This. This is why YOI deserves all the love it gets. It just brought figure skating world and anime together. Professionals and casual fans love the show all the same. The love these two community shared while enjoying the show is an achievement worth more than any awards it can get.

Sapphire Maiden Yuri on Ice has its appeal but is far from perfect, hence the differing opinions amongst casuals and critics. There will always be haters, but they are not the only reason.

weaboochan99999999999999 weaboochan99999999999999 By other figure skating anime, I will assume you're talking about Ginban Kaleidoscope, but correct me if I'm wrong. YOI has mainly three upper hand regarding this; timing, target audience and promotion. YOI comes out when Japan is really into figure skating, because of Yuzuru Hanyu's Sochi Olympics gold medal, unlike Ginban Kaleidoscope which was aired back in mid-2000s when enthusiasm regarding figure skating in general was relatively lower. YOI was catered towards mainly three groups of viewers, namely figure skating fans, people who support healthy depiction of LGBTQ+ relationship in anime and anime fans in general. YOI was promoted by a lot of world class figure skaters through social medias like Twitter, hence giving the show more exposure.

Honestly feeling blessed at how much positive love the show gets from real skaters. So precious and blessed. :D

Yay Johnny! He skates at my little sister's rink and performs in the showcase fundraiser there every year (the rink's a nonprofit). He is really amazing to watch perform live and he is a really sincere and kind person. My sister is on a synchro team and they also always perform in the showcase because they compete nationally (which is crazy because she's like 10) but at the end of the showcase every year he always makes sure to take pictures with all of them and sign their skates and he'll just talk with them. I've seen him almost laying down on the ice to sign skates one after another.

i love him so much aaaah! also i agree with him when he says it's nice to see the sport he dedicated his whole life to represented on the media. i don't skate but i've definitely taken an interest in figure skating, and hopefully YOI has inspired future atheltes/figure skaters to pursue their dreams and maybe they'll be the ones we see on tv, winning medals, in a few years... :) i just really love that yamamoto and kubo's work has inspired so many people from all over the world!

literally a frozen cornfield :) johnny grew up in rural pennsylvania, and his town had no ice rinks. one winter, the cornfield behind his house froze over and he skated on it in a pair of used ice skates, weaving in and out of corn stalks. he was a natural!

It’s so comforting knowing that he started when he was twelve. At first my parents were hesitant to support my dreams about skating because most start from a young age. He proves that four years of hard work and dedication can get you to where you want to be.

I'm so glad he picked Yuri! He's really a great main character, easily relatable in his normalcy, but inspiring none the less. He definitely needs more recognition.

I don't normally like videos but Johnny Weir seems to be so sweet in the way he talks and so gentle with his smiles. I gotta oughta like him, and you've got a supporter I me definitely!!! (piano,violin and cello make me cry too ;-; )

Johnny is such a stand up guy. Always fun in his interviews, and electric on the ice. I also recently realized that he presents the Kentucky Derby on TV. As a dressage rider, this makes me love him even more. Love of YOI is yet another plus!

i love that scene too, it's beautiful because their relationship isn't just yuri idolizing victor, they have a mutual appreciation for one another because victor saw the beauty in him and in his skating way before he became his coach
