Before the beginning of this past season and wings fans were asked if they’d be happy with the opportunity to be in the playoffs in the final week of the regular season, they take it. This season’s team got 91 points, 11 more points than last.

Goaltending is about number 5 on the list of reasons they didn’t make the playoffs. They don’t have an elite goalie but the ones they used did a great job of keeping them in almost all the games. IMO

Totally agree. A goalie's job is to keep his team in a position to win. Our goalies did that this year. A large share of losses came from skaters giving up on games when falling back, despite us coming back 13 times. Once that mentailty of giving up is fully disposed of, we'll see a big change in results.

I'm 52 I remember how bad the wings were before Yzerman and how when the wings got better but got bounced the first round each year and the "fans" in brackets because they aren't and weren't really fans and the talking heads questioned Stevie Ys heart and abilities. Stevie by the time the team won the Stanley Cups was playing on knees most of us would be whining and crying about daily, by the time 2001/2002 playoffs Yzerman had NO knees and he was the Heart and soul of the wings and he still is today, why did the wings win in 08 ? Pav and Hank never won scoring championships, who did we have? We had all the players that watched and learned from Yzerman how to check an ego and how the team was first and you came 2nd, then he goes into management and brings Canada 2 Gold medals at the Olympics and gold in other Canadian tournaments, He builds Tampa into a perennial playoff team with Championships, he had 9yrs in Tampa and the fans in Tampa were heartbroken when he left and he comes full circle and he is building a dynasty team for you "fans" but your a generation of Amazon door deliveries and shopping on your phone and tablet and majority of you have never paid for a ticket to a wings game but you have all the complaints 🤔 Sit down shut up and watch, until the team regresses in some Major way you have no business complaining, the team has got better by leaps and bounds compared to where they were when Stevie took over. Where was all this bullshit when Holland ran the team into the ground grifting playoff money with NO chance of winning? Where was this anger when Holland signed so many long term bad contracts? Helm, Cleary? Abdalkader? If I'm not mistaken this is the first year Yzerman didn't have to buy out a bad contract.

Yzerman forgot more about hockey since I started typing this comment than 99% of the fans ever knew. Holland F**ked this team the last 5 years he was here. Holland success was no cap era and Mr I blanks checks. Yzerman is the greatest Captain in NHL history. They DON'T come back against Vancouver in 2002 without the Captain. Yzerman is going NO WHERE unless by choice. D Mac said it best, Yzerman wants to build a team with long term success, not one or two years. It might be 4 or 5 more seasons before they are a legit Cup contender, but when it happens, they will be in the conversations for 5 or 6 years. He built the Lightning team that won the Cup.

Thank you! I've been saying the same thing. I think your probably around my age. So you witnessed what the man could do. His competitiveness is off the charts. Also, in 02, he played on 1 leg and still lead the team in points in the playoffs. I think its the younger fans you are impatient. I understand their disappointment. But i urge them not to blame yzerman. He will do whatever it takes to win. We barely missed the playoffs this year and we had alot of key injuries. Yes, Holland screwed this team up. I'll always be pissed that he bought the hype about Zadina. I wanted hughs so bad. We desperately needed defensemen at that time and Hughs was right there. But he bought the Canadian hype.

I'm not trying to piss on your parade or anything, but what you are asking for is literally not possible. No team in the modern NHL is going to be able to challenge for cups for 25 years in a row. This expectation is as unrealistic as the fans who are on Yzerman's ass asking for cups now. What IS possible, is that we'll have a window to challenge for multiple cups if we're lucky. We will have the opportunity to challenge for cups in that window, not a god given right to win them. Look at Tampa. *They had a window of about 3-5 years to be a serious contender.* This window took 10 years to build and open. When that window opened they won 2 cups. They had the opportunity to win more during that time, but you cant win em all, and 2 back to back cups is not bad going as it is. *They now require a rebuild.* This is the best you can hope for in the salary cap era NHL. I for one would be happy with that. But what you are asking for is unrealistic. You're asking for a 26 year window (sorry, but lol). This is not happening in a salary capped NHL. It was only possible in the pre-cap era, and even then, only because Mr I had very deep pockets with a willingness to use his resources at will. I'm all for shouting down spineless fans who are calling for Yzerman's head, but there's no point rushing to the other extreme and developing unrealistic expectations for the longer term.

Yzerman did do a lot in terms of the roster Adding Debrincat and Kane were big moves. Sprong, Compher were nice pieces. Also having the three goalies was pivotal for them to have the run they did. Look I'm disappointed and frustrated like everyone else but when you take a step back they did make some big improvements this year. The team is much better offensively and if Edvinsson comes up sooner (was injured) they def get in. I'd like to see a different coach but I doubt it happens as I think Lalonde will get a third year. The wings should take that big step next year to not only being in the playoffs but winning a round or two if Yzerman can get another center and D man the roster will look good. They also need to keep Kane. That is key. I'd bring back Reimer as a backup but I think he will go with Husso and Lyon. I don't see Yzerman spending big $ on a goalie.

Fans are rightfully upset that after 5 years this team didn't make the playoffs. The "goalposts" moved from the start of the year to the end because (at times) the team played very well. After they got Kane, and then went on that winning streak in February, they looked like a dangerous playoff team. Stevie Y (along with the owner, other front office staff, and the coaches) decided to let the team sink or swim as it was (publicly stating that he felt they were good enough to make the playoffs as is,) but I feel it was to see how things played out. Why "rent" a player or 2 for a playoff push when if you kept the team As Is you'd better be able to see what, if anything, was truly needed? If they made the playoffs and however far they went, then great they'd assess after knowing what their strengths and weaknesses were. If they failed to make the playoffs, then they'd really have a crystal clear picture of their strengths and weaknesses. I understand why some may be upset, and some may be questioning Stevie Y, and I'm not just some Stevie Y slappy. I think they SHOULD have been in the playoffs and much improved by now as other teams "turned it around" within 5 years. But, other than them missing the playoffs again, I have liked almost everything they have done. Sure, I'd have loved it if they could've picked up a couple players to get them over the hump and into the playoffs, but what I REALLY want is a team built to win for decades. I think they are more than 1 or 2 pieces away (and that also is a criticism of Stevie Y) but if they can get the players to fill their holes in the off season that they feel can add to the team AND be around for more than just a playoff run...then that would put them into a much better place. Not contradictory because the circumstances would be different, but if they do that are easily playoff bound by next FA Deadline, maybe it would then make sense to pickup 1 or 2 guys for the playoff run if necessary. Hopefully their needs will be met this off season though so any FA deadlines moves would be either unnecessary or extra candy sprinkles atop their playoff team built sundae.

I watched them lose and build into a playoff team and eventually a perennial cup contender it took 10 yrs and they did that thru drafts getting the core foundation of the team Federov kozlov zettergerg datsyuk Lindstrom osgood Konstantinov DMac and other draft picks I am can’t name them all off hand. They build the cup team thru their picks and added once they had the core set. This is what yzerman is doing. I do not get why everyone is on his ass. He knows how this process works and he is doing exactly that. He knows exactly what he’s doing and giving up their future in prospects to get a player just to lose in the first round kills the teams future. It’s plain as day if you look at it realistically. Yzerman is doing what he was hired to do. This team over achieved this season in my opinion to get to final game and win but not get in sucks but to even get to that point is a success and progress. I’m ready to see if they make the next step next yr get into the playoffs. I expect them to lose the round but it’s forward progress. So good job wings yzerman. Not going to lie, I was sad at the circumstances that our boys didn't make the playoffs, especially after how hard they pushed, and the excitement of those last games, Ghost's "6 ft vertical" was pretty epic, Raymond's push, etc. Our team is capable, I think they proved that. Then, after that Panther game and Larkin out for ages, the Wings went on a backwards roll nearly outside the last wildcard spot and eventually invited the Caps, Isles, and Pens to put them out of contention. Wings were so close and couldn't manage even to win one more game during that stretch. This could be attributed to the Wings organization as a whole, but you have to point to head coaching as the responsible party here. As close as the Wings were at the end of the season, Lalonde was making statements that just didn't sit well with many Wings fans, statements mirroring that of a defeatist. Didn't make any sense. Doesn't matter what the odds were at the beginning of the season on whether or not the Wings chances weren't good, they were smack in it right to the end. As a hockey club, you can't let one person out with an injury (Larkin) determine your hopes for a playoff birth. Too many excuses from pundits on protecting or shielding the Wings from any responsibility from not having made the playoffs. What were the predictions for Boston at the beginning of the season? Weren't they also a club destined for a rebuild as well? Bottom line is the Wings were that close, and gave it to the Caps and the Isles the chance to get into the post season, also obvious from some help by the Flyers. Just think, the Caps got in with the tie breaker results they had versus the Wings. If the Wings had one more point than the Caps, they would have been in the playoffs, and the Caps would've been watching from home. Excuses by pundits when the Wings were THAT CLOSE jist doesn't cut it for me. On his show/podcast, Mike Valenti was right. You guys (Neil and D Mac) are wrong (not because of Stevie Y, as Stevie Y relied on the results of the team's success at the trade deadline, but because the Wings were so, so close. Lalonde SHOULD have made it his top priority to get the Wings to the playoffs. He did not.)

They get shellacked here for a couple of years and then they are burned out trying to stand on their heads to cover up for the shockingly bad defense we've had for years. I believe improvements will come in time so I'm not too worried. Yzerman isn't dumb, he see's what other people see and he wont stand for it indefinitely. I believe this issue will fix itself when we're not overly relying on rent-a-vets and when Steve's draftee's make up the core.

Detroit has done great things this season than they have, but again Lalonde is a Tampa Ingredient that doesn't work, all I can say is we draft good this year, there's a great pool of draft picks, Ryder Ritchie, Henry Mews, Sam Dickinson, Macklin Celebrini, Tij Iginla the list goes on, and yes we are stuck with Lyon and Husso next season, there is no way Cossa is NHL ready. Kane will probably go back to Hawks, i'll be shocked if he sticks in Detroit. There is some bandages we need on this team in free agency, and we shall see. The team has improved every year since he's been here. Do you think you could've done a better job? Fact is it took him 2yrs to get rid of Hollands mess. We were in salary cap hell. We had an empty prospect pool. Yzerman bleeds Red and White. He played his entire career here. He played on one leg to win the cup in 01/02. He will do everything in his power to make this team a contender. It will just take a little time. We damn near made the playoffs this year. We finished above Buffalo and Ottawa. The two teams that everyone said were better than us. Our blue chip prospects are not ready yet. We didn't have the luxury to get 1st, 2nd and 3rd overall picks. Or a couple 1st overall picks like NJ, NYR, Buffalo. Instead we get picks 6th and up. We got Raymond at 4th overall, when we were the WORST team in the league. So we have to build our teams a little differently. Also Yzerman is using Scotty Bowman philosophy. He goes after two way forwards and defenseman. If Holland would've drafted Hughs instead of Zadina. We would be a much different team. Holland bought the Canadian hype. Zadina was great in Canadian juniors and Canadian scouts and pundits look down on American college hockey. I was so disappointed when we picked Zadina. We desperately needed defensemen. Which is why in Yzermans first draft he selected Seider. All the "experts" said it was a horrible pick. Just give yzerman time. He knows how to win. I'm 38yrs old. I watched how competitive that man is. He hates losing
