Its so nice to see someone else who found it hard to make friends in UCD! I'm an Irish student and I go home at weekends just because nothing is going on at weekends in UCD. I'm now a 2nd year in a three year degree programme and I found my home in a society, but without that I would have dropped out at the end of first semester, and it is still the only thing keeping me there! I'm over halfway through my degree now but it is still a bit of a struggle socially.

Ireland is consistently ranked within the top 10 education systems in the world and the top 10 most educated countries. It has its faults but also its advantages. Continuous assessment exists but all depends on your course and university.

It's interesting what you said about UCD being a commuter college. I'm an international student myself who is a first year at Trinity College Dublin and in my halls I've found that there's a huge variety of people to meet, especially if you end up in Trinity Hall where there's 800 students, of which 60/70% are Irish and the rest international

Someone who's spent (and is still spending) far too much time in UCD here! Assessment varies between modules and between schools, Maths generally had 20-30% midterms and 70-80% final exams, Irish varied between 50% midterm essay and 50% final exam/essay to something like 40% final exam, 40% homework assignments and 20% attendance & oral exam. As someone who doesn't do well in exams, it sucks, but because of the Irish education system, continuous assessment was also a huge challenge seeing as how my last 3 years in secondary school were leading up one exam which in most cases counts for 100% of your grade in that subject (you could be an A student for two years and blank on a section worth 1/4 of the overall marks on the day and go to a C). Of course, I'm limited to knowledge of my own experience and the general experience of my friends, so this doesn't hold for every Irish student.

I went to NCAD difference is I knew exactly what I wanted to do and where I wanted to end up at the end of my degree and I was Irish which meant I got to travel home every weekend even tho it was a 4 hour commute, I still think Dublin is an amazing place to study even for foreign students so good luck Becca 😘

Great to hear your perspective on being an international student at UCD. I'm an Australian studying at a UK university's campus in China and seriously considering going to either UCD or TCD for my MSc...Totally agree with you about the 100% weighted exams, they have that in UK universities too and its a real pain in the ass hahaha; you get used to it pretty quickly though.

Look into the sports clubs for meeting people! Non-competitive societies like mountaineering and surf do weekends away where you really get to know people, both Irish and international, that's how I made my friends! Refreshers day is on the 31st of January in Astra Hall, thats when you can sign up to clubs again :)

Thanks for the info. I'm glad I watched this because I previously thought only a few schools use one-assessment grading. I studied at University of Roehampton in London for a semester where they do that and it was a bit difficult to handle. I am considering studying abroad at UCD for fall 2019 and I needed some insight first. Thanks again.

Continuous assessment differs from course and college. Some courses have entirely continuous assessment style learning, some have none. It really depends on where you go. But yes, most places still have exams of some sort, and you'll more than likely have to take at least one exam the whole time you are in third level education, probably because it's still seen as THE way to learn globally, and we still have to move forward to new styles of learning, which our country does not really have the funds to experiment with.

The guards don't have to carry guns because Ireland is a neutral country and no one can bomb us and there really isn't much threat to us. Also guards r very well trained in self defense and handling people who have weapons with there bare hands. So your gonna feel safe and a since of freedom like you don't have to be always looking over your shoulder.

What about other international students in Dublin, have you met any? I know Dublin is a great center for exchange program students and immigrants, and that there are people from all around the world studying English and working there. I'm planning on going to Ireland this year after graduating from college to study MORE English, and I get super excited watching your videos, omg, I hope it works outttt. I personally think that living off campus is going to be better for you to make new friends or to get to meet new people, even though it might not be people from the University. But who cares, enjoy the experience.

Hi! Thank you so much for this video, I really appreciate the time you put into it. I already got an acceptance to UCD last month, and my parents and I are pretty serious about me attending this university this fall (although my first choice is a US university). It would be so cool if we meet at UCD! Yeah I agree with you, the US tests and assignments system of continuous assessments is far better. I was wondering if you need to learn the Irish language to get around Dublin, or maybe for job opportunities (as I noticed you study the Irish language using flashcards in your dorm tour video).

Vishuka Mathur I'm from Ireland and nope you don't need to know the Irish language to get around Dublin, no one speaks it, it's mainly just a subject in school that we've been learning since like age 4 and none of can still even fluently speak it😂😂. Only the Gaeltacht areas such as Mayo speak Irish but they're also fluent in English. For job opportunities as far as I know primary School teaching requires Irish for a requirement. But Everything else doesn't require it as no one really speaks it here in Dublin. ☺️

You should share an apartment in Dublin City. It will be a great way to meet new people and a cheaper way to rent.

"America knows they're doing with their schooling" Are you sure about that? Also Ireland has always been shit in the education department, the secondary school system is shit. Also continuous assessment varies greatly from courses to course and from college to college.

Initially, I attended a commuter university, and I have to agree with you about the squads and cliques. Those types of colleges can be a bit cold sometimes.
