Yuja Wang, Brahms, Piano Concerto n° 2

Here, with the full score, is one of the masterpieces of the piano concerto, in an interpretation that is one of Yuja's masterpieces! Depth in the first movement, energy in the second, dreamy delicacy in the third, butterfly lightness in the fourth. And all of this with a vision of the work, a strength of conviction that draws the whole orchestra along, magnificent by the way.The score shows the richness and complexity of the piano part, which here becomes limpid.

Saying the 'best' is rather a tall order for such a short woman (a wisher under 5'0")! There ARE many others. But not many, perhaps none, who DO inspire, and excite 'soul and 'heart'. On that she is almost one of a kind.

A masterwork by Brahms- a masterwork by Yuja! She doesn't need to play the star, she leads the orchestra at the right moments, she accompagnies the orchestra at the right moments.... Her solo parts are breathtaking, but not in the sense of a empty virtuosity, no - in the sense of Liszt's virtuosity: only to serve the music! Her chamber music parts with the cello shows why she is one of the most accomplished chamber musicians alive!

I don't know where all that passion and power comes from but only Yuja's unique technical abilities apparently can capture what she must feel inside while playing a piece like this. It's like, "where does she get it from". I speak from experience and only when the technique is there can an artist express what they feel from the music in their playing. Because Yuja's technique is so uniquely extraordinary are we lucky enough to get a glance at how this beautiful artist is really feeling. We should all listen and let it bring us to the same emotional heights

A giant soul and mind erected this Parthenon of musical gifts to us. Here, framed in the centerpiece, a tour guide, not a club-fisted pianistic Meister, but a dainty edelweiss of a girl with a talent as big as her subject. I've tried to compare her with others at this piece--No one surpasses Yuja's Brahms.

These were my thoughts exactly. I've been listening to this work since the late fifties and this was (for me) the best of many good cello performances of what I personally consider Brahms' greatest melody, in what was arguably his greatest work. Yuja added to her contribution in the third movement by the brilliantly delicate opening to the final movement. (Also listen to the passage at 20.12 to 20.20 as an illustration of Yuja's dynamic range.) I struggle to imagine a greater performance of this music.

It's not romantic music at all. If you listen to Brahms for the first time, it is difficult to understand. It's like reading a poem. Its not the mere meaning of the singular words, but there is the higher idea between the words, or beyond the words. You need a sence reason to understand it. Maybe you should listen to the piece more then once.

"It's just very samey all through. I don't rate it." Well, that can almost be said of any great composer of any era. Let's just say you, like Tchaikovsky, do not like Brahms sound world. You are perfectly justified in having that personal opinion. But it is hard to credit you are 'mystified' at others, including Ms.Wang, loving it, as I do.
