Yuval Noah Harari - Are Humans Superior to Other Life forms?

Award-winning author of the best-seller, Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, Yuval Noah Harari sits down with Professor Shahidha Bari to discuss the themes of his new book, Unstoppable Us Volume 1, aimed at a younger audience.
Harari's latest book is aimed at children so it’s on the smaller side, but it's still full of big ideas. In this conversation, he discusses what the future of humankind could look like and how the all-powerful influence of technology will be decisive in shaping it. He also explores why the Covid-19 pandemic has not led to a major cultural or political reset and discusses how Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has interrupted the established international order. Running through it all is the idea that humans can still take charge of their own destinies.

@@sylezjusz your accusation that I am a communist is neo macarthyism, a tactic commonly use for individuals with no argument to stand on. It’s also funny because the only people to ever call me comrade were fellow Marines and trust, it had nothing to do with communism. You completely misread his argument. He is advocating for using existing technologies to hold those in power to account. The technology is not going to way. It makes perfect senses to adapt it to be used in more humane ways. Perpetuating the surveillance state is definitely a move towards totalitarianism but, that is not what he is advocating. I would read Sapiens if you think what you wrote is true.

I appreciate his idealism here and without idealism we’d get nowhere, but I hope that he’s imagined some mechanism to decentralise/democratise that power, else it would contradict the stipulated intent of the tracking system (to “keep tabs” of the government- to balance power between the people and governors).

Yuval forgets the Noahide law (Jewish law which precedes Torah and is for all humankind to observe) against eating an animal alive or increasing an animal’s suffering. He also forgets Torah & Talmud law protecting animals (eg, giving them a Sabbath, feeding them before feeding yourself, intervening when someone abuses his beast of burden, etc.) as well as law protecting the land. Torah does not say we can do whatever we like with or to animals and saying we have “dominion” means that we are to care for them.

Deepfake technology is already being used, a couple of years and Yuval himself will be surprised at what information is being disseminated on his behalf, and worse, he will not be able to prove that he is him.

I listened to this interview from the gentleman and I conclude that he is very intelligent and educated and that he firmly believes in what he says. When a person is educated and studies, he rarely questions who the author of his textbooks is, what their agenda is and what their background is,etc. This is part of human naivety, because of which people, even educated ones like this gentleman, never ask real and really important questions about the origin of their knowledge and the beliefs they represent. It is simply part of human nature. From the presentation of this gentleman, I can conclude that despite his high education and intelligence, he knows very little or almost nothing about the nature of man and animals on this planet and about their role in this world. There are many reasons for this. One of the main reasons is that real knowledge about human nature and the meaning of his life, and I include animals in that, has never been publicly and massively taught and taught to the public in history. This is because such knowledge is so valuable. for the survival of this planet and the human species in its physical and spiritual dimension, that it should never happen that it is lost or falls into the wrong hands. One of the great teachers of humanity said - don't throw pearls before swine - it sounds harsh but it was necessary express yourself at that moment. Knowledge about the multidimensional nature of humans, animals and the planet we live on is the most precious thing that the human race possesses, and that is why this knowledge has been carefully handed down and preserved for millennia. If this knowledge were lost or fell into the wrong hands, it would be the physical and spiritual aspect of man and his mission on this planet are threatened. Man is not a one-dimensional animal that can be hacked, they are not even animals, and I think that this young gentleman is sincere and convinced in what he says, but I must state that his knowledge is equal to knowledge of a child.

33:10 Wrong: a SW development cycle starts with interviewing loan experts, then a "biz use cases" algorithm presented in a digestible for those experts form for approval. and only then computer code is generated (by URL) or written by an entry-level programmer. Good SW can print out criteria with the degree of meeting them and, Yuval, it's not "thousands points" of your layperson's imagination, but about ten. I respect you for not being a sloppy journalist, don't disappoint me, please. Take away point is: machine learning algorithms can develop algorithms but not for bank policies' use cases.

Why so much suffering? It's because humans walked away from God that Harari claims doesn't exist... and sadly can't see that the more we walk away from God the worse things get. The most amazing thing is that the mythological book (Christian Bible) has everything written and describes our days word by word and Harari is one of those we have been warned about... Harari is a living prove that the Bible is true.

I very much appreciate Yuval for his book and plan to get it for my kids. That being said, there has been a movement is public schools and with some parents to turn kids into activists and from this interview it seems this book embraces the view of the child activist. Child activists are dangerous because they often see the world in absolutes, good vs bad. Generally speaking, kids have difficulty weighing and predicting outcomes (eg. the young Germans who shut down the countries nuclear reactors). The question should be how do we teach kids about agency without turning them into activists.

Where are the scribes? Where are the wise men of this world? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since the world through its wisdom did not know God in his wisdom, it pleased God well through the folly of the preaching to save those who believe. No things have not been the same and they are going to become very scary in the very near future. History is about the past and we can learn from what people did that were good and what was done that caused harm. History is not imaginary" and is not just a "make believe story". It is a record of what actually happened. Harai does not understand the very real spiritual dimension of mankind, the spirit and soul. He is blind about many important realities. His ideas are cold-blooded and dangerous, like an inhuman "animal". He chooses to have the character of a "beast".

Yuval was right. COVID was a consequence of political pandemics. If it weren't for politics, we would have had systems and people in place to ensure early identification, prevention, and containment. Politics created an environment of neglect, supression, denial, and incompetence, leading to an uncontrolled outbreak and spread. Politics led to a failure to understand the nature of the virus (airborne), ineffective treatments (hand washing, disinfecting surfaces, "social distancing", instead of masking), and ultimately failure to reduce the spread. Politics meant that information about the initial outbreak was supressed, to avoid embarrassment. We can prevent future pandemics, but it requires effort. Not wanting to do the work is a political attitude.

This book is very large and it points to a need for a parent to read with their child, it looks like a 2 year old material to explore and feel, a book is a tangible item, and private and sublime, and yet in this book the text is for ten a 8 year olds and above, so this might be problematic for a 8 year old and teenagers audience, who enjoy and understand 'Harry Potter' on their own terms and without pictures! So it might be a bit patronising for 8 year olds and above...perhaps a 2 to 7 year olds could have fun with their parents, and perhaps a bit daunting and problematic even for parents who may have to keep explaining...for 8 year olds and above may want to feel older and want to hold a book in their hands and close to their chest, feel cute and small, and full of imagination, so a bit confusing...example, batman, Spiderman magazines can be folded up and hide them away, it is soft and can be folded small, to hide their imagination and so on...

There are a lot of conversations with atheists out there today. They are defining the nature of reality according to their atheism. Meanwhile consciousness is not understood: the hard problem of consciousness is still a hard problem. The expression “We are just animals.” explains the ethos. Humans evolved, there were many versions of the human but from day one the human was human. Introducing children to Harari’s worldview is not helpful, if young adults are depressed now and committing suicide that could worsen. I know a person who was raised thinking themselves; their body as ‘The Temple of the Holy Spirit.’ It was that thought that saved them after a terrible tragedy and helped them to cope and go on. I would not give Harari’s book for children to any child I know.

The Bible was just the wisdom of a few priests in ancient Jerusalem. Your feelings were the best mechanism for making decision that has been shaped by millions and millions of years of natural selection. So it made good advice to listen to your feelings." What a jerk

If their feelings tell someone to start sn affair with their neighbor’s wife it would be better not to listen to their feelings. If loyalty is the highest law, loyalty to two people: would be broken, to a wife and to a neighbor. Better to abide by highest law and ignore feelings, otherwise there would be chaos. Feelings can correspond to what is right and wrong that is why humans have reason to know the difference. We are not animals that operate by instinct alone which is fine for animals but not for humans.

The future is for the west impossible to imagine despite of Nietzsche. In the East it is India which leads the earth and world. So the first for the west interesting in the future is to read the works of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. The basis for our existence is not coincidence but an evolution process. We come and go, is that clear ? Where are we coming from and where are we going to. The answers no religious paper or philosopher of the west has tried to give in a reasonable manner. There were in the past beings who had not the intelligence of the homo sapiens, is that clear ? The truth is that there was a being already walking, called homo erectus living on earth for some time When he/she was living there was no homo sapiens yet. Clear ? So, homo sapiens had developed out of homo erectus. Clear ? Hm, now the west with all its great philosophers is of the wrong opinion that homo sapiens is the last species in the development. The first who felt that something new, a being with higher capabilities will replace homo sapiens was Nietzsche. Clear ? And Sri Aurobindo worked all his life for the coming of the supramental being. It is the hidden Divine in us which slowly evolves. When we go, we go only because our coat, our body cannot hold us any more and we go to heaven for rest. This rest comes to an end and we are looking for new parents, not an easy task. Finally we found them and give them a ray of our love kept for this purpose. They fall in love and enable our new body. In Buddhismus you learn that. We are not coming from our parents, we come through them. For our amazing author I recommend a visit to Auroville and more brilliance we will enjoy from him. Last not least what is the relation between intelligence of highest possible degree and intuition. It is a power which surpasses any intelligence. So, any intelligence from governments or industry or finance will never be able to steer the future in their likings when decisions from an intuitive mind are upcoming.

Everything isn't a story and it's having children of your own and raising them that makes you qualified to teach them what's what and who they should listen to and who they should ignore. The fact that this guy rejects a book he didn't write and doesn't understand, that doesn't have children of his own and no plan to have any yet wants to teach other people's children to think like him is sketchy at best. Seeing that he's in line with the W.E.F. should have warning bells ringing down the halls of every school around the world. Does he care about your children? Does he love them like their parents? On paper he might say that he does but let's see him change some diapers of the children of total strangers. I don't think so. "Science is the study of things in an objective manner so argument will cease concerning the things we don't know." Science isn't fear of Nature and taking vaccines as a result, science isn't hacking human beings, inventing new stories, GMO'S, or creating CORPORATE ENTITY'S so you can claim you own everything while keeping your face hidden. This guy isn't the Teacher and he has no idea what tomorrow will bring. He asks you to believe there is no truth, that because he doesn't understand the Book it can't possibly be understood, that calling belief and opinion Science makes it true. Money isn't a story money is a tool invented to equalize trade value. It's people like this guy that wants it to be a story that has everybody 31 trillion dollars in debt. Necessity is the Mother of all invention and experience the greatest Teacher. Buying what this guy has for sale is already been proven to be a failure buying more of it won't help anybody. If his book doesn't begin with I don't know then you know he's lying he's just another hustler trying to sell you and your kids worthless information.
