You know i hate the idea of blind following christians and religon period but Zao has rocked since i got my hands on "Songs from the penalty box" back in late 90s

Same, and honestly, back then they were some of the heaviest, most evil-sounding stuff I was listening to at the time.
"Even though it was my band, even though I never said it was my band, and anyone who ever put those words in my mouth can blow me"-Jesse Smith Good example of him as a person. He basically told himself to blow himself.
To this day- I still cry when I listen to the funeral of God. Thank you for impacting my life @zao
Still one of my favorite bands. Blood and Fire, and Liberate are amazing albums.

Zao is one of the realist bands I've ever come across. There is just something different about them. I have personally connected with so many of Dans lyrics. Zao's lyrics especially with blood and fire and liberate have huge influences on how I view and live as a Christian today.
One of my top ten bands ever. The first time I heard "Burn it down and walk away...burn it down" i was hooked. I dug deep. Honestly, the "newer stuff" didnt strike me immediately. But it grew. And grew. And still does, to this day. Its been too long, boys. 2023 needs some light.
Dan's the man. That's all I'm getting from this whole thing haha
Keep it up guys, thank you for everything
Wow...so all this time it was Jesse who was the reason my favorite band wasn't as big as I thought they should be.
Huge Zao fan! They are one of my favorite bands. Hope they plan on playing some shows soon.
1:07 in ... hearing yall bringing up the band i was in (PURITAN) is mindblowing ... we were best pals with jack, brad, jim etc PASSOVER, plus Ziggy, Paul and the abnegation boys .... this is awesome. There really was a pennsylvania core of bands that were all tight. All brought a different angle to a similar outcome. Cheers yall. Even though this is years late lol

Im grateful for what these guys did. I wasnt allowed to jam satanic or even remotely evil music as a kid 10-13. Solid state had my fix for angst driven, passionate, heavy music, until I got hooked on all things victory and revelation. Then I got introduced to metal blade, century media & roadrunner in 97. Damn, heavy music now, is totally influenced by zao. Listen to Pig Destroyer, vein, expire... Also Integrity being apart of the influence. man, good shit. I didnt care then that it was christian music and as an atheist, I dont care. its ground breaking music and guitar playing.

Love this DVD.
What Jesse says about 1:20:00 - 1:23:00 is amazing. "There's no promise that your like will be better, there's no promise that horrible things won't happen ... It's not 'believe in God' but 'God is the only reason I made it through the worst moments in my life' " Really cool, plain-spoken, honest testimony.

I enjoyed watching this documentary of the Great Enigma know as Zao. Being in a band is not always a walk in the park and this just gives outsiders of this experience a small taste of what bands actually have to go through.

No he isn't. He is the reason that Zao still lives! He was kind of a jerk but still... He was the only remaining member of the original Zao and invited more people to join and kept the band going.

Yes, they are currently working on another album.
I think a good many of them need to go about 15 rounds in a ring....see if they can work out some of those issues. They all whine a lot but it seems Jesse was a big problem most of the time. Least they make some good music! "Liberte Te Ex Inferis" is one of my all time favorite albums. Christian metal or not....either way that's one of the darkest sounding albums I've ever heard.

i watched this DVD in high school so many times. christian metalcore made no sense even when u were fully in it. Jesse is the missing link between POD and 'fashioncore', the history of Zao is like a rosetta stone in how this style came to be
@dr6316

good observation
Jesse may be the reason for they being around for so long, but he is also their obvious demise....No one should've assumed those "other things coming into their lives" would pay like Zao did (as little money as it may have made at times). Zao shouldve been the only reason they did music. There are too many people like Josh Scoggins (norma jean) and Jesse smith who take their old bands' success for granted..they feel any new project will be better when it wont. Not realizing that is a weakness

Did Shawn Koschik do the writing on drums for funeral of god? What happened to that guy?
and when i watch Norma vs the chariot or Zao vs jesse smith's solo band, its always soooo obvious the mistakes they made leaving those bands.,.sure, the chariot may be great live, but its not the same as original norma jean's lineup and not as intense as Bless the Martyr-era shows. Same w/ Zao...big time. You watch their Liberate-shows and its just plain obvious that not any of their side projects could ever be so intense. Its not about how hard they go off to me either, its the writing/material

It was always rumored that Josh left the NJ because they wanted to start adding more clean vocals. You can hear more sung choruses too from O God onwards. So I think NJ was already gearing up to be less wild, not that it was a result of Josh leaving.
is that passover video available to watch anywhere
Dude I love the V drums on ST :'[
Anyone know if Eric is still a pastor and where his church is?
what possible difference could that make?
The playing with Living Sacrifice must have been the moment when they were like "Dude, we're not as good as we thought." Because LIVING SACRIFICE ARE THE KINGS OF METAL!!
By all accounts, it sounds like there almost wasn't one, multiple times, BECAUSE of him.
i wanna watch this but why the fuck is it over 3 hours. i dont wanna dedicate my whole night to this thing

I do agree that Jesse has more than earned his place in Zao's history & it absolutely would have died after Splinter shards if it wasn't for him. That said though, Given not only the issues the band went through after Liberate up through Parade of Chaos, Jesse really became a toxic element in that band, (not saying he was toxic as a person, just in relation with his place in the band). Zao flourished with Ferret & after replacing him. I can actually speak from experience on this. During the parade of Chaos tour, when they played at Real Soda here in Spokane, I had to spend half Zao's set in the bathroom making sure Jesse didn't choke on his own vomit because he was so fucked up while the drummer for Underoath was filling in. I think he just had specific ideas on what he wanted in the band & when he wasn't coming out how he wanted, I think on a subconscious level he wanted to self immolate. Doesn't mean he's a bad guy or anything. It just means that he & the band changed over time & became less compatible & weren't a good fir for each other anymore. Honestly, I kinda wonder what direction it would have taken had he left sooner.

@@xSlappykinkaidx mega underrated comment.. And 100% the truth. Jesse was obviously a phenomenal drummer and the reason why the “classic lineup” of Zao even came to fruition, but things change over time. People change over time… and by the turn of the century, it was becoming very clear that Jesse and the rest of the band were on two completely separate wavelengths and it was time for a completely new direction. Jesse Smith will always be one of my favorite drummers of all time, and even with that, I still feel that moving on without him was the right decision in every way.
For some reason Jesse reminds of a south park character. Still trying to figure out who, but its there...
