Your Toyota Engine Shuts Off On Turns? This is a HUGE RED FLAG!

A Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician explains if your Toyota engine shuts off on turns you need to stop immediately and check the engine oil level!
Engine oil burning is an issue with extended oil change intervals. And even normal oil consumption can run your engine critically low on oil as you get closer to your oil change interval.
Checking your engine oil level periodically is very important folks! Make sure you check every few weeks. Takes 2 minutes could save you catastrophic engine damage.

Yup! Had the transmission fluid and oil changed out on a truck I owned about 15 years ago. I drove about 80 miles back home and opened the hood after it was parked for about 4 hours. The Transmission dip stick hadn't been put all the way back into the "tube". One of the big 3 Dealerships. I also check the tire pressures after a tire change and a couple times one to three of the tires has been inflated to 42 to 46 psi ( 35 psi recommended ) as well I take a picture of the rims with my phone camera as twice I've noticed that the rims had been gouged.

From my experience, working at a quick lube place, it does largely depend on what store you go to. Your experience can also vary largely even going to different stores within the same company, which in and of itself is a problem. My store is significantly busier compared to many of the stores within the franchise I work in, so there’s practically 0 room for the stupid shit that you’ll see on the news and on KZread. Mistakes obviously happen, but it’s not like we’re intentionally trying to rip off customers. As far as the slower stores in the franchise I work in go, good luck. While a lot of the stuff you said does actually happen, and it’s significantly more prevalent in quick lube shops than independent places and dealerships, it varies largely on what store you to go. I wouldn’t bother with any of them regardless. Virtually all of them are staffed by underpaid and overworked employees that care more about moving cars out than actually making sure they did their job right

A lot of your subscribers aren't as good at placing themselves in the shoes of someone whose strengths and weaknesses are different from their own. But the subscribers who think they're superior/perfect, also make mistakes in areas they don't understand. Maybe a tax accountant would find severe flaws in their retirement planning, a real estate agent would know they made a horrible choice of where to live, a fashionista would know they'd been ripped off with counterfeit clothing, and a board of health inspector would know they'd been raving about a restaurant with rats in the kitchen. It's great to not run your car low on oil, etc. It's not great to think it means you're smarter than someone who does. I swap my tires spring and fall and rotate them. I remember my wife told me that her tires on her RAV 4 are wearing so evenly because I rotate them about every 10 000 kms. This is what the service advisor told her at the dealer. I cannot understand how people don't check their oil and other fluids. I my opinion, this Sienna has an engine with serious internal damage. These cars were famous for very bad oil consumption. But never a problem with anything with this car. I sold it for a very good price in near new condition. Yes AMD, take care of your car! My Prius has 106k miles & doesn’t have that problem. Supposedly Toyota fixed that problem by 2014. @@joeshmoe8952 Fred Read mostly nails it, but the specifics are that Toyota went a little too far with lowering the spring tension of the rings to improve fuel economy when they updated the engine for the new gen 3 Prius. This made them highly susceptible to sludge buildup from poor oil or extended service intervals. As long as the rings stay clean, there's no problem. After a few years, Toyota realized the issue and used slightly stiffer rings for the rest of the gen 3 run. So the 2010, 2011, and 2012(?) Priuses don't have a different problem than other Priuses or Toyotas, it's just that it happens to them easier than the others. I've owned a 2010 with 83k miles since basically new(it had ~1200 miles). I had been doing 10k mile(or worse) dealership changes until I found this channel at 75k. I hadn't started burning oil yet, so I got a little proactive and had the dealership do the big 12 year/120k service plus some extra things like running an oil detergent through to make sure the rings were clean, and also do the TSBs related to the intake manifold and EGR system(including an ECM update). It cost me a little bit extra versus having done the proper oil changes in the first place, but now I know the engine is good for at least another 200k miles. I also had a collection of dents, dings, and cracks taken out at a body shop, and did a few mild upgrades of my own(fog lights, rear camera, modern radio, auto-dimming rear view mirror, full LED upgrade with quality bulbs). Finished it off with a ChrisFix-style interior detailing, and now I have a near-perfect low milage 2010.

I assume you mean 303000 miles? Because here in Canada, 303000 kilometres is nothing to brag about for a Corolla, it would be able to go much further. 303K miles is 487,000 kilometres. There is one for sale with 736,000 kilometres a couple hours away from where I live. Bulletproof cars

A neighbor borrowed my truck and I switched and used her lovely old 2004 Avalon (that I helped her buy a couple of years ago). When I drove it the first thing that I noticed was that it steered like a Mac truck. Stopped the car, opened the driver door and turned the wheel. Left, then Right. Wherrrrrrr wherrrrrrrr oh no, sure enough very very low power steering fluid. And while Im here how is the coolant? Oh, the overflow reservoir is empty. As AMD says, “folks you have to check these things”. Toyotas are great cars BUT, you still have to maintain them.

Funny how folks with a $1200 phone will do all updates, learn its features, buy a case, etc... Crazy how folks with a $600 a month car payment for 72 months will roll with bad tires, and not even bother themselves to take 10 seconds to check the oil... I’ve known two cases of engines being run low on oil: my office mate ran his 1992/3 Saturn low on oil when the car was just a few years old, causing the top end to clatter, according to what he said; and then my upstairs neighbor rolled up beneath my deck at the carports, and he was wondering why his engine was clattering - I pulled the stick, hmm 🤔 no oil, so I gave him a quart I had in my closet - he had to have that engine replaced not too long after. As AMD says, it does not take long to check your oil. On all our active vehicles, my schedule is to check the oil and tire pressures and give everything a look over once a week. Stuff happens, and you want to catch it before it bites you…

I asked him “How much oil did you use?” He answered, “Oh, a half case. That’s all.” The car burned through oil so badly that he had to throw it into gear to make the motor stall for it kept on chugging away on it oil!

I’ve used Honda, GM, and Ford dealers in the past. I’ve found Toyota dealers to be the best. I purchase Toyota care and save a little money and I know the engine is getting the right oil. It also includes tire rotation and road side assistance which is not likely to be used with a well cared for Toyota. I travel around the country so if I’m not home I know I’ll get consistent service. I’ve caught oil change places trying to put the wrong oil in my vehicle. I had a Ford Econoline that called for 5w 20 synthetic blend oil and the oil change place tried to put straight 30wt oil in the engine. I made them change it and put the proper oil in the engine before I would pay them and leave. They tried to tell me that oil was fine for the engine. I and the owners manual didn’t agree. If it’s a place you haven’t dealt with before you have to watch what these people do and ask questions. Don’t assume they’re doing the right thing or even know what they’re doing!

We had a 2002 Sienna V6 that did this plus blue smoke at times. The oil would just disappear! This was a car that never burned oil. It turned out to be the baffle on the rear valve cover that was clogged up. The rear valve cover had the PCV valve. Replacing the rear PCV valve with a Toyota part would only help for a short time. After much research, I figured out the rear valve cover was redesigned, I bought the new version, replaced it and life was good again. That's when I also found out a shop that had replaced spark plugs never replaced the rear plugs (Iridium). They used NGK G-power plugs in the front and they were all worn out. Looked at the receipt and they charged me for 6 plugs but only replaced the front 3 plugs and they were the wrong ones. :(

Regarding oil changes. What really botherd me was your recent revelation that all car dealers service departments use the cheapest oil they can find. I reasonably believed based on the how much the Dealers charge per quart of oil (always $1 or more per quart then Synthetic Pennzoil at Walmart) that one could assumed that all Toyota Dealers used only Toyota sysnthetic and Toyota oil, filters cartridges and parts. So the only alternative is to go to a Toyota Dealer's parts department and buy 5 quarts of Toyota synthetic and Toyota oil filter cartridge , then go to a good reputation independent shop and watch them rotate the tires, drain and change the oil using the oil/filter cartridge you brought with you. And then check the oil level with a warm engine plus verify via the dip stick that that they did not overfill it. ==> 2017 Toyota Camry Hybrid. in Southern Calif.

@H.Hemphill I plan to keep my 2006 Matrix for decades & another 600,000 kilometres. Definitely doable. I know how to maintain my cars. Even when it’s too old to be a daily driver 30,000 km a year (like 40 yrs old) it’ll be my cool weekend car/project. It’s got 244,000 km as of right now

@@Blakecryderman7244 Yeah, ‘97 Merc C-class lasted to 2020. It had two teenagers learn to drive on it. 😂 Was just a backup car finally, like my 13 year old Camry is now.

my current car from 2008 tells me the oil level every time I start the engine. If the oil needs changing it alerts me and so on... But my Lancia from 1996 did the same thing. So it is incredible that you need to check the oil with a dip stick in a modern Toyota. My opinion on oil consumption is very simple. If you use a good oil and change oil every 15000 km (or 10000 miles) I will accept that the oil level drops from max to min. Adding a liter (or a quart) every 1000 miles means that I'm spending 10 additional liters between changes, which is a lot! I would not by a car that wastes so much oil.

I don’t trust electronic sensors, they can fall out of calibration or fail. I will take the dipstick all day everyday! The master mechanic that runs this channel says change your oil every 5k miles.....10k miles is too long to go.....

This is because people followed the guidelines for highway driving. The oil should be changed every 4000-6000. Checked monthly at least. Keep buying those high tech baubles

I had a VW with gasket leak in College, checked and toped off every week. During finals I was preoccupied and forgot. Post finals I checked and like this car the dip stick was clean. I freaked the oil filler cap was white as was what I could into engine. I was only 2.75 quarts low out of less than 4 qt capacity. I had forgotten this experience drive that Scirocco 4 years after graduation. But I never forgot to check oil and replaced valve cover gasket. Don’t be like Bob I thought a light would come on and get brighter when I needed OIL.

If the vvt gears are starved of oil the aluminum heads cam guides are too meaning they are galled so it needs a long block. Pull the 02 sensors and inspect the cat using a scope...joker will be ashed up if its burning oil, likely even clogged. These 19.99-29.99 oil change deals are killing new cars that require newer high efficiency ultra low soot oil standards. Gm has been plagued for years, newer turbo and turbo diesels are facing issues too.

Hello AMD love watching your Channel. I own a 2007 sienna le with the 2GRFE. I just did the oil change myself with 6.4 quarts oil. Why does my dipstick show really low oil level as in still Needing two more quarts. I have it parked on level ground And have let sit for for hours Yet still shows oil only at the tip of the dipstick. Thank you sir have a blessed day. 🙏

I am guilty of not checking my oil enough. Every time I check it, it is full so typically every 2 or 3 months it gets checked. It gets changed at least once a year regardless of mileage. Now if I see that it is down, I then will check it in every week, no change, then every two weeks.
