This guy... Mr. Harari doesn't receive as much attention as I think he deserves, not only for the remarkable work he has done with his books but also for the profound importance of his message.

Agreed. He writes crystalline prose, so clear it seems to flow like water. And the scope of his mind encompasses more than any historian-anthropologist I've ever read. He reminds me of the late great Loren Eiseley.

Totally agree. When I read him forts time, three years ago, I had a glimpse, a feeling of it was something huge I was intellectually dealing with... And just now, after watching this interview, I thought something I had thought shyly a couple of times: we are facing a person who has in him all the qualities inherent to a leader, I mean, a real leader.

Absolutely engaging hour and 18 minutes!!! He has so much to talk about and not enough time. His first book Sapiens ( read it and now re-reading) is a MUST read for every human and it should be mandatory in every school around the world. love the ending of this talk as he says that we need to know us by learning to separate fiction from reality. That would really end majority of this world's problem. Hope to read all of his books soon

It seems we are looking at technologys effect on human behaviour. Not just fake news, isolation on social media bubbles, games etc, but the direct effect of technology itself. Stress, the tendency to feel you need to keep up. Anger, the tendency to be provocated or hurt by others. Insecurity and fear, the tendency to feel development makes you lag behind. So, technology seems to create feelings and from this behaviour. Just like architecture, culture, nature, also technology in itself changes behaviour. We need to know more about this and to find out how to balance the growing stress, anger, insecurity and fear. Drugs? Awareness? Yoga? Philosophy? We need to balance effects of technologu.

I am presently a technology designer; and prior to that I have been doing research on Oral Cells Regeneration-Artificial Tooth Growth; Re-Growth for many years. Therefore I have been faced with Ethical as well as Philosophical questions throughout both research and studies; AI, Mixed Realities-Holographic-Algorithms and Regenerative Medicine. I have been constantly going into my Kabbalah's Doctrine and deep spiritual believes in multiple occasions in order to either figure out how to proceed in a practice; experiment; or study; it turns out it goes hand to hand together weather you create nature or artificial. So, I completely agree with you that Ethics; Philosophy; and Spiritual Wisdom are components of any Creation or Re-Creation intended to serve.

So glad to have run across this guy! Nobody ever listens to me. Commercial markets emphasize the raw novelty of : "Alexa, order some batteries," or how GPS instructs one to "Turn Right," and the countless apps that manage your 'important life.' Clearly it's diabolical to rely on ones device to manage oneself. Our next generation is unaware of street names, how to start a vehicle engine manually, or where the fuse box is located (what's a fuse box?). I encourage the phone-rubbing individuals to challenge their resourcefulness by taking a day to acquire information and communicate utilizing alternative methods; absent the use of devices or search engines. Your apps exist not to help you but to report on your profiles and behaviors to the Internet marketing firms. Don't let them lessen your independent thinking skills and decision-making abilities. (pls. forgive the tone; I don't maintain a high Internet approval rating).

Mr. Yuval is a historian not mythologist and therefore is not sufficiently qualified to write about human evolution. In mob opinion, the publicity he has received is not deserved. As a matter of fact, the most exciting human evolution and is best covered years ago by mythologist George Campbell In the Power of Myth, Hero with 1000 faces, Heros Journey, and others in association with Bill Moyers. Mr. Yuval contradicts himself in his ideas such it is the social qualities rather than physical power of humans that led to its evolution. Nothing can be further from the truth. The myth in conjunction with physical abilities led to human evolution. There had be a belief system of some sort to create and function as a community. However, humanity survived by both. It is not either or, it is both. Humans owe their evolution to the longer thumb that enabled them to make precision tools unlike apes or chimps. Humans precision tool making ability and thereby creativity led to human evolution. Had human thumb remained shorter like the apes, there would bee no intelligent life on earth. It seems Mr. Yaval is not aware of George Campbell and his work.

The paradox: If to avoid disaster, humanity has to address (to design) how AI will emerge globally in the 21st century, it will first require a wholesale transformation of human consciousness to reach that consensus. Without this, the new AI reality will be designed and controlled by the tribalistic autocrats of today, particularly the networked global-corporate elites and their minions. It will be impossible to have a good outcome if the results are driven by short-term profits, political expediencies, or the random willful acts of a few narcissistic individuals. It seems to me that there is no way out of this trap. Sanguine proclamations cannot address the paradox that highly flawed human political leaders, businessmen and technocrats cannot produce anything other than a highly flawed AI future. Professor Harari is right to raise concerns about animal abuse in industrialized agriculture. I would like to see the same concern for the human outcasts of this new world order. He flirts with the ethical questions toward the end of the discussion. Nevertheless, the whole obsession with AI has more than a whiff of nihilism about it.

Yes, Poland is all those things, as are Hungary, Chechnya, Georgia, Uzbekistan, the Philippines... All depends on what 'doing better than everybody else at every level' means to you. Don't know your situation, but most people who look longingly at authoritarian, well-ordered societies as ideals are citizens of liberal democracies who have never known oppression.

As a Pole born in the US, Poland is a shithole culturally. High degrees of pathology due to generational complex trauma resulting from communism, very low intellectual progress, generally close minded, self absorbed/identity absorbed(Nationalism works wonders), superstitious, I can go on.... Poland isn't quite Saudi Arabia, but it's still a stain on Europe as far as I'm concerned. But then again, I am someone who speaks Polish, interacts with Poles for decades, yet does not "identify" as strictly Polish, which means I am not drinking the Polish koolaid which dooms most Poles to cult-like identity absorption.
