PS: um’s defensive success has relied heavily on long sustained drives from the offense keeping the Defense fresh. That offense is going to struggle mightily having to replace the entire offensive line (literally all of them) and JJ who was the most effective 3rd down QB in the FBS last season. Miami has the best Edge Rusher in the nation in Ruben Bain paired with one of the SEC’s best pass rusher in Tyler Baron plus their other edges who started last season with Franciso Mauigoa in the middle & Mishael Powell at Safety (former Univ of Washington starter). How is not Miami projected to the a Top 5 Defense especially with their schedule??

Michigan had one of the easiest at first, then they had to play at Penn State, at Maryland, vs OSU, vs Iowa, vs Alabama, vs Washington. So that whole easiest thing went right out the window.

@GoatedAtNFS they weren't trash, but they weren't great. Iowa D was legit, but their offense was a joke. The Maryland game was a trap game, sandwiched between at PSU and home to OSU. Regardless of opponent, that was going to be a tough game. The only reason I bring them up though is because that's how the later part of their schedule went and I didn't want to cherry pick for context.

@BlackMountainCycles it's not a dumb argument if: 1) you have a disclaimer by saying the schedule was easy until the latter part of the year. 2) The team played the number 2 team in the country twice, the number 4 team, the number 10 team, and the number 17 team in the last 6 weeks of the season. Who had a harder schedule than that in the last 6 weeks? . . . I'll wait. 3) Look at the opponents Michigan played. How many teams beat Alabama? How many teams beat Ohio State? Iowa? Penn State? Washington? 4) Michigan had the hardest strength of schedule of the 4 unbeaten teams after week 12. 5) Michigan did not schedule an FCS opponent, unlike most powerhouse programs. 6) and my personal favorite, they beat every single team on their schedule, resulting in a National Championship. Oh, and just for an added bonus, only 7 different teams have won a NC since 2011, so it must be super easy. I mean last time I checked the top 2 teams had to play each other at the end of the year, correct?

You nailed with JT and consistency! HE Can be a beast at times but other times he disappears.

Because of their schedule, Iowa probably will have a top 4 defense according to statistics. But I can’t put them top 3. Mainly because the level of offense they’ll play in ‘24 won’t challenge them a lot. Ohio State is 1. UGA and Michigan are interchangeable to me at the moment.

um fans now: “We’re still going to be good!” um fans by week 7/8: “Of course we took a step back, look at everyone we lost! I don’t even care about this season. We’re reigning champs!”

Saying any big10 team is going to be top 10 just because big10 offenses were atrocious last year is basically malpractice

Love how everyone is underestimating and disrespecting michigan again. Sure, they lost a lot on offense so there's some questions there, but they're returning most of the key parts on defense. They might be even better than their top rated defense last year. They have the best Dline in the country with both interior lineman currently projected as 1st round picks, and the best CB in the country. They're still very strong at LB and addressed their biggest need with the spring portal by adding a ton of depth in the secondary. On paper and more importantly, in real life, they're the top defense again.

I'm a Buckeye fan. But most Big Ten Offense's are horrible. The Bucks defense last season was solid because we didn't give up many points until Michigan game, but we didn't cause hardly any turnovers all season. We should be loaded on Defense, but it's the Buckeyes.

A lot of defenses that were really good last season may not be as good this year. Let's take a look at UM's defense. They played a control style offense by running the ball and running the clock. This season, they will not have the offense to play that style and the defense will be exposed a lot more. Iowa?? they will no longer have the benefit of playing against the weak B1G west. UM had no problem controlling the Iowa defense last December.

@@whatlol_e I think Oregon could easily end up in the top 5 total defense at the end of the season. It all depends on how the new depth/role players pan out. Muhammad is a great perimeter pickup, Caldwell a solid depth transfer, but alot of Oregon's defensive potential is based on the great high school class they just recruited. I personally weigh the "on paper" quality of high school recruits and group of 5 transfers heavily so that's the only reason they aren't on the list for me. If I were predicting teams that end up top defenses by the end of the year they would be on it.
