R-value can be misleading! Let's say you install 4 inches of rigid Rockwool on the outside of your R-21 wall assembly. That would be a nominal R-value of R-39, almost R-40... But, as an effective R-value, it's substantially less. Why? We don't have Insulation at the location of the studs and framing components, we just have solid wood. Wood is about R-1 per inch, so at the location of the framing components, our wall assembly is closer to R-21.5!

Keep up the info on thermal breaks. With all of the AC efficiency changes we are forced to comply to, humidity and condensation issues are going to get tough to solve. Batting insulation is changing in it's primary role and an exterior thermal break is going to be needed more and more. Thanks for the graphics and explanation. Look forward to each vid....
