Yuja Wang: Rachmaninov Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini Op. 43 [HD]

Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg conducted by Gustavo Gimeno. Parc Kinnekswiss, July 1, 2023.
At least 12 cameras recorded this live concert, conducted by a video conductor behind the scenes. The original recording had a synchronization issue; I delayed the audio track by 0.1 sec in this remix.

If the music from Variation #18 cannot move you, nothing will. Rachmaninoff turns Paganini's music upside down in this variation and you don't hear Paganini anymore, just music from heaven. Watch Ms Wang's hands and fingers at play, they are nonhuman. If you don't play attention, you will not realize how long her fingers are. She is sent to earth by God.

Peter Chen you are brilliant bringing Yuja to the world - may good fortune shine on you
真愛看她彈琴時的嘴。不停的動、時帶笑、時咬牙。不知她是在和鋼琴溝通還是和作曲家對話。美極。 love to watch her mouth while she was playing. Seems she was talking to the composer or to the piano. So lovely !
Amazing performance thank you.
Yuja:absolutely magnificent, as usual.❤❤
Bravissima Yuja!!!!!!!!!
Yuja is amazing! Anything she chooses to play. She is a musician par excellence!
Pure bliss
Thank you, Peter. What an electric performance!
A beautiful performance, especially variation 18. I love the way she throws away the ending, just as the writing indicates.
Yuja is so unique . . . not just as a spectacular technician, but her presence, energy, beauty, and maybe just a bit of quirky humor, elevates anything she has ever performed to an entirely different level. An excedingly rare "perfect storm" of the genetic lottery, upbringing and surrounding supporters who inspired and created who she is now, and may yet become.
Wonderful
Grazie di esistere Yuja grande dono di Dio!
thank u for identifying each variation for us listeners. very helpful indeed

I’ve heard mannyyy interpreteisongs of this piece Since its one of my favorites. From the first movement this professional sat down …., wow . No more words for this interpreter. I long she had been my child.!!!

I saw her last evening playing magnificent as always in London South bank she played for almost 3 hours with countless encores.
OK, first time I've ever seen a cellist wearing gloves. And on the left hand, no less. And Yuja's interpretation and technical ability are unparalleled, as usual.

@PeterChenW the synchronization seems absolutely perfect here. A very nicely produced video. The captions and timed contents are great to have as well.
Awesome orchestra music ❤
Yuja Wang pure genius - truly on another level - a level where her spiritual power sits beside the obvious technical mastery and somehow we get a window into the heart of the composer who no doubt is watching and laughing with pleasure
Brava! That was bloody amazing ❤
Great job with this video production. There had to be at least 8 cameras involved to capture the performance. And I liked how the volume was handled for the various instruments when they had the spotlight. Their contribution came out very clearly. There had to be microphones all over the place. And the editor worked hard to put the final product together.
sublime !
The crowd clapping at the end of the 10th variation really pissed me off for some reason. 😆
Yuja Wang in the Year of the Dragon - Brooke Watson 2024 I hear the heavy final breathing as completion Draws the great composer’s mind From the final black ink notes Into eternal blessed sleep And too I hear the clack and thunder of a thousand horses Dreaming through the misted ages Bearing fearlessly their precious burden across the centuries Until at last - As if by some invisible heavenly direction Those tender childish woman hands reach out And Draw his blood alive again: His mighty spirit woken and now bursting out across our fragile moments How can this be? How can this tiny powerhouse crack open the black ink courses with such purity; Where Saint Cecelia offers up her motes of love Where Her Beauty dances in amongst those black ink notes That is where Her Beauty is now shining through those tender woman hands Her own young Beauty Adorning the ancient breath Adorning the light - and liberating love’s true soul once more - A tender musicians hands shaping love’s spirit on god’s distant shore.
Those who are critical of her playing should understand that playing in an outside venue the soloist must adapt to the conditions, which in this case is most challenging. For me she does a grand attempt.
The Best Music never dies ...

Dearest Wang Yuja, Thank you for your life in all that it ever has been, ever is, and ever will be! May your Divine love, wisdom, and understanding in your actions of the music expressed through you, touch the hearts and minds of all humanity and beyond. May the Divinity of the music as Divinely expressed through you, reach the Divinity of all humanity, in this world and beyond. May your Divine expressions through your love and understanding of the music, reach through to all the Divine love and wisdom of all humanity, and beyond. May we fortunate enough to have heard the music expressed through you, experience in our hearts and minds, a miraculous and revolutionary reverence towards a peaceful loving healing of all our hearts and minds, upon hearing you play, may it inspire in us all a greater realisation towards all our aspirations for what is possible within a greater understanding and fathoming of all our hearts and minds, upon us hearing the music played through you, May it spark a revolution in our aspirations for what is possible for the whole world over, and over, and over, May all our hearts and minds be healed, the whole world over, and over, and over, as well as through, and through, and through, May we all be blessedly healed. May the realisation for a revolution in our aspirations for what is possible through you, then extend further to all of nature in this world and, beyond, and beyond, and, beyond. May your Divine fathoming and actions of the music forever free you from all attachment and aversion and forever and instantaneously set you free from all and any torment and suffering, May this be true for you in music, as well as true for you in life, may you forever be free from all torment and suffering. Then through your realisation of freedom, may we all without exception, through your freedom, may we all without exception, may we all without exception be set free too…May this be in all, May it be for all, May it be in all, for all, in all, in all the Ten directions, and may it be in all the Four times, and beyond, and beyond, and beyond... Wang Yuja, May you live a long, and prosperous, happy fruitful life, and may the world be a better place for having you been born, lived, learned, played and shared your life within it! With Love from Love to Love, Yours Sincerely, Faithfully and Forevermore…. Will you someday please bless us in person here too on our shores in Australia, with a visit to Sydney or Melbourne with one or more of your blessed performance’s?

Magnificent performance and an excellent production. One nit--the remote camera in close-up on the keyboard was shaking and distracting. It could have been fixed in post with digital stabilization.

I don't see camera shaking, but the piano was bouncing in the heavier passages, even the microphone in front was swaying to the music:-) See var. 13 starting 9:45, also the ending starting 23:00.

@@PeterChenW Thank you for your reply. I do see shaking at 00:20. The camera is zoomed in, which highlights the motion. It was much less noticeable after that. You mentioned the mic swaying at 23:00, which is very true! However, if you look at the upper-right edge of the piano, you can see that the background audience moves with the piano. It's more subtle than at 00:20. I think the camera stand is shaking from the same vibration on the stage. In any case, I loved the video. Thanks for sharing it!

@@FetchTheCow you're right, when Yuja pounds the piano, there's a whole lotta shakin' goin' on, including the on-stage camera! Too bad youtube no longer supports its image stabilization tool, and I don't feel like redoing and re-uploading. The little shaking just reminds us this is an outdoor concert with all its imperfections and distractions.
It's the South Bank Show!
What does "conducted by a video conductor" means??? I read it in the description, but i can't get what does it mean: i see a real conductor there
@longhaulblue
8 ай бұрын
The correct term is "director". There are several cameras and what you are watching at any moment is one camera. So, someone has to decide which camera to show in the final video. This is usually the job of a director. The description writer is using the term 'video conductor' to suggest that with so many cameras, the director is acting just like the conductor.

The video conductor must know the score well enough to switch camera shots to the appropriate orchestra players at the right time. This was done in real time, as you can see some players saw themselves on the monitor and smiled (see 0:34 var. 1 and 17:02 var. 18). So yes there was an orchestra conductor and a video conductor.

I don't know what caused it, perhaps the way the orchestra was mic'd up but the balance between the orchestra and the soloist was way wrong on the tutti sections. It felt almost like a contest between the two, which is a shame. Orchestra played at ffff the whole time! At some points the soloist was literally drowned out.. Yuja is an incredible talent and I really like to hear her. However, this performance was flawed in my humble opinion......

Recordings may sound different to the actual concert itself. Normally these type of performances the recordings will be done on the mixer itself. And the mixer might be tuned with balance for a hall, or outdoor settings. Some recordings (even in live concerts / performances) were done on individual channels instead, which can be tuned to suit playback.
Simple explanation: She's not from this planet. She can't be!
05:03 08:23 09:45
It is nightmarish to perform such a piece outdoors with no sound reflections, all the downside of a very unsympathetic space. Dozens of microphones no matter how carefully positioned will combine in an unmusical way. Why was this even done? I’m sad to say, it sounds horrendous. This outcome would not have been unanticipated either. Musicians would absolutely know just by walking onto the ‘stage’ that they were in for a very difficult day. Some promoter(s) got it in their head that this was a great idea. Players and audience alike suffered for that.

@rweaver6
3 ай бұрын
@@JW-br5nd Would I? If it arose, certainly. But it's not likely to arise, as women naturally take more risks with their attire and Ms Wang does so routinely. This is show business and dress is an undeniable part of the presentation. Ms Wang obviously does things her own way and it varies quite a bit. Compare what she wore at her 2009-2010 Verbier performances. Very different approach and in my opinion, superior. But of course, I admit, my opinion does not count for much, I'm just one fan. I just don't love stiletti as you do and yes, they would affect my gait, big time. But thankfully, it never arises. Smile.
18th var. is way too disjointed by her. She's over-dramatizing it to try to score style points. But that's nothing new - all these high-end concert pianists do the same thing, and wind up ruining it. And the orchestra here just follows along with her mistake. Listen to the recording of Rach. playing it, with the lovely left hand syncopation, with those notes during that passage being brought out. You _never_ hear that anywhere else. She's got the chops to do _anything,_ but she just needs to quit trying to win an Oscar for her interpretation of the 18th, and just let the score do its thing without the drama.
