Zahhak the Demon King - Persian Myth #1 - Extra Mythology

Watch Extra Mythology ad-free on Nebula! go.nebula.tv/extramythology
Zahhak was not always a demon king--but, deceived by a young man named Iblis, he was motivated to slay his father to obtain world power. His pride would cause him to turn into a monstrous demon king, with serpents on his shoulders that fed on the Arabian people, for a thousand years... until Feraydun showed up...

As someone who was raised by these stories, I'm so delighted to see they are being told in English! I wanted to add two pieces of the story that were dropped in the video might cause confusion: 1. Zahhak was the son of a local Arab ruler who overthrew Jam, the king of Persia. That's why the video might seem confusing as to where the story happened. 2. The snakes fed on human brain once they grew fully. The physician told Zahhak that there is no use cutting them off as they'll just grow back. Instead, he should feed them with young mens' brains everyday to keep them from entering his ears and eating his own brain!

@@Lakhshamana No, that's the etymology of Satan. Iblis is the Islamic equivalent for Satan but the etymology and exact character is different. From Wiki: "The term Iblis (Arabic: إِبْلِيس) may have been derived from the Arabic verbal root BLS ب-ل-س (with the broad meaning of "remain in grief")[6] or بَلَسَ (balasa, "he despaired").[7] Furthermore, the name is related to talbis meaning confusion." Iblis was a djinn/jinn/genie, not an angel as such in most stories. The Islamic term "Shayṭān " on the other hand is directly related to the Hebrew Šāṭān meaning accuser or adversary.

  • @GaldirEonai

The root of the confusion is that the Fallen Angel and Satan figures in abrahamic myth were originally separate. Proto-satan was a member of god's court who had the task of tempting and testing mortals. Proto-lucifer was a prideful rebel against god's rule. Over time, the two got more and more mixed together into a singular devil-figure.

The part where Zahhak out of jealousy tried to kill the consort reminds me of a murder that happened in Sanlitun Beijing a few years ago: a man murdered a young woman who he never met before in cold blood, she was just walking with her French fiancé then, who was devastated by the murder. When questioned about his motive the murderer said something along the lines of "these foreigners are stealing our women from us, I hate them!" He did not lash out against the one he actually hates but the woman he's with. They did not confront the suitor directly but murders the person they think they "own"(so don't expect them to confront/ask for the opinion of the person of desire for that matter). Evil people are similar I guess.

the angel said not to kill Zahhak because by tearing his body open all the harmful vermin that were living within his foul body would break free and devastate the world of men, so he had to be only put away in the deepest bowels of the sacred cave under the mount Ghaf and be forgotten forever ( pretty much a peak that doesn't exist and can't be found as anything that is vanished forever from our life has gone behind that peak to never return)... actually to think about it, we still suffer a pretty acute case of King Zahhak the snake bearer still infesting this land of Persia, the picture matches the descriptions of the stories of old to terrifying length in accuracy... so, yea, score one for the ancestors and their infinite wisdom...

Unfortunately he has a major inaccuracy in his summarization of the story. And that’s the fact that Zahak was a minor king in the arab lands and he managed to overthrow the kings of kings of the Persian Empire (Jamshid). I don’t know why he said Zahak did that to his father?! Might be because he doesn’t want to talk about the very fact that the story is a little bit racist towards Arabs and wants to protect the Iranian identity and it’s awareness against the Arab exposure and danger.

  • @hamidrezaamini8626

He didn't say the whole myth. Before Zahhak, there was a king whose name was Jamshid or Jam. Jamshid was mighty and good at the beginning. He was the king of the whole world according to mythology, and he destroyed the demons. But after ruling over people for a long time, he became arrogant and called himself God. He claimed that he was God and created everything. This motivated Iranian and Persian generals to leave Jamshid and join Zahhak because they thought Zahhak was good like his father, Merdas. Finally, Zahhak became the king of kings and killed Jamshid. The rest of the myth is almost the same as what this video said.

Sure sounded like he was genuinely trying to be a good king and cure the curse that'd miss-shaped him, but by the time he had good advisors his PR was so utterly shot from said 'cure' that nobody trusted him. Heck, even the demon thing...I mean Salomon did something that, and got praised for it.

It seems to be a universal fate for bad kings (my brother's personal favourite gets chained to an immortal wolf under a mountain)… They're all supposed to return at the end of the world so. Maybe surviving the end of the world would be easier if we stopped hiding incredibly powerful monsters in places they could easily return from?

Shame on me for not watching this earlier, as it's one of my favorite myths (though there were a few bits they missed, such as the reason Zahhak was imprisoned was due to him "bleeding" vermin, and killing him would cause vermin to overrun the world). For years I've made variations of Zahhak/Azi Dahaka in games, notably _Dynasty Warriors 5/6: Empires_ with the "demon armor" that featured dragon head-shaped pauldrons (reflecting the "three-headed dragon" myth of Azi Dahaka) and _SoulCalibur V_ using the "snake horn" accessory to create the pair of snakes growing from his shoulders (using bullet-wound scar stickers in case they were destroyed in battle).

Loki killed Bauldur and the gods lashed him to a mountain, killed one of Loki's kids, and used his intestines for the rope loki was bound with. Prometheus was bound to a mountain with adamantine chains for stealing fire to give to man so they may one day overthrow the gods and their tyranny (the Greek pantheon was a lot of assholes). Only not to mention, only prometheus knew which of Zeus' sons would overthrow HIM just as he had done to Kronos, and as Kronos had done to Ouranos. Prometheus refused to tell, if he had, the tyranny of the gods would never have ended. So, Zeus set a great eagle upon Prometheus, that each day, would devour his liver, and prometheus would heal overnight, unable to die.

well yes and no for 2 and 3 . the story is older than islam is. it's zoroastrian. soo... well all depends on what version you follow. kind of the same with the whole arc of noah/epic of gilgamesh/ziusudra kind of deal. all depends if you are religious or not.

The smith is named Kaveh. Not sure why that detail wasn't included. Also, Zhahak was imprisoned in the mountain of Damvand, a real mountain in Iran.
