My friend and I got lost in the middle of the day on endless unmarked country roads out in Texas where we had never been before. We were in prime health and smart enough to have our own little home business. But we were city girls. It was scary. We kept driving and driving and driving - for hours. There were no "land marks" and none of the dirt roads were identified. I was really scared we'd run out of gas and never find "civilization". I can't imagine being intellectually challenged and making just one wrong turn, at night, in a country setting with no familiar landmarks, no lights and no people. When I lived in Florida, a little old lady got lost in an unmarked country area when she made ONE wrong turn returning home from the doctor. She repeatedly tried calling on her cell phone, but couldn't tell anyone where she was. She was eventually found, deceased. She had driven around, lost, until she ran out of gas and the heat got to her. Many times, people that are used to living in a population dense area, can get pretty disoriented when surrounded by nothing but country in all directions. If you add black-out night or heat or cold into the mix, it can be really dangerous. I think that's what happened. Thanks for reading this long comment!

My twin is mentally handicapped, but functional - can drive, has a job, is married, got her degree. She does not do well with panic and will do bizarre things. She locked her keys and phone in her car at a gas station and is shy around strangers, so she stood by her car for three hours before someone noticed and offered help. She has no common sense, God bless her. Thought she could clean her cloth mask by spraying it with Lysol. I could 100% see her in a situation like this. It's heartbreaking. I don't think anything nefarious or insidious happened. I think this is a case of several mentally compromised men who panicked and abandoned all common sense.

Yeah, my sister also has a developmental disability. She’s only 19 so she’s still pretty young, but I can still see how “normal” adult situations would be extremely difficult to navigate. Give her a can and a can opener, and she might not be able to connect the dots, especially in a high-stress survival situation. She’d know in theory that can openers open cans, but in a survival situation, I don’t know if she’d be able to act on that information the way I could.

My daughter is 19 and shy. She doesn't have mental delayment, but is extremely shy (although she has come out of her shell a lot since she started college and working). Your comment reminds me of things she will do just like your sister. She recently got a brand new car that came with free oil changes, one day she went to the work of my oldest daughters boyfriend because she needed air in her tire. He works at an oil changing garage and his co-workers just started doing an oil change and she was too shy to tell them she didn't need one, so she ended up paying almost $50 for an oil change on a brand new vehicle that was only a few weeks old. Another time, when she was 15 she was being driven to dance class by her sisters bf (same one as above) and he got pulled over for a headlight out and the police asked why he was with a teen girl on a Friday night. The police sperated them and tried to ask her and she wouldn't answer them because she was too shy, which obviously didn't look good on our other daughters bf who was just doing us a favor. So yes, I could definitely see her not wanting to ask someone for help and just keep walking in the wrong direction.

At an elevation of 4400 ft and in February, I’m sure it was quite cold. It was dark and I think they simply got lost. None of them had ever been camping or outdoors much so they had no survival skills. Thank you, Dr Grande for your work everyday. I love your kindness and your shirt today.

Let’s see….four of them were low functioning….the fifth one had a mental disorder that required medication and had a criminal record which, to me, is indicative of a fairly unstable individual with very little patience for nonsense and I’m sure the other four were likely intellectually unable to deal with him as he was off his medications. I’d say Bingo…you’re probably right on target with what happened. They can’t find that fifth man because he set off on his own and froze to death somewhere in those mountains far away from the others. If animals ate off the bodies of the others who were found outside, Then wherever the fifth guy fell and died he too likely had his body ravaged by animals and scattered all over. They’ll never find him. I doubt he’s alive anywhere. It was freezing cold outside and he wasn’t super man, although he may have thought he was. All five of these men should have been supervised on that road trip to the basketball game. Very sad. I feel bad for their families.

No two of the men had been in the army and in the army the first thing they are taught is how to survive in any situation they are taught how to make shelter heat and how to hunt and another one of the men had walked and hitchhiked from Oregon to California

The reason most people get lost and die in the wilderness can be explained by the phrase "somebody had a bad idea".

Bad choices and lack of intellect to do what was normal in a situation like that….dig and push that car out and retrace your route back down the mountain. That’s all they had to do. Seems odd they couldn’t figure that out but they were low functioning. These were the kind of people who would have difficult time heating up a frozen pot pie in the oven or boiling water. That’s how low functioning they were. I feel bad because they must have been so scared, especially with the fifth guy having a serious mental illness we’ll never know how bad he was off his medication. They never found him so I think he went in his own direction into the abyss.

Or simply people take the world for granite and simply fail to realize the many scenarios possibilities and pitfalls that lie ahead of us that one can vary much easily find themselves caught up in trouble before it's to late and your lost in the woods up shit creek with out a paddle and end up the decoration on milk cartons and this could happen too you me him her they them someone somebody anybody everybody you know what I'm saying .

What I believe he meant was although all of those men were full grown (in the age and appearance meanings of the word) when faced with a unexpected trauma situation their response would be similar to how someone a lot younger might react under the same circumstances.

@@HavanaSyndrome69 they were functional enough to go to a sporting event on their own. Unfortunately no one could look into a crystal ball and see that they would be in that situation. Preventing disabled people from doing things that they CAN do unsupervised just because there is a slight chance that something like this MIGHT happen is not practical. Non disabled people end up in silly fatal situations while going about their every day lives all the time. But we all still have to live our lives in the most fulfilling way we can. And so did they. And that meant not being followed around by a babysitter their whole lives.

@@theurbanloner8879 i don't get offended. I am just educating people who don't understand disabilities. You can say that a man who has lost his eyes is blind. But if something tragic happens to him, you don't need to say that he should have had a babysitter. That too much responsibility was given to him by letting him go about his own life. Tragedies happen to people all the time. People, even people with disabilities cant live their lives worrying about the worst case scenario. Never going alone to a sporting event in case something mysterious happens and they all end up lost in the woods starving to death. Something very similar happened where I live to The Lost Boys of Pickering. They didn't have mental disabilities, and they still died mysteriously.

This makes me very sad. There men had found ways to live with their disabilities and seemed to be good friends. But a series of events lead to a tragedy. And...that's how it goes sometimes. So many people are one bad day away from something terrible.

My psychic abilities are telling me that Dr. Grande will have a new arrangement behind him very soon. It's a vision.

I , being one !!....i'm from the east coast , and when i first heard this story i could not believe it could snow like that in california ...i understand it is elevated and in the mountains of sierra nevada but i just could not wrap my head around it at first .

Personally I think Gary Mathias liked to see himself as the leader of the group, and they probably were a little intimidated by him. I think he wanted them to drive to his friends house, which is down the road they were traveling, and they just stopped when they saw the broken down beetle and then just freaked out. Incredibly sad. Dying of exposure is really miserable

This story is interesting and it's unfortunate for the families that they've never gotten closure.

That romance novel "burn" - total zinger and what I look for in a Dr. Grande video, a snarky reality check ❤

If you want facts about this case other then 44 year old newspaper clippings, I suggest listening to The Yuba County 5 Podcast by Mopac Audio. It is years in the making with first hand accounts. Family, friends and investigators involved in this case have recently interviewed to share the facts and the truths about the boys. Family’s would like people to now know the truth is out there. I don’t believe anyone reading old paper clippings can truly understand the circumstances around this case. They did not “just get lost” !!

I immediately assumed bad actors. I believe the guy who had a friend in the area convinced the guys to maybe stay the night at his place and took the wrong turn on the way and met bad people. I wouldn't be so quick to pass off the guy who had a heart attacks story regarding seeing woman holding a child. If theres anything I believe these men would stop for possibly is to help a woman and child. Who wouldn't in that circumstance? I would imagine it would have a decent success rate in at least getting someone off their route or path.

It´s such a tragic thing when people just take "facts" from unqualified sources, and repeat them without proper analysis. This only serves to provide more hard times for the families.

This is my biggest gripe with Grande's uploads and analysis in general: lack of or faulty information (garbage in/ garbage out). What Mr Grande failed to include in his upload is the fact that Shone (the heart attack guy) was heard by numerous witnesses at the bar he walked to the morning after the Yuba Five disappeared saying, "I should have done this years ago (or a long time ago)" and he said this more than once. This fact was reported to law enforcement during the investigation by more than one person. Secondly, Shone also had an intellectually disabled daughter/stepdaughter which I think is critical to understanding the situation.

This is the case that I have not and will never stop thinking about for years to come and I must know what happened before I die. I'm so glad you touched on this case!

This story is so sad and weird it makes my brain hurt !!!...there's NO WAY I could even begin to speculate, let alone create an interesting dialogue on this one.

I am about 9 minutes in and so confused. I cannot wait for Dr Grande to tell me what he thinks happened so I can agree and be at ease again.

This its one of the most bizarre and haunting cases and until a few years very unkown

The best solution I think anyone can come up with why Gary Matthias was never found is this: (this is not my theory originally, but someone else’s). After he left Ted Weiher (probably dead) in the trailer, I suspect Matthias tried to cross a nearby frozen lake and fell through the ice. The only way to prove it is if his glasses are caught in some seaweed at the bottom of the lake. It’s been so long though, even that might be buried by now. Matthias could not have survived, he was heavily dependent on his medication, and would have shown up eventually. The fact that not even his bones were ever found makes me think he died somewhere the wolves or other wildlife wouldn’t find him.

Such a tragic case. This is a true mystery, which will never be solved, unfortunately. It's a very interesting case, but just sad. Thanks for explaining what could have happened, Dr. Grande. 🖤

I lived in that area - there is NO SNOW in Chico (NONE) if ever you might get a tiny flurry and it is gone within hours. That is maybe once in a lifetime. It is a straight stretch from Yuba City to Chico via Hwy 99 or 5 - to get off 99 or 5 and drive to where there is actual SNOW - anyone ANYONE would know they are lost the minute they saw snow and turn around and go back down the road. There is no scenario where they got lost on the road - none.

I do not for one second believe some kids driving around and they took a wrong turn and got lost......there is no possibility that happened. If you ever lived in that area back in that day and time you would understand - and I did live there back in that day and time.

This case and/or the Dyatlov Pass mystery would be great choices for the Podcast!

And there is a story of two hiker groups who were in the mountains when there was a sudden weather change where one group took a lower path and continued to move and the other comprised by girls decided to go up and wait in a cave (?). All of the girls but one passed away under mysterious circumstances, one girl was saved by the first group. It's believed they experienced a case of mass hysteria or something. Unfortunately I don't remember in what country it happened.

I love your comments about psychics and romance novels. And I can’t believe that someone who doesn’t know enough to run from a bedroom fire can get a driving license!

The mystery deepened when you described the condition of the trailer and Weir’s (sp?) condition. It could be he was trying to stay warm and wrapped himself in eight sheets to stay warm. It was determined he was alive for a long time due to the length of his beard. Do beards grow after death? Also, the gold watch was strange because it was not his watch. Very interesting case. I choose mystery novels over romance any day!

beards do grow after death keep in mind he froze to death so no beard growing. besides after death you do not grow 10 weeks beard i am sure the investigators took that after death beard growing into account

@@ursodermatt8809 Of course! The coroner would be able to pin down the time of death with the beard growth. There are so many fascinating ways coroners use to solve cases. I had never thought of hair growth. The mystery deepens. What was happening in the 10 weeks in the cabin?!

Would still love to see your input on chronic illness/pain and how it can change personality and impact emotional well-being. You have mentioned you deal with chronic issues, so I feel you would have an interesting point of view. I have a laundry list of issues... apparently when you have one autoimmune issue you begin to collect them like Pokémon.

I would also love this. My 9 year old's mysterious pain has not been diagnosed, despite my constant search for answers. I see his mental health slowly being effected by this. The family's mental health is also not immune to the ripple effects of his sufferings.

I think it could potentially be a good resource for those of us that deal with chronic issues, or have a loved one with them. To have someone explain why/what happens when a person deals with debilitating issues. I know I am not the same person I was before I got ill. It can be very hard to explain why I've changed in a way others can understand. Its always fun to be told "It can't be that bad" Or "You shouldn't let it change you" I understand it can be difficult to comprehend things that people don't have personal experience with, but it doesn't make that experience void. I just hope it could be another tool for people to utilize.

I think the one without his medicine might have convinced the men to run and the one who died in the cabin could have been told to stay there while he went for help. They might have thought that the food was being poisoned. My husband has this illness and thinking the food is poisoned comes up a lot. He is also paranoid and thinks there are people harassing him, this even though he is on meds.

I am so sorry. It is a helpless feeling loving somebody going through that. It can also be scary. Paranoia was the first symptom my grandma developed with Alzheimer's. Of course, I have since been told that she was probably misdiagnosed, but Alzheimer's is what the doctors came up with. For her it wasn't food, she thought people were living in the attic, talking to her from the chimney trying to make her crazy, shooting radiation at her. It was horrible. She half raised me, she was a rock up until then.

Mathias was not like the others. He had several criminal charges including attempted rpe on an unconscious girl. He once broke into a random couples house and said he needed the ring for Satan and claiming he owned their house and wanted the rent. He had only started hanging around the others a few months before the disappearance. They others were always together and knew each other for years. Mathias had several instances of traveling great distances and surviving. He once randomly disappeared and walked 540 miles to his grandparents house .. stealing dog food to survive. Although he was doing well, being off meds would not be great for this individual. One of these things is not like the others. You can read all these details and more in the Sacbee paper 2 part series titled "Out in the cold". RIP boys. A tragic story.

That's pretty interesting. I'm by no means an expert in this case, but it seems to me that Mathias probably had a lot of responsibility with what went wrong. With someone that potentially unstable, it's possible he did something like take the other boys there against their will. I've always kind of had a hunch that Mathias just had enough of society, and this was all basically his plan. The other boys probably would've been fairly easy to control and manipulate with fear and threats. It's a shame we'll probably never know.

Thank you, Dr Grande. In several ways, this story reminds me of one I've been hoping you would do. It's the Dyatlov Pass Incident in the Soviet Union, in 1959. A group of 9 people died in very strange circumstances. What caused it has still never been satisfactorily explained.

I don’t think that had psychological causes. Most likely something physical happened (explosions, avalanche, something) that caused them to run for their lives. It’s a great mystery, though! Would be interesting to hear his take.

@@Andreamom001 I agree with you. Rull Mourn, I too have been super interested in this case for years. For most of those years I was convinced something supernatural occurred, until I read the Dyatlov Pass book (I bet you read the same one. Came out "pretty recently" (last 5 years or so?) that had more natural explanations which made a lot more sense to me than supernatural causes. Such an intriguing case, for sure!

As someone who lives fairly close to Yuba City and growing up would hear about it from my mother (who was a teen at the time living around Brownsville), I appreciate this story! The man with the heart attack must've seen them though, if he identified the red truck that the other witness saw? I've heard of this case before, it's so odd.

I believe they were attacked by bad actors, and the first that come to mind are Chevy Chase and Nicolas Cage, as I believe they are two of the worst actors around.

The theory that they got lost always puzzles me, as McGruda was able to drive around Yuba pick up the rest of the gang, drive all the way to Chico drive to the college, then drive to to shop....these sound pretty intricate to me. However when the leave Chico they immediately take the first wrong turning. It could be the truth but i personally think we are missing something.

I think something must've got them down to Forbsetown, either willingly or unwillingly, and then something spooked them up the mountain. Up on the way up the hill, when the car got stuck, I believe they saw something that scared them - I personally believe it was something akin to a Moose. When it comes to those few months with Ted and Gary stuck up in the cabin, its important to remember, in my opinion, that Gary was the only one out of the boys who wasn't scared of the outdoors, especially unlike Ted who was terrified of the woods, the dark, fire, etc. After being expelled from the Army and having lived with his grandma in Portland, Oregon for some time, he hiked 550+ miles from Portland to Yuba County, California, and he did so barefoot and surviving off of wildlife and stolen human and pet food. I read somewhere that Gary loved nature, though I'm not sure where I read it, and I remember it particularly saying that it made his issues easier to manage. I believe that, after having kept Ted, dying from pneumonia and frostbite, alive for so long, when he finally died he wrapped him up in the blankets and he pulled a Chris McCandless - walking off into the wilderness, letting himself be consumed by nature.

Compassionate and insightful as always. Those poor lads.

It’s a bizarre story I have grown up with since I was born and raised there. So many theories and no answers for the families. Although something that confuses people who are not local to the area is that Yuba City, where Gary Mathias was born, is not in Yuba County. Yuba City is Sutter County and Marysville, which is across the bridge from Yuba City is actually Yuba County.

Again we dont know the truth, but Mathias once snapped and traveled on foot for two or so months to a relative's house while eating cat food off of porches. The odd thing is he was in the military for awhile and would have known how to turn on the heat, open the food, exc unlike the other men.

Evidence suggests he was the last one there to wrap Ted up, but the fact that nothing was utilized for survival is contradictory to this.

I've read quite a bit about this case, and I've always wondered if the gentleman who had the heart attack could possibly have hallucinated at least part of his experiences due to a combination of shock, hypoxia and/or severe pain...but I've literally never heard or read anyone else who brought up this possibility! I've always wondered if I was missing something, so it feels remarkably validating to hear someone else posit this hypothesis!

Very measured analysis, Dr. Grande, while not skirting around the issues. I appreciate you calling out so-called psychics for the charlatans that they are. It really needs to be said. No amount of placation towards their dangerous claims of supernatural abilities ought to be tolerated. We owe it to ourselves and the wider community to staunch these people's influence upon rational inquiry in order to maintain a sense of the natural order.

People fear what they don't understand So most would agree that it's best to keep our repressed emotions unobserved, in ones shadow( not good) "We don't need no hocus pocus" Here's a fact, if ones intuitive intellegence( psychic sense) is active and a Ted Bundy crosses your path, you'll recieve a strong feeling to move away quickly. If ones sixth sense ( psychic sense) is strong you won't get on the plane that soon will crash If your sixth sense is honed( psychic ability) you'll meet your Soul mate. This case, along with Bill Ewasko (missing hiker in Joshua Tree NP), is the most fascinating to me because it is genuinely head-scratching. None of the scenarios are truly satisfactory. Given that all 5 men had some degree of cognitive impairment, I find it somewhat plausible that they got hopelessly lost while driving and ended up on the mountain. The problem with that theory though is why did they abandon the car with the windows down and doors unlocked? I wonder if they got frightened when Schones called out and it made them scatter in a blind panic, thinking HE was a bad actor? Regarding Matthias having a sudden break with reality, the scenario that follows makes sense with that theory IF we can accept that he suddenly lost it during the drive home after being well-controlled with medication for two years. It seems a bit sudden to me. I also find the bad actors theories plausible (either mischief gone wrong or something more sinister) - in small, close-knit places like that people can close ranks and it would never get solved even if loads of people knew. Whatever happened though, I'm heartbroken for those men and their families. RIP all.

That's the channel I watched the other video about this event a couple of nights ago.

I learn much more from your presentations regarding actual personality disorders. I was wondering if 1 day you could present your analysis of individuals who are addicted to their cell phones. More specifically, after years and years of cellphone addiction, many people like my EX, only know how to form relationships via apps.

Am I the only one who feels that even though this outing turned tragic, that it was still cool that these guys got to go out and experience some freedom and adventure as adults!

I forgot about that. I remember reading that book though. I was probably way too young to be reading such a work. I remember finding it at a relative's house and I was bored. I also remember crying quiet a bit. It would also be interesting to get an analysis of the cop that survived and what he was forced to deal with in training others on what "not to do." Again, I was child when I read this, but I clearly remember the last section talking about what the department put him though.
