    I'm convinced that Yuto landed his tricks first try, and the cameraman convinced him to stage bails afterwards for realism.

    That one trick was suspicious but all the other crashes looked pretty nasty, but even the one in question was a pretty hard wreck and it's definitely plausible he was trying to get a better take

    I once was on vacation in Japan and met Yuto at the skatepark I was at. I couldn't believe it and asked him for an autograph. He was very nice and not only gave an autograph but also gave me a new deck, new shoes, new pants, a new car, paid for my college, helped my dad beat c*ncr, revived my dead grandma, bought my mom a house, gave me a new girlfriend AND ON TOP OF THAT told me that his favourite KZreadr is Gifted Hater. Thanks Yuto

    Two quick comments from someone living in Tokyo: 1. The first spot with the janky rail is in Omotesando/Harajuku, and it’s 100x jankier in person. Not to mention the incline on the landing and the fact that it’s one of the busiest pedestrian/vehicle streets in the city (I’m sure he hit it very early in the morning). 2. The train he’s riding is the bullet train (shinkansen)-which is the public transportation equivalent of nirvana. I’m sure he’ll have his own private bullet train soon enough, though. Solid part. Carry on.

    I’m still so bitter about that. I don’t even care for Nyjah, but come on. So maybe Tyshawn did a an indoor kickflip going really fast. Who cares? Was it the world’s longest kickflip? No. Was he at risk? No. Some BMX dorks had already hopped the same gap on a tank-ass Rental Bike that probably weighed a hundred pounds. If you’re going fast enough to clear the hole then you’re not going to fall in the hole no matter how bad the trick goes. Skaters have been proving that for decades. Meanwhile Nyjah (still annoying me the whole time) puts out massive parts elevating the demonstrated human possibilities of street skating to new levels of physical scale and technical complexity (again, I wish it was anyone else) and they’re like “yeah but Tyshawn did an indoor kickflip going really fast and his friends acted like it was a huge deal!!” smh /rant

    Metalwood is a sick golf shop in LA ran by a guy named Cole, he has some ties in the skate industry it seems. The shop itself specializes in refurbishing old golf clubs and getting people into the game without the pretentious stuffiness that the traditional golf world usually comes with. It's pretty sick and equally awesome to see Yuto repping them.

    I've been a keen follower of your commentary for some time now Joa, so I nearly had a seizure when two boxes of Cariumas showed up in our house. Turns out my wife got excited about the brand after seeing British actress Helen Mirren wearing a pair of green sneakers which cleverly matched her skirt, at the Cannes Film Festival last year. My wife is 54, but 35 years ago she worked on a college radio newspaper so the skate-punk rebellion is there, even if it's gotten a tad bourgeois. Once again, thank you for your efforts to afflict the comfortable.

    @frozennorth3426

    11 ай бұрын

    yep. it’s already bad enough that switch and regular are different and nollie and fakie are different, but mixing all 4 randomly when describing different elements of a trick is insanity. This most frequently comes up with things like - 180 ollie to “fakie nosegrind” vs - 180 ollie to “switch 5-0” Is it an bluntslide? Or a switch nosebluntslide? You’re right: let the pop of the trick establish the stance, and then describe from that context. Everyone can figure out how to do the math from there.

If I skate regular (left foot most comfortably forward), and pop a trick that rotates clockwise… - regular: backside - fakie: backside - nollie: backside - switch: frontside this idiosyncrasy came about as a result of the order in which these historic stances were developed: - regular - fakie (“riding backwards”) - nollie (“off the nose”) - switch-stance Once “switch” became a thing, the frontside/backside words finally had to reverse because a “switch frontside 180” should look like anyone else’s “frontside 180”, because that’s the whole damn point of “switch-stance” so there’s no symmetry. there’s 3 of one and one of the other, because two concepts got mixed up inconsistently: - is the pop in front or back? - what direction does the skater usually roll? and “switch” didn’t create the problem. the problem was not having a concept of “switch” when the structurally identical concepts of “fakie” and “nollie” got named. so ASSUMING we want to keep “switch” to preserve acknowledgment of what’s more difficult for a particular skater (instead of replacing “switch” with “usual stance fakie nollie” which seems like the Least sensible approach), what Would have kept everything as simple as possible would be either - saying “switch nollie” instead of “fakie” or - saying “switch fakie” instead of “nollie” …because regular and switch tricks are equivalent for opposite-stanced skaters (that’s the point), and fakie and nollie are equivalent - yet we don’t want to call fakie “switch nollie” because it’s basically the same as regular, just shoving the tail out a bit more to compensate for the opposite friction vector from the surface - and we don’t want to call nollie “switch fakie” because it doesn’t Feel switch. we’re still “rolling forward”, the comfortable way, not “backward” so these terms became So solidified in our consciousness as 3 “normal” structures of pop Prior To the popularization of the 4th stance (“switch”) that we can’t let go of the idea that there’s 3 regular ones and 1 backwards one but, if we base it on whether the initiating / lifting / not-popping foot is turning forward/toeward or backward/heelward (what it looks like if you don’t know if someone is regular or goofy) then the clockwise rotation is - regular: backside - fakie: backside - nollie: frontside - switch: frontside …which restores the balance of half the things (the things that Look frontside) being Frontside and half the things (the things that Look backside) being Backside and you don’t even have to rename the stances. You don’t even have to know any anyone’s stance to see a nollie or fakie trick and know whether it’s frontside or backside. You just see how they rotate out of the pop and already have the word for it. example: Suppose I see someone pop a basic backside half-cab flip. Shouldn’t I be able to say “that’s backside” and not have to wonder if it’s really a “frontside” Nollie which looks Exactly the same? After all, I don’t have to wonder if a basic frontside flip is regular or switch. I just see it and know it’s a frontside flip. I don’t need any special intel on the skater to know it’s a frontside flip. In could explain this stuff to my mom in a minute and she’s know it’s a frontside flip, regardless of who’s doing it …so why should everything go out the window when the pop comes from the Other end of the board. All of a sudden I need a bio on the guy to name a trick. It’s nonsense. Ok. I said “don’t get me started”, and then that got me started. lol my bad :/ /rant

    I tend to believe that a trick sequence should be named by hierarchy of your foot position and obstacle orientation before the intial pop into sequence. Yuto appears to be doing a nollie bs 270 to fs noseslide in Tampa. Yuto then does a switch tre flip to fs lipslide to regular/goofy out down the 11 or 12 stair, lol.

    Early "nollie 270 to handrail" pioneers were Danny Garcia (Nollie 270 Board in Mosaic) and Casey Rigney (Nollie 270 to back lip in Get Familiar; Both on the same rail btw). So the trick definitely has a history, but I'd say never has anyone owned the trick variation as much as Yuto does now. He is about to do one into sw back noseblunt (and I would call it that, because I see it as a sw back noseblunt, but instead of switch ollieing into it he nollie 180s into it, if that makes sense) at this rate, I am sure. Also (this will sound even more pedantic): I do not get the trickname nollie270 shuv to noseslide. I've definitely heard that loads of times (and even read as far back as 2003 in a Rick McCrank ad), but I refuse to call it that. Mainly because there's no nollie 270 shuv being attempted. We used to call it nollie bigspin to noseslide back in the prehistoric ages and that makes a lot more sense to me.

  • @jbtownsend9535

    @jbtownsend9535

    11 ай бұрын

    I could see calling it just a nollie pop-shuv nose. But it could also be nollie big-spin nose… In the same way you wouldnt call a 360 flip nose/tailslide 270, or a kickflip noseslide a 90 kickflip noseslide… although technically and for the sake of description that is what they are and explain what the board is doing better? So I guess there are grey areas or either/or areas between what tricks get collectively stamped and accepted, what names stick for the sake of brevity, and what the board and skater is actually doing according to skate trick identification. 😅

    Hoping he drops another like 4-5 min part from spots around the world near the end of the year. If so I think he’s the obvious SOTY. It’s crazy that Nyjah still hasn’t gotten it though (last year he was the obvious pick imo, as far as sheer gnarly difficulty and skill nobody touches his Need That part). I almost feel like Thrasher uses contest wins/participation against SOTY selection. Maybe only if it’s their own contest but otherwise they have always seemed to ignore any contests for SOTY picks, which is dumb as hell. Nyjah had at least two other years with the craziest parts and domination in contests. Last year was such an egregious snub to both Nyjah or Louie. Jones had like 3 mins of flat tricks over a garbage can and a few crazy clips that I thought were overhyped (the metro gap is not even that wide, a dude hopped it on a heavy electric bike and had no speed at all). Nyjah would say it was too small for his part honestly.
