Zagreb to Osijek 2024: Bus, Plane and Train

Zagreb to Osijek by public transport, a foreign appreciation. Here is my experience by bus, train and plane, and if you are curious to find out how much you, the taxpayer, have been subsidising 6 flights from Zagreb to Osijek each week that almost nobody uses, watch on. Constructive suggestion - could we swap for 3 flights a week from Osijek to Split, perhaps?

Bck in the day when the Serbs controlled Okucani, that trip was a nightmare...LOL. It took me like 15hrs by train to get to Slavonski Brod. The upside was we would ride in the baggage car with the conductor staff and sling hammocks on the cage and ride with the doors open.

Thank you for pointing out the absurdly awful Zagreb bus station.

Paul what do you make of Slavonski Brod bus station new terminal that was opened only recently some 2 years ago? It's architecture is done by quite renowned Zagreb project studio and hailed in professional circles as one of the most beautiful and practical ones in all Croatia. And it is also quite spacious for the city of some 50.000 citizens although it serves also many nearby smaller communities. It is also very contemporary, very clean with neat toilets, café, newstand... Ps. One less known fact: Slavonski Brod bus station is the third busiest in all Croatia according to the official statistics.

@@PaulBradbury Yes, that's actually fairly good comparison in which Osijek is by far the best one, our smaller station in Brod probably second best while Zagreb bus station, regardless of it's size and importance, is one of the worst and Split is very near to this if not worse. But Paul have you been to Rijeka bus station Zabica? Well that's hilarious! But they've atleast decided in Rijeka to act and to build completely new one, projected as ultramodern, large and attractive complex with numerous additional stuff going on it. This amazing project was presented some month or two ago and I'm sure it can be found somewhere on Internet. It is sad that Zagreb isn't one that is planning to do anything with this ugly, very unpractical building that doesn't meet several modern standards esp. those regarding accessibility for disabled people. Kind regards and do visit Slavonski Brod too for more than 15 minutes. Trust me, we have a bit more than modern bus station. 😉

Very nice review :) ... I haven't used public transport from Osijek to Zagreb since winter 2020. But I did take the summer season train from Osijek to Šibenik (Split). I also used the TradeAir route from Osijek to Split and I found it to be much more then just a plane trip, more like a scenic ride across Croatia and the price was about the same as the bus on the same route. And I think the same, it is a waste of money to subsidize the plane on route Osijek-Zagreb as it is too short so a bus or a train are much better choices for that trip. If we need to subsidize an airline then it would be better to have more departures towards the Adriatic coast, like Pula, Split and Dubrovnik and to add Rijeka and Zadar also. Zagreb could only maybe become one of the stops on the TradeAir airline route towards Dubrovnik. But if you count in the time spent on the way to and on airports, from Osijek to Zagreb the airplane is not much faster then the bus.

I think the Trade Air flights are great apart from the Zag - Osi which makes no sense. I flew Dubvonik, SPlit, Rijeka, Osijek - 3.5 hours and a wonderful sightseeing opportunity. It was 60 euro i think, 2 years ago

I'm surprised not to hear any comment about the road surface on the highway; perhaps the coach absorbs the pot holes a lot better than a car. In contrast to the rest of the highway, Zagreb to Lipovac is particularly terrible in lane 1 in places. It's usually quiet enough that you can drive in lane 2 and pull across if someone needs to pass. I've been driving it frequently for 3 years and the only thing they've done to "improve" it is reduce the limit to 100 😂.

I guess I lived on a Dalmatian island too long, as I have never noticed any issues on the highway.
