Yunchan Lim 임윤찬 - Preliminary Round Recital 2022 Cliburn Competition

Музыка

Preliminary Round Recital
June 4, 2022
Van Cliburn Concert Hall at TCU
YUNCHAN LIM
South Korea I Age 18
HOUGH Fanfare Toccata
COUPERIN “La Couperin” from Pièces de clavecin, Book IV, order 21
MOZART Sonata No. 9 in D Major, K. 311
CHOPIN Variations on “Là ci darem la mano,” op. 2
Yunchan Lim launched onto the international music stage when he was 14. He won second prize and the Chopin Special Award in his first-ever competition, the Cleveland International Piano Competition for Young Artists in 2018. That same year, he stood out as the youngest participant in the Cooper International Competition, where he won the third prize and the audience prize, which provided the opportunity for him to perform with the Cleveland Orchestra. 2019 meant more accolades, when, at the age of 15, he was the youngest to win Korea’s IsangYun International Competition, where he also took home two special prizes.
Now just 18, he has performed across South Korea-including with the Korean Orchestra Festival, Korea Symphony, Suwon Philharmonic, and Busan Philharmonic Orchestras, among others-as well as in Madrid, at the invitation of the Korea Cultural Center in Spain. He also participated in the recording of “2020 Young Musicians of Korea,” organized by the Korean Broadcasting System and released that November.
A native of Siheung, Yunchan currently studies at the Korea National University of Arts under Minsoo Sohn. Coming to Fort Worth, he says he is “looking forward to playing in front of the warmest and most passionate audience in the world.”

Now who else today plays Mozart with such articulations and a pedal that sound as close as it gets to a FORTEPIANO while keeping a baroque phrasing AND a Bel canto musicality??? This rare balance is what makes Mozart so difficult. And he nails it like no one else. Can't wait for his Schubert and of course Beethoven sonatas that will become historic. How lucky we are to witness this one of a generation genious poet that has it all while projecting nobility humbleness. He re defines the word "virtuosity" as having the profound and generous capacity to choose from endless possibilities with taste, logic and beauty rather than exploding (sometimes painfully...) with fast bravura.

I'm rather blown away by his performance here but I'm simply a fan of classical music. I don't know enough to make a glowing statement so many people have made about his majesty. I expect this performance got folks thinking... and we know he delivered throughout the competition. LOVE his work at the keyboard... and he is a delightful human being... a tender soul. @@RaineriHakkarainenHis Rach 4 is undoubtedly among the best and his musical maturity is truly phenomenal. He reminds me more of Horowitz than of Zimmerman or Kissin. But I have to agree that his playing does often sound like a punchy typewriter and can often be too soft. I agree that he’s a bit overhyped right now and still needs to fine tune his tempo and flow. I also prefer the tone of those in your list of Greatest: Richter, Pollini, Rubenstein.

The Hough fanfare(played from memory) was new to both Yunchan and me-and enjoyable. What a superb young artist. Everything he plays is a magical experience for me. Glad I'm still alive to hear him. The Couperin with it's myriad delicate ornamentations was a precious jewel! Forget the harpsichord; Yunchan and this instrument did it proud. To be able to play Mozart like this takes enormous skill and incredible control to play more than the written notes authentically. Yunchan's delicacy and precision of both touch and timing in this pretty Sonata is a rarity. Believe me. Those who say his choices are too easy to play and don't compare with the pyrotechnical displays of other competitors' choices really need to try playing them!!! The lovely variations by Chopin answered some of the obvious technical demands many look for in piano competitions, but Yunchan kept it nicely under control-lyrical and lovely. Thanks for these beautiful memories.
