It must be exhausting to play with such concentration and intensity for 50 minutes. What a virtuoso Yuja Wang is. People love to criticize her, mostly for her performance wardrobe choices. As if that matters. She could wear pajamas and a coffee-stained robe for all I care. Her playing is sublime.

Critics come and go, dime a dozen, most just blowhards, wanna be sages, but truthfully, Yuja Wang is one of best in world. Her interpretations, phrasing, touch, virtuosity, sensitivity, integrity, brilliance, are superb. I'm 70, been into classical music since age 10. Yuja Wang has become my all time favorite pianist. Critics be damned!

Hey man, I'm only 68, but I was BORN with a piano in my mouth. ;-) My dad was a fairly famous pianist, and I started formal, classical lessons at age 6. Yuja gets my vote too -- greatest in the world. As great (but different) as Horowitz in his prime, way back in the early 50's.

Further to the above, I have since listened to many other recordings of this massive concerto, because for me it is the greatest of all of them. The most recent (well performed, but the sound track lacked something) was by Seong -Jin Cho, whose work I really admire. Yuja, for me, this is still the most definitive version yet. Thank you.

Brahms was an incredible genius to have created this collosal masterpiece, but Yuja Wang is a magician in this incomparable performance. Fifty minutes of pure concentration, memorization and emotional intrensity, never missing a note or subtle nuance in this glorious music. If there is anyone who listens and watches this without experiencing the pure rapture of it is lost.

Amen to that. In my later teens I saw Tom Bromley (who I think lived near Birmingham) play this at the Town Hall Birmingham in about 1968 and, right from the first notes of that first hearing, the piece has had a hold over me. Brahms really is one of the truly great composers, one I come back to time and again. Whatever group of musicians he is writing for, he always has something important to say.

To call someone a stunningly beautiful pianist usually refers primarily to their musical quality, and has no necessary reference to their physical appearance. Or perhaps you read into it what you want to, in light with your own preferences. And he only calls Yuja Wang "one of the best pianists to bring this piece alive", and therefore doesn't imply that there are no others. Does anyone who praises any pianist playing Brahms always have to praise Helene Grimaud as well?

An impressive performance, hard-driving in the first and last movements while full of rich lyricism and introspection in the slow movt. Except for that unfortunate moment (at 47'00") where orchestra and pianist are notably out of sync at the entrance into the coda. Kudos to the sound engineers who managed to give us a spacious and balanced recording in an outdoors setting, which is very hard to do. Wang's smiling and (by now) deeply sensitive and unfailing alert performance reminds me of Gil Shaham's violin playing - serene, deeply attentive, and filled with the joy of working with a top-notch ensemble. Beautiful!

These days we, I mean I, need a reminder of the human capacity to create beauty, harmony, and grace. Ms. Wang was the star of the show, but the members of the orchestra, the conductor who led them, and the people in the audience who supported the effort, and came together to share this experience, all were a part of the creative process. And of course, we appreciate the architect Mr. Brahms, for bestowing upon his brothers and sisters the grand design. The idiots of the world are a little more tolerable now.

Please don’t get carried away. No doubt that Yuja is magnificent here, but there are other pianists who are equally quite good, playing this piece. @@ronaldbeield7946 not all conductors do, look at some symphonies that Bernstein conducted. In one video on KZread he conducted Brahms' 3rd symphony, with the score on the music stand closed. And I wouldn't doubt that most orchestral players would be able to play from memory, I have seen orchestras playing from memory, it's just way easier with sheet music in this context. With chamber music, I'd always recommend sheet music, because it's way more necessary to know what the other players are doing (from notes in your score), since you can't follow a conductor.

No other concerto so drains the player physically, mentally, and emotionally, not even Brahms" Second, which receives probably ten performances to every one of the First. But the First is THE GREATEST SINGLE PIECE OF MUSIC EVER PENNED BY MORTAL MAN. Its only rivals for that distinction: the Requiem of Mozart and the Ninth Symphony of Beethoven. All in the selfsame key of d minor. Coincidence???.
