Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana REVIEW - Happy Console Gamer

Ys 8 review, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (イース VIII -Lacrimosa of DANA-) is a Japanese action role-playing game developed and published by the Nihon Falcom Corporation and the eighth installment in the Ys video game series. It was released in Japan in July 2016 for the Sony PlayStation Vita and for the PlayStation 4 on May 25, 2017.
On February 17, 2017, a worldwide release was announced for PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 4, and Microsoft Windows set for fall 2017; however, rather than being published by long-time partners Xseed Games, Ys VIII will be published by NIS America.

I was going to ask have you ever played memories of Celcetta? I enjoyed it more than the beginning of lacromosa of dana.. My favorite action RPG on handheld ever-

Nah man. The whole game was awesome. And even more than that, usually JRPGs tire me out by the 50+ hour mark. And I usually don't bother with postgame dungeons. But for this game? I didn't want to stop playing! I did everything. And still started up NG+ for a bit just to test Normal mode (beat it on Nightmare with true ending)

One thing that bugs me of the so called "Ys fans" seems to be missing is that the gameplay has always been changing, oath and origins use the ark engine, which was originally not looked up to well when they were released when fans of older ys games were used to the bump system (which only lasted in three games,ys 1,2 and 4). so why are people thinking falcom is ruining the series when the series always been changing?

  • @racerxgundam

Maybe the changes from Ys 1 to Origins were ones they liked or didn't mind? And they didn't care for the changes introduced in the latest 3? Or maybe there always were people who didn't like certain changes along the series. I remember people complaining about the side view introduced in Ys 3. People also complained about the slow battle system in Ys 5 as well as the more orchestral-styled soundtrack. Just because a series is always changing, doesn't mean people have to like all the changes. Also, once a series has been around long enough the fanbase will always fracture. Always.

i dont mean to continue the argument or be argumentative..but for what it was and in the context of the era it was released.... ys 1 and 2 on the tg16 makes everything inferior after it. Its the defining game for the turbo CD unit as far as i am concerned, and had the japanese IV come translated..would be the most loved y's game in the series IMHO. while i love the other ys games...i would not call any of them system defining.

I'm glad that, even when there are maps, Ys 8 is still quite a maze-like game. Do you remember Solomon's Shrine or the sewers in Ys 2? There were no maps at all but after all the hours/days/months/years you still managed to figure those places out. Map-systems usually make the exploration more shallow since you don't necessarily make your own mental-map or pay attention to the world.

My wife is also completely sold, she reads the novel while I play; a incredible experience I must say. So, I want to thank you, my friend. Wow, you played it back in the days on Sega Master System. I played it in 1987 on MSX2 in Japanese. Took a long time to finish because i coudn't understand anything they said. It was lots of talking to everyone more times and try out things overall. Ys1 was a blast, but then came Ys2 which was way better and more fun then 1 because of also using magic. I'm back tracking now. Just played Ys 1 and 2 again a few days back on PC. And now in English and i now know what exact the story is. Playing YS 6 now and almost finished. Then i go play Ys Origin. I'm gonna buy them all on PC and play it all again. I was the only one who finished Ys4 on the Snes ( since it is in Japanese ) of all of my friends. Last boss needed to throw neckless at him to hit him. I recall i had to throw both blue and gold neckless at him. Really fun game Ys titles. I really miss reall RPG games these days. Final Fantasy is not RPG to me anymore. It is a weird platform adventure game now. I've quited Ys because of Final Fantasy on the Snes. When Ys5 came, i had a Playstation1 and didn't look at Snes games anymore. I'm gonna play all the other Ys first then i start on 8 and 9. Ys 10 is coming next year.

Adding more and more to your base by recruiting people reminds me Suikoden. Oh, and Happy, you're talking about this game like it is Falcom's first 3D game entry. Why is that? Great vid!!

A thing about the graphics... they may not be insanely impressive, but the game is actually 60FPS pretty much constantly. It's honestly great and even more than that, surprising. There's still some indie 2D pixel games on the PS4 that struggle to reach 60fps. Huge props to Falcom for the framerate optimization.

I'd say the graphics are serviceable. If you play Dragon Quest 8 in HD it looks about as good as this. The geometry is very simple, but the textures are better than a PS2 game. I'd say this is pretty much on par with a budget PS3 game. Does that mean it's ugly? Not really. Personally I think it looks good, but to say it's "detailed" is going a bit far. Happy Console Gamer is comparing it to past games so I think it makes sense that he's impressed with the upgrade, but when compared with other RPGs this looks more like a Final Fantasy X or XII, Persona 4, or DQ8... well that may be a bit harsh actually because the textures here are definitley better and there is a lot more grass and other effects, but I am thinking more of the simple geometry of the landscape and enemies. I guess it looks like a Tales series game like Berseria, as a rival.

This game is phenomenal. I don't play RPG's nearly at all, but will definitely gravitate towards action RPG's. Everything about it was great, some things were a bit unusual, but that soundtrack is off the charts! I almost never had to grind and I played it on hard, grinding in any game just sucks all the enjoyment out it for me. This was my first Ys game which all I played are the PC versions. I tried 7 and the graphics are a bit too primitive for me to get into. Memories of Celceta was good, but the control scheme was way different and took some getting use to. I am onto Monstrum Nox now and I like it better than Celceta but not quite as well as this so far. Can't recommend it enough.

Two things worth mentioning... the Vita version has less content than the PS4 version, there is some significant content that's PS4 only. Second, the translation has some issues. I got a review copy too, and it's honestly depressing seeing how the translation stacks up compared to XSEED's work on the series.

I'm new to PS4, having mine for about 2 months now. But I feel like 75-80% of the games on it are more than doable on the PS3. Not that they aren't great games, but as I play them, games such as Nioh, I wonder if next gen just translates to fresh coat of paint.
