal.
