Zao is one of the realist bands I've ever come across. There is just something different about them. I have personally connected with so many of Dans lyrics. Zao's lyrics especially with blood and fire and liberate have huge influences on how I view and live as a Christian today.

One of my top ten bands ever. The first time I heard "Burn it down and walk away...burn it down" i was hooked. I dug deep. Honestly, the "newer stuff" didnt strike me immediately. But it grew. And grew. And still does, to this day. Its been too long, boys. 2023 needs some light.

Im grateful for what these guys did. I wasnt allowed to jam satanic or even remotely evil music as a kid 10-13. Solid state had my fix for angst driven, passionate, heavy music, until I got hooked on all things victory and revelation. Then I got introduced to metal blade, century media & roadrunner in 97. Damn, heavy music now, is totally influenced by zao. Listen to Pig Destroyer, vein, expire... Also Integrity being apart of the influence. man, good shit. I didnt care then that it was christian music and as an atheist, I dont care. its ground breaking music and guitar playing.

Jesse may be the reason for they being around for so long, but he is also their obvious demise....No one should've assumed those "other things coming into their lives" would pay like Zao did (as little money as it may have made at times). Zao shouldve been the only reason they did music. There are too many people like Josh Scoggins (norma jean) and Jesse smith who take their old bands' success for granted..they feel any new project will be better when it wont. Not realizing that is a weakness

and when i watch Norma vs the chariot or Zao vs jesse smith's solo band, its always soooo obvious the mistakes they made leaving those bands.,.sure, the chariot may be great live, but its not the same as original norma jean's lineup and not as intense as Bless the Martyr-era shows. Same w/ Zao...big time. You watch their Liberate-shows and its just plain obvious that not any of their side projects could ever be so intense. Its not about how hard they go off to me either, its the writing/material

I do agree that Jesse has more than earned his place in Zao's history & it absolutely would have died after Splinter shards if it wasn't for him. That said though, Given not only the issues the band went through after Liberate up through Parade of Chaos, Jesse really became a toxic element in that band, (not saying he was toxic as a person, just in relation with his place in the band). Zao flourished with Ferret & after replacing him. I can actually speak from experience on this. During the parade of Chaos tour, when they played at Real Soda here in Spokane, I had to spend half Zao's set in the bathroom making sure Jesse didn't choke on his own vomit because he was so fucked up while the drummer for Underoath was filling in. I think he just had specific ideas on what he wanted in the band & when he wasn't coming out how he wanted, I think on a subconscious level he wanted to self immolate. Doesn't mean he's a bad guy or anything. It just means that he & the band changed over time & became less compatible & weren't a good fir for each other anymore. Honestly, I kinda wonder what direction it would have taken had he left sooner.

@@xSlappykinkaidx mega underrated comment.. And 100% the truth. Jesse was obviously a phenomenal drummer and the reason why the “classic lineup” of Zao even came to fruition, but things change over time. People change over time… and by the turn of the century, it was becoming very clear that Jesse and the rest of the band were on two completely separate wavelengths and it was time for a completely new direction. Jesse Smith will always be one of my favorite drummers of all time, and even with that, I still feel that moving on without him was the right decision in every way.

When you take your band from a corner of hardcore that everyone hates and now is one of the ten bands that people define early metalcore and 90s hardcore even with secular people it may end up giving you a lot of confidence that may become a bit narcisstic

+Poppa Punker I mean it's a documentary of the history of the band and unfortunately a lot of that history is rooted in members coming and going and Jesse honestly being a little too full of himself. That's life. Don't be a choad.

If Zao kicked Jesse out of the band they would have actually lasted and had an impact for Christ and not sold out, instead of *insert new band members and replacement weirdos here.* This documentary is a great detailed explanation of how Christian ministry bands can become absolutely the opposite.

STOP MAKING HOMOSEXUAL COMMENTS ON HERE DWEEB!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway, if you guys go back to the sound of Save Yourself From Hell and the two albums after that then I and many many other Zao fans will be very very very grateful. Oh! And Dan, you need Jesus through the power of his Holy Spirit baaaad!!!!!!!!! Then you'll be going great places!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
