Funny, even the moment of "authenticity" at the end is of course him asking whether he stepped on the toes of the other actor that didn't exist because it was also him. A reminder that even the part that's "not acting" is still acting because of how many layers of artifice exist in content creation or any performance. And yet, the performance remains true despite or perhaps because of said artifice.

A lie is a falsehood told with the intent to deceive. There are other kinds of falsehoods, like sarcasm or simply being wrong, for example. Acting, writing, and other forms of art are a falsehood used to convey a message about a truth. Neither the artist nor the audience believes that what they are experiencing is literal reality, but rather an metaphorical experience that conveys a deeper meaning; by definition, not a lie. As an aside, I absolutely despised the characters of the detectives. They remind me of my own ideal self (or selves) - the 'rational' one beating you up with the loaded questions and the abusive 'emotional' one doing its best to grind you into the floor. Neither caring about the actual truth; both only striving to shame and punish you. Its not often that I want to punch a fictional character in the face. You did an amazing job writing and acting them.

Not only because Olly states the name of the play quite explicitly, but also because it may be too much of stretch if one wishes to interpret it like that. The random appearance of authority without any explicit reason (i.e. the charge) did give the impression that it could be related to Kafka's novel... I’m a high school teacher and much of what’s explored in terms of parasocial relations resonates. An educator in a student-teacher relation has to leverage a performative (often sunnier) version of themselves; in part because it’s an effective way to engage with and gain investment from our children, but also because we’re limited by the professional boundaries that dictate what’s an appropriate thought, affect, or mode of expression to reveal in front of a younger audience. In that vein, I see my existence vis-a-vis my children as a curated symbol-one that reflects my emotional truth but guided by a selective process of manufactured authenticity. I feel as a teacher (or any public role) it’s important to model the best version of ourselves, even if that means being selective and strategic with how we emote, engage with others, and self-express. Our constant performance can make us feel disingenuous and manipulative at times, but your video reminded me that it’s OK-so long as we stay grounded in our emotional truth ❤️

I thought about teaching too! I agree with what you've said. As a TEFL teacher, I even moderate the language I use so that it can be more easily understood by my kids, even if it's not completely "accurate" to what I want to "authentically" say. I definitely have a "teacher persona" that's a little bit more happy than my typical non-workplace self. I can even recall specific lies I've told my kids. For example, if an 8 year old pre-intermediate English learner asks me what my favorite movie is, it would be confusing for me to answer with a movie they've never heard of (and for me to have to explain the plot and the actors they've never heard of - I usually pick a Disney movie from the past 4-5 years to answer that question.) Teaching is absolutely a performance, but I would be completely drained and tired out if I didn't bring myself to that performance. (Also, kids are sharp- they can feel when things are fake with you.)

nd4spd That makes me wonder if/when I overdo it. It also raises an interesting question on how/why we find certain performances of authenticity grating while not others. For example, do you find Ollie’s “inauthenticity” as a KZreadr annoying? (I feel personalities like Shane Dawson or MatPat can enter cringe territory with their performance sometimes.) Or does the question not apply because our relationship to him is more parasocial than an in-person teacher-student one?

It's interesting to me, that I hadn't realised I was thinking about this, but even though I adored the cosmonaut video, I was aware of and thought about the fact that it probably took multiple takes, there was probably a script, but that doesn't really take away from it. I mean, you can't get more rehearsed and scripted than a song, but songs are some of the best ways to describe and get across a truth, emotional or otherwise, and it doesn't matter how many times the band has played it.

The way he's so frustrated with the detectives don't look like guilt, he's ANGRY that they are stripping away the message to focus on the medium. Focusing on the medium as a means to detract from the message is incredibly frustrating, and I'm sure that gets under the skin of a lot of artists.

Watching this, I'm reminded of this quote by Alan Moore: "in my work as an author, I traffic in fiction, I do not traffic in lies, although I'll admit that the distinction is a nice one, and perhaps not easy for the layman to make. With fiction, with art, with writing, it's important that even if you're dealing with areas of complete outrageous fantasy that there is an emotional resonance. It is important that a story ring true upon a human level even if it never happened."

I was fairly new to the channel, I actually wondered if the glassy, teary, tired eyes were just how he looked all the time. But watching other videos showed me that was not the case, so I had come to that conclusion before watching this video. Suspicions vindicated!

It doesn't feel as if it gets enough mentions, but seriously, great cinematography in this one! The use of values are on point! Flat black/white for the interrogator stuck between binaries (truth/lies, right/wrong), and mid-range shades of grey for the nuanced author avatar. The two inspectors at first forming a yin-yang of contrasts (mostly white on black backgroung/ mostly black on white background) until they switch and rub against the previous harmony. Once drenched in their own elements, the wild and jagged leather broadcast the more personal, aggressive tone, while the stoic becomes almost uncharacteristically smug and condescending. I found it especially interesting to interpret the characters as an Id, Superego and Ego trio. Eyes concealed (ruled by instinct and passion), one covered (narrowminded, strict absolutes) and two eyes wide open (complete - empathetic yet fallible)

  • @RaunienTheFirst

    @RaunienTheFirst

That's... really insightful actually. Quick question, can the Id, Superego and Ego be related to Thesis, Antithesis and Synthesis? Id, Thesis (base urges, instincts), negation of Thesis to Superego, Antithesis (absolute ideas, strict regulation), then the negation of the negation to the Ego, Synthesis (the complete person, who can relate to others, form ideas and change them). And then, could this be an imagining of the stages of society as imagined by Marx? Id, Thesis, primitive man (animalistic, dominated by base urges) negated to Antithesis, Superego, class society (strict hierarchical relationships, codified and enforced laws and deeply held beliefs and traditions) negated to Synthesis, Ego, Communism. Or have I been reading too much Žižek? Shniff.

@@RaunienTheFirst Dunno, maybe? I will admit I haven't read any marxist literature, but the Theses can definitely represent those stages of societies if seen through Kuhn's Paradigms (though Kuhn himself was fiercely against it). I'm not sure if the they can be mapped out over a human's psyche however, since there's a distintly temporal aspect to the societal analysis (society changes from one standard to another), whereas a human will never be ruled entirely by any one part of their psyche. It will always be an amalgamtion of all of them.

@@bygon432 I'm just throwing ideas at a metaphorical wall and seeing if any stick, I don't really know what I'm talking about. That's a good point though. But couldn't one say that at various stages of human societal development, different parts of the psyche are allowed to flourish? I don't really believe in any rationalisable human "progress" it's all just random people doing stuff and we apply this notion of progress to make ourselves feel better about where we are and where we might be going. But it's fun to speculate.

This is super interesting. It was around the 20-minute mark that I realised all this talk of para-social relationships can be applied to all kinds of fields and relationships, not just art and the internet. I'm a social worker and I end up asking myself about authenticity at work. I get to work with people long-term, and so we do end up getting to know each other and forming a relationship (although, I know a lot more about my clients than they do about me... just one of the things that contributes to the power dynamics that we have to be aware of). I wouldn't be able to sustain the work that I do without being bringing my authentic self to work, and yet I make conscious decisions about what I say and what I share. Naturally, we can present different facets of ourself to different people in different settings, and I like to think they could all be authentic.

The topic of authenticity is pretty interesting to me, not even related to art or social media, but as a disabled person. Especially emotional authenticity. Because of my conditions I (not uncommonly) slip into a sort of fatigue apathy (something I recently found out I'm not alone in). I have to make decisions and act based on what I know I like, and who I know I am, but it's fundamentally a performance of my (emotional) self. I might be really disinterested in seeing my favourite musician, or even dislike the idea because it'll take energy - but I say I look forward to it and buy the ticket anyway, because I know that's what I like. In some ways (according to Strucci and Ellis) that could be more inauthentic than professional performance, because people have no reason to even think I'm acting. I've also had a period where I was depending on fake energy so much to get through my days, and to deal with pain, that I felt like a different person. I made choices that I wouldn't have made, and didn't care about things that I would care about. What is it to be authentically yourself, and how can we know, if that can fluctuate? Is authenticity expressing who you are in one moment, or who you choose to be in that moment? There's also the question of if we are truly emotionally authentic with anyone by such standards. It seems to me that all relationships are based on selective withholding and offering of our truths. People also often rehearse the most emotional truths they tell someone, or edit any written communications too - I know I've done both. Side note: brilliant video, must've taken a lot of work, and it was really engaging and well acted. I also hope you make that song available at some point, because it would fit in lovely with my playlist of 5 other songs that share a specific feel I can't yet define.

As we edit our communications we also change our own way of thinking... at least I do. It's also about organizing your perspective and understanding yourself. I don't think contextualizing is the same as being inauthentic.

    M. Ruby I'd definitely agree with that, but I reckon it could also apply to scripting/rehearsing/doing takes. I guess my feeling is that the concept of authenticity is one that is pretty hard to usefully define, and similarly hard to universally apply. I'm definitely struggling to come up with a definition without possible exceptions.

You’re really a double threat as an actor, Olly. I mean, I haven’t actually seen you act in theatre, and I am assuming you’re rather good there too. But I also know that theatre acting and camera acting are two very different things, and not all actors can do both. But you do, and I know for a fact that you’re a superb camera actor. Excellent job, my parasocial friend!

10:36 "This section of the video here where you talk about some of the *really* personal things: how many takes of that section did you do?" That moment fucked me up so bad the first time I saw it. It really sunk in to me how much everything in youtube media is curated, no matter how "authentic" or true it is.

Wow. This was so amazing for me to watch! As a KZreadr who's been making commentary videos for almost 10 years, I've always had a very close connection with my audience. I talk about a lot of my personal feelings, thoughts, ideas, philosophies, emotions, etc. I've been doing this since I was 16 and have thought a lot about the process and it's cool to watch a video that resonated with so many of the things I've had to go through. Things like recognizing the types of relationships I have with people who watch my content, the version of yourself you present to the world compared to who you are when you aren't recording, and the idea of whether I'm a content creator or a social media influencer. I love how you suggested you don't like to call yourself an influencer, when in reality, you probably have a much larger influence on your audience than a lot of other youtubers have with theirs. A lot of the time, I think the people calling themselves influencers so boldly are the ones who probably have the least. On top of that, all the symbolism and tiny jokes you fit into this video really inspired me. You've shown me a new level of detail that can be added to a KZread video that can make it that much more appreciable. Thanks for creating this video, it really hit home with me. ❤

The video was amazing! It really provided a sense of tension with the interrogation scenario, and it all reminded me of debates I have with myself when I try to figure things out about what I think. Sometimes it is a struggle to explain an answer you know you have to an accusation, even to yourself. I don't have much to say about the actual topic of the video- you were pretty on point- but I am just really impressed with the way the scenario presented conveys the feelings of actually contemplating these questions. Enlightening as always, love your videos! :>

Oliver....i am so sad. Its so sad to know that someone perfectly recreate on film what i go through dozens of times a day. It hurts to know you feel this way. I thought i had felt understood from the cosmonaught video, but this is another level. Im sobbing right now. Keep up the fight Olly. Thats what im doing right now too.

This is one of your best yet. So far, the Cosmonaut one affected me the most deeply (see my comments under that one to understand why). I don't care how many takes you had to do to make it; what came through was Truth, and spoke to my spirit. I have noticed that your recent videos are much more involved productions than what you were doing before, and they're great. If you need a month to make them, that's fine. Take as long as you need to make the videos you want to make, while still taking care of yourself. But if you could slip in one or two of the "just you and the camera" type in between, I'd really appreciate it. Gotta have my Olly fix! :-)
