In the days before turboshaft engines, coaxial and intermeshing rotor (Kaman) machines were an effective way to make maximal use of the limited power available from piston engines. When the powerful and light turboshaft engines arrived, the inefficient "penny farthing" designs, with tailrotor, became dominant. The advent of electrically powered helicopters, with their limited power capacity, could see a return to the more efficient designs.

I thought that Kaman machines were less efficient, due to their off-vertical slant. I've heard their rotorheads are simpler, though.

@@manofsan No, not at all. If you are referring to the reduced downward thrust vector due to the slight angle of the blades, this is more than offset by the energy required to constantly flap the entire rotor blade of a non-Kaman design. The Kaman "Flaperons" are very lightweight and require no direct rotation of the rotor blade, opting instead to flex the blade through the aerodynamic force of the flaperon. Each mast has its own "swashplate" located underneath the mast rather than at the top like most do, and since the controls are manipulating only a slight force to move those lightweight flaperons the entire mechanism is significantly lighter weight than conventional controls. Another benefit to not losing all that energy through constantly rotating the rotor blades this way and that is that the entire rotor system on a Kamen lasts about as long as the airframe itself, rather than requiring regular replacement. The Kaman intermeshing rotor system is extremely energy efficient, helicopter-wise. The intermeshing rotor system was invented by a Nazi named Anton Flettner, who also designed the Rotor Ship (sailing ships with huge columnar rotors rather than fabric sails).

@@adamchurvis1 - which is the best Kaman-type intermeshing machine, in your opinion? Is it Kmax? Which is the most modern/advanced of these machines?

@@manofsan Yes, I would vote for the K-MAX, which has all the advantages of the Flettner plus the many innovations Kaman invented. It is an incredibly versatile machine, and can be fitted as a UAV that can switch back and forth to Piloted Mode with the flip of a switch. Which Kaman is your favorite, and why?

wow this is excellent. One thing i noticed..the prop is kind of low, i think you should just place higher landing gear under the helicopter to lift it higher. and you should make a conventional version of this that is gas/petrol powered then i guess it would sell like crazy. especially if you have a kit version. and if it was a 2 seater , would be even better,

+roidroid, Likely to settle yaw during forward flight for smoother flight rather than rely only on coaxial torque adjustments to counter undesired yaw. You don't want to the stabilization control system do all the work to have constantly bump minor adjustments to keep the thing straight.
