Yunus Musah picks USMNT over England: How it happened & where he'll play | Futbol Americas | ESPN FC

Спорт

Less than a year after Sergino Dest's decision to represent the United States over the Netherlands, the USMNT lands another big commitment from Valencia teenager Yunus Musah, who chose the U.S. over England, Italy and Ghana. On the latest episode of Futbol Americas on ESPN+, Sebastian Salazar and Herculez Gomez discuss whether the 18-year-old will be a starter and what position he will play best in for Gregg Berhalter's team. Plus, the guys are joined by ESPN FC's Jeff Carlisle, who breaks down how U.S. Soccer was able to get Musah on board after his progression through England's youth ranks and how he fits into the plans ahead of the World Cup qualifying.

    If you're talking about getting playing time as well, picking the USMT was the better choice. The England squad is overloaded with young talent right now. The US is starting to build a strong batch of young talent and it's exciting.

  • @Landwehr900
    @Landwehr9003 жыл бұрын

    The division in here proves how narrow minded both sides are. Yunus Musah is not the second coming of Messi and is now infrequently playing for one of the worst teams in La Liga. THAT BEING SAID, anyone in the comments talking about he's not that good or it's an easy ride to get into the US, England (World Cup semifinalist) REALLY wanted this guy and were adamant on bringing him into their program, in addition to Italy I believe. If he stays healthy and gets regular minutes with a club more suited to his skillset, he IS going to be a generational talent. Same type of snark when Dest chose the US ("Oh he just can't get into the Dutch team"), but he's good enough to get into the Barcelona first XI?? US fans are def overhyping so many young guys right now because the standard has raised so much from what we're used to and a little reality check is necessary FOR SURE. BUT, anyone in Europe or South America who isn't super alarmed about the waves of talent now being pumped out of the US/tied to the US program also need a reality check. The US needs to get its boys on the field and see how good everyone really is consistently otherwise we're just talking a lot of hot air, but everyone else needs to start worrying about the fact that u21 American players are now in the top 8 for minutes received in Europe's top 5 leagues. Context and brain cells matter, people. Good luck to Yunus!

    I feel that the USMNT is going to face a lot of problems with this young squad. Just saying when they're winning it's all good vibes but it can break very easily. Look at the Wenger kids or Ajax for that matter. But TBF, this is basically what they can afford right now. The seniors are nowhere near up for it.

With the us, he's almost a sure in. So his choice in my opinion is more based on actual playing minutes. The visabillity he will get on the world cup stage will be better for his carreer if he's actually on the field and not sitting on an England or Italy bench.

And no I'm not basing the us or trying to be disrespectful there's just a lot more competition for spaces in England and it's a tough ask for anyone at the moment to get in the team because the strength in depth at the moment for England is extremely high

Dont be surprised when we see a ton of other English players switch allegiance for game time over the few years, and visibility because England is too competitive, the same way France has been for the last 10 years

Since you know so much about it, maybe you'd tell us about these "better players" who are not being called up. Can you think of any names of these "better players"?

  • @jeffmerten7412

    @jeffmerten7412

    @M Ogaden you're naming a 23 year old centre-back on loan from Chelsea who has played only 3 times for Milan as "better" than the 18 year old who features regularly on the wing for Seville? Thanks for reinforcing my point: we don't yet know how the 18 year old will mature and develop. Zaha is great, no doubt. Meanwhile, his "not being called up" is due (lately) to his switch to Ivory Coast, because he'd have had a shot for England by now if he'd been patient. And he's 22 or so - not the same thing as judging an 18 year old.

    They already stated that in the beginning because Musah's situation is more like Julian Green. Julian Green played in Germany and was pretty much non existent by the time he turned 20. Freddy Adu could barely make it in the MLS and was 14 when all that occurred so it's no where near getting a player who often starts for Valencia at 18 years old.
