I hate how hard it is to figure out if what you're consuming sometimes is an ad or not. I remember reading somewhere a while ago that it's getting so bad that "help" sites like reddit or quora were getting way more searches on google as a way to get honest reviews/answers from other consumers vs something like actual review sites since those are often filled with fakes reviews or bots. Now I can't help but wonder sometimes when or if they already are having planted "reviews" on those sites too. I feel like I can't trust anything anymore lol

Then she rubbed it in, and IMMEDIATELY said "omg I can tell! My hair looks more full!" And went on and on about how great the serum is. The same serum that was still wet on her scalp😂

One rule I have for myself now is if I see something i automatically want to buy off Instagram or TikTok I have to give 3 reasons why I don’t need that item and think about at least 1 alternative I already have that I can use. I often say on my channel, if you shop using a credit card and you have an interest rate on that card and you don't pay off the card every month ... you're not getting that 10-15-20% percent off.

  • @mikaiahl6635

One thing about credit cards though - the rewards can be worth it, if AND ONLY IF you pay off your balance on time, every single month. If you pay it off on time, you won't get charged with interest. I'm pretty sure all of my credit cards have 25-30% APRs, but I've never been charged a single cent of interest because I'm responsible enough to pay it off every month.

Yes! Because of all the travelling my husband did for work those points paid for 4-5 round trips for 3 people back home to South America and a bunch of free hotel stays. The annual fee for the American Express platinum was well worth it just for that alone but the extra bonus was the airport lounges. He changed careers, so no more travel or platinum card, and with the increased costs we no longer have the luxury to travel anyways. One of the most important things my husband taught me was not to spend money we don’t have!! His credit card is paid off every month (unless unexpected emergency) For myself, I use a prepaid credit card. I put a certain amount monthly to cover payments and then add money before going shopping (to get the cash back rewards debit purchases don’t have)

If the ad was listed at the bottom of the description, according to the FTC it still counts as a disclosed ad. People just don’t want influencers to advertise at all, which the whole point of being an influencer is to influence. What I can’t stand is when they don’t disclose being paid and will tag the brand or tag that they are a brand ambassador, that’s not being transparent enough.

The FTC says the proper way of disclosing, is to verbally say it in the video, and for it to be in the first line of the description, so you dont have to click "read more" to see it. So no, her putting it at the bottom, does not qualify as disclosure for the FTC.

These dynamics of “Reviewer” vs. “Salesperson” remind me of the ongoing situation with top tech reviewer MKBHD. His reputation as an Honest Reviewer is renowned… and yet, these days that very fact seems to be landing him in headlines… I’ve often wondered why, and this video makes me realize it’s probably because his word is so deeply trusted by consumers (and his platform so large) that it’s not really possible to control his marketing impact. He’s a Reviewer in a Salesperson world! 😊 So fascinating how these consumer frameworks appear and evolve before we even recognize what’s going on.

Nick Lewis did a great video on deinfluencing and talked about the influencer trap. It's really stuck with me, the idea that you can't outpurchase or even match an influencer. They make money whenever they get new things, even if they spend some money to make it later. You only lose money because there goes your money. If you can afford to lose that money, fine. But let's be honest, most of us can't. I'm very into the deinfluencing idea.

Honestly, I wanted to buy so many cream blushes but, I simply use my soft matte lip creams to use as blushes instead of buying a blush. My sister bought a sheGlam blush because of a recommendation and the packaging is all gunged up and not usable. Esp how not long lasting the product really is. No one said that, that's when I understood the looks so good trap. I usually watch empties to determine a full review.

I grow slower for many reasons - I don't want to be a spokesperson for a company - my conscience is clear. I don't have a lot of companies reaching out to me, and I'm okay with that. Now, let me keep watching your video!😊

I do YT premium, which I loooove but for very specific reasons, and this still affects me. I cut out luxury influencers & those who hop on new drops too often, and my desire to buy is waning. I’m finding myself more and more satisfied with what I have, and less desirous of higher end products, esp when even dollar tree quality is so good lately. I’m starting to think of makeup purchasing as a twice/year kind of shopping, other than replacing my complexion products w/ spf as needed. I did have to say goodbye to some creators I like but who are infomercialists, and the social media economy is pretty corrupt, I don’t feel any obligation to keep it going, but I do really appreciate channels like this & Jessica the dollar diva

i worked in beauty marketing in 2015-2019 and i would actually say those days were more sneaky because we didn't have to mention or declare when things were paid or collab on ig. i worked for one of the biggest names and we had very fat checks given to famous people saying how much they loved our products, people commenting like yasss to their 'secret' products or routines not knowing they never used our products before probably a day in their life. but i definitely think it's more hyper-advertising in your face these days. our social media feeds are basically now one big advert unless you follow no one but your friends and try to avoid reccomended posts, for you and explore pages with your whole dear life.

I buy far less now than I did pre-lockdown. I also am not a fan of short content. If I am interested in a specific product, I see if those I have watched for years have reviewed it, which may be you, MrKongsMom, Hot & Flashy, Tati, Stephanie Marie, etc. My short-form content watching is very minimal, and I will never purchase something based on a few seconds of video.

It reminds me about like what happened when TV really took off. You had a bunch of manufacturers creating advertisement disguised as education so you were being educated on Dupont and its products. You were being educated on the new advances in kitchenware and appliances. You're being educated on the functionality of Ford's new engine At that time people did not realize that they weren't just being told about the ins and outs. They were being sold products and for some reason the same thing applies. Now when it comes to influencers people do not realize that influencers are just salespeople. They are either selling themselves to create that 15 minutes of fame or they are selling products for companies and getting money for it. Advertisement provides valuable information regarding products but people need to understand that a salesperson is still a salesperson whether they are exalting the next safety feature in that vehicle or whether they are pretending like that foundation has solved all their skin problems whether it be 1954 or 2024. Hocking a product is always Hocking a product regardless of if it is a sales floor of a dealership or symposium or it is a social media platform or the internet.

I have supported creators for years by always going through affiliated links if available. If I am going to order anything in my regular life, even a Target food delivery, I look for any affiliated link from the creators I watch which match the retailer and go to the site that way. If I am going to shop anyway, someone else might at well benefit from it. It only takes a few minutes to find an affiliated link so not a big deal to do. If creators have affiliated links to common retailers listed in every video, it makes it easier.

This is a great explanation of how “influencer marketing” is a business. And if we want to keep our favorite creators as honest as possible, we need to support them by our simple engagement, impressions, reach, following so they do not have to rely on ads hidden as reviews.

I was also surprised to see these Sephora “challenges” to get points. Basically you have to buy things in certain categories like “clean skincare” “clean beauty” “pick up order” “recycle your packaging” and then you get more points. I guess I can see the benefit in tha bc you can spend less money and get more point, but you’re still spending money. Yesterday they had a reward that was so popular that I saw ppl saying there were going to shop just to get point for he rewards gift. I had extra points so I got the popular gift, but there’s no way I would shop just for points. And they removed it bc I guess so many ppl were getting it. I literally purchased something for $3 for it so I guess a lot of ppl were doing that, but it was a 250pt reward, meaning I spent $250 for those points. That was the only prize I’ve ever seen worth the points to be honest.

Okay SO…longtime ulta employe here. I love you Jen and have been watching for a while. I completely get what you’re saying about the statuses being “traps” ESPECIALLY if you’re working to reach that status for a reason (to feel superior, to “pass a level”, etc). However, I will say, the one thing about Ulta’s rewards is that you actually get money back for shopping there in their points system. It’s not some BS mini free gift-it’s actual money to spend there. WHICH i totally get is another trap to get you to spend more money there and keep going with the vicious cycle lol. However, if you genuinely enjoy shopping at Ulta, purchasing makeup, and have a rewards account, it truly does “pay off”. Plus as Diamond and Platinum, those points never expire, meaning you can save and save them and don’t have to “rush to spend them”. Those statuses also get exclusive sales and coupons which at times are better than brand website sales. Long story short, I absolutely agree with you-just wanted to put in my two cents 🥰

I’ve tried to get on board with short form content but I just can’t do it. There’s just really no way to know if a product is that good in 3 minutes. I’d rather spend the time it takes watching an in depth video from creators I trust. In reality a lot of people spend just as much time watching one long video but watching multiple short videos and wasting money on top of it. I enjoy watching Allie Dawson and Heather Austin because we have the same skin type. I know, that they’re going to review a lot on products for oily skin. And on the other hand, I love your and Angelica Nyqvist reviews because they’re going to be honest. May not have the same exact preferences but there isn’t any BS involved. I just hope these creators and ones like them don’t get discouraged by the Mikayla’s, Alex’s and Meredith’s. Sorry for the long comment, I’m just very opinionated on this topic!

I’m much wiser now and seeing some influencers doing their best to not not put down a truly awful product simply for the money really gets my goat. These days, if it’s not recommended by you, Mia Maples or Robert Welsh then I’m extremely wary. That said, I’ve also discovered Catrice, Essence and Wet N Wild via a few channels and been very impressed by the products I’ve bought, especially as I’m on more of a budget, but Lord do I wish I could still afford my favourite Chanel lipstick and foundation!

Thank you for making this video! I especially found the Influencer Trap section insightful. It does seem like you would have to buy a lot of product, more than you could actually use, just to stay current. And there's no guarantee that the video will make any money, even if you can monetize it. I still like watching longform reviews, especially your reviews when you do them. If I'm going to buy new makeup or skincare, I want to know abut the downsides of the product, not just the good stuff. I have toyed with the idea of making beauty content for a while now, but I feel that I may be way too late to this party to make any headway. I'm an older woman whose finger is NOT on the beauty pulse, so I would be constantly behind the trends. I'm also on a budget, so that rules out buying a bunch of makeup that I either don't want or need for just one video. I'm also working a couple of jobs which limits how much time I could devote to making videos. I do know that I wouldn't go into it with the sole goal of making money, but I worry that I would run out of energy and enthusiasm to keep making videos if I wasn't getting any views or positive feedback of any kind. I think if I started now, I would probably make a lot of Shop My Stash videos because I have a lot of makeup already, truly honest reviews videos, and tutorials for glam looks for older people, even though I know tutorials aren't really popular any more.

I'm glad you touched on this whole "conscious consumerism" aspect to the makeup industry side of things. A few other creators who make great points on these as well is Shawna Ripari or Laralikesmascara (off the top of my head) who truly focus on the negative side of just general over consumption and the problem alot of these bigger creators make. Over the past couple of years, I've tried to slow down my main overflowing category of eyeshadow palettes, and this past year, I've tried even harder to truly buckle down on spending in general. I don't find that I'm being influenced to buy anything or overspend in every category of makeup, but with the constant push of new releases there's not much "new" or "innovation" that can be done in makeup. I believe all of our current makeup stashes are enough, we just need to find new ways to use these products to realize that we can create a vast product line with say 3 or 4 of our own. I say the makeup community isn't a community it's just become an industry full of money hungry people. (Not all of us)

If they cannot answer why they are suggesting this to you specifically, walk away. for me, the biggest thing I did to become more conscientious as a consumer was to basically cut off all the social media that simply made me keep scrolling (i.e. tiktok, instagram). I still sometimes use instagram but it's only to follow artists and other non-consumer based pages. and on youtube, I try to follow people who promote the values that I'm aiming to achieving like Robert Welsh and this channel

As an ex makeupholic i used to buy anything and everything that was popular several of every thing in different brands and ended up having lots of unused makeup 🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️ but 2020 came to wake me up and since then i only buy what i really need, products that i go through, like brow pencil mascara concealer setting spray primer lashes foundation only when i finish last one and so on . Uuff i saved alot of money 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

I will NEVER buy anything that is sponsored by a youtuber. I was side eyeing the clearly very unhealthy looking ones pretending they eat vegetables with Hello Fresh, and I know no one is out here playing Junes Journey either.

I loved June’s Journey . They changed a lot about the game so I stopped playing , but I loved decorating my island

To me, you covered it all. This is one area where I’m so thankful that I tend to be a cynic. If there’s a trend that I’m curious about, I look into my stash…if it’s going to require a particular product, I’m out. I have many more opinions, thoughts, feelings and beliefs on this subject, but there are only so many hours in the day, and I have things I gotta do. 🤪👍😊

I feel like this is why raw beauty Kristy has been hit so hard by these changes. She’s for the most part extremely trustful and though she gets a lot of PR she doesn’t seem to get the beauty related sponsers and stuff anymore but rather more lifestyle. I hope she never gives up though bc she’s one of the few I trust. I’ve even recently given up on Taylor Wynn and watched her since 2016

I needed to hear this. Thank you so much Jen. I am a impulse buyer. If i am sad or had a bad day i buy stuff.😢
