Ys is such an underrated series since it doesn't fall into the super high budget category with cutting edge graphics... but wow are they always fun to play. Don't judge the games by their comparatively weak visuals... they more than make up for that with incredibly satisfying combat and awesome music.

I've been curious about this game for a while. I was looking into the series and there was quite a few! Are they all connected some way or is each game more of a stand alone like final fantasy is?

It doesn't necessarily look that bad, the animation is a little stilted like when the wolf thingy was running but that might more be cuz of the distance it's travelling rather than the animation itself. Although the LOD did bother me

@Fusion I wouldn't count "Xenoblade 2" as an Action RPG, at least it's nothing like Ys. It's a normal RPG without the loading between battles and exploring and more action focused real time combat instead of turn based. But still, you just trading hits with your enemies (like in a normal RPG) and can't do anything to not get damaged.

o_ô Well, all three Xenoblade titles do have a real-time turn-based combat system, similar to a lot of western RPGs such as World of Warcraft or Dragon Age. Basic attacks occur in a certain time interval, contrary to Action RPG, where they are triggered by player input.

I've been playing Ys VIII pretty much non-stop since it's come out and i just have to say that it's the most fun i've had playing a video game in years. It's just so fun exploring the world, dashing around and fighting enemies. There is just so much verity as well so it hasn't gotten stale in the slightest. Definitely going to go back and check out the rest of this series. Id highly recommend checking out the demo if you haven't played it.

I'm in love with this game, it's just so FUN to play! 50+ hours in and I'm maybe only half way through. What I love about some jrpgs is there is just a simple happiness/joyfulness/playfulness that you never get from other games. I really don't mind that the cast would be seen as simple characters, sometimes that's just fine with me. Not every game needs a dark tone or super serious deep crap going on. I love the characters and I really REALLY love this game. It made me drop every other game I'd been playing this month and I don't see myself going back to any other game for a while. I love it!!

While characters may be archetypes, I really ended caring about them by the time the adventure was over. Review sadly doesn't mention how good Dana's portions of the game are. Only really big minus is translation, which is mediocre at best.

Every game can be played separately, the consistent thing is that Adol is the protag, and is a well known adventurer. The only Ys games that really tie together are Ys 1, 2, and Origins (prequel in the distant past that sets up the plot of 1 and 2). Beyond those games, you're really just missing out on references to characters and events from the other games.

None of the Ys games are connected in story, except for 1 & 2. Heck, a lot of them are totally different games in terms of gameplay and combat. In 1 & 2 you ram into your enemies, Oath, Origins & Napishtim are isometric action RPG games, 7, Celceta, 8 are like... well, see the review. If you don't like one game in the series you're bound to like one of the others.

Ys is an incredible game series but it's also criminally underrated and in my opinion it should be on par with the Zelda series or at least it tales of series

Israel González Not at all, there are quite a few references to previous games thrown into every Ys game, but every story is standalone, so you can pick up and play almost every single one of them easily. (The only exception being Ys II being a direct continuation of Ys I, and Ys Origin going heavily on the lore behind Ys I and II.)

And I'd like to disagree with you on the Story and Character parts. Yes, they may be based on regular clichés, BUT: The story Within the Ys universe, it is one of the more complex ones, featuring great dept by virtue of the interaction with our titular heroine, Dana (saying more would be spoiler), and while it does go down some predictable lanes, the way the Falcom scenario writers justified them, gives a proper sense of "completeness", meaning, they did not waste a single plot element. This is reinforced by the characters (I'll elaborate in a bit). By the time you get to the end of the game, and especially if you took the time to do the necessary amount of side stuff to get the True Ending (such an emotional one, of which this series has quite a few), you get the feeling that you KNOW the island and all the people that live(ed) there, making the moment our castaways finally leave the island (hardly a spoiler, for otherwise how would Adol be able to do all the other adventuring he does in later games, chronologically speaking) a sad, bittersweet one. The Characters Again, I disagree, for as Falcom has proven in the last decade, they may begin as clichés, but they develop so much more in the end, feeling like proper, real persons. Within the main characters, the haughty noble grows out of the pattern, the Fishy Fisherman has that adhesive personality that makes him like that goofy uncle that always brings a smile to you, the inconsistent courier... is an interesting guy... a large and spoiler-filled etcetera. As for the other NPCs, they offer more than just their share of personality in their interactions, they offer glimpses of the culture of the other nations that compose Adol's world, and have you wondering what would Adol encounter if/when he visits those places, what manner of mischief would follow him into them. Falcom's worldbuilding is one of the best of all time, going head to head with Atlus and Square Enix before they got too focused on sales (the other ones with amazing world building). The thing with them is: their way is more subtle, many of the things that give so much dept to their games are woven in such a seamless fashion, that you need several playthroughs to find them all and realize what a rich world and story they created. Maybe because most complex worldbuildings overwhelm (yes, even Atlus' Persona is overwhelming), gamers are not accustomed to Falcom's subtlety. Yet, as more an more of their games come out, we get to realize what an amazing job they've made, which easily stands on par with proper epic Fantasy the likes of a Lord of the Rings, when you look at the mythos both Ys and Legend of Heroes have assembled (and if anyone thinks that is not true, see you in the comments). To all of you who think the story and characters of this jewel of gaming are their weak points, I invite you to play the game again, and REALLY read with care. You'll be surprised what a treasure trove this Island Ys!

Persona 5 has got this, if anything can come close to Persona 5 is Nier automata and Nioh is the one other alternative, everything else is irrelevant, gladly DQ XI comes out next year out of Japan so P5 is almost JRPG GOTY, some sites even call it JRPG of the decade and genre defining, which I completely agree with, also best music in forever.

The only things I've played so far this year that I think are better than Ys VIII are Breath of the Wild and maybe Nioh. Nier is boring to me and Persona 5, while good, is way too heavy on the visual novel aspects for my tastes.

It runs at about 30 fps @ 540p versus the PS4/PC's 60 fps @ 1080p, and lacks a fair amount of content added to the PS4/PC versions that were created after it (more playable Dana, more story, etc...)

Vita version is 30 fps with some noticeable framerate drops in larger areas, plus more loading screens. It also lacks some content in the console verisons due to the limitations of the Vita.

Surprised this review doesn't mention all the translation errors in the text. Random letters that don't make sense, lines that are jumbled, lines that are still in their original Japanese characters... these happen frequent enough that it definitely should have been mentioned.
