    I say keep the full time work. Once creators go full time on KZread, it becomes a game of playing the algorithm and going for lowest common denominator content. It becomes about views rather than passing valuable info. So many channels put all their eggs in the KZread basket and have become unwatchable because they are controlled by the whims of KZread. This channel is very good because it isn't beholden to views above all else.

  • @YourBlackLocal

    Yes, the industry experience and insight can only be obtained being inside the industry itself. A lot of KZreadr once made it full time, they left their main field and became a media professional, losing the essence of what made them interesting to listen to. The only great fulltimers left in this space i can think of are some of th science communicator in STEM field. The reason is, they’re well trained in science, and most importantly science papers are published in full. Not many fields keep you relevant like that. In most fields you can only know what you need to know, so leaving destroys your source of knowledge and information.

    Hey Richard, it was great to meet you at the Blossom event in Toronto. I wish we got more time to chat! I'll share my perspective, for what it's worth. When you do KZread full time, it does become more of a stressful grind. I was talking to Nate O'Brien, and he said one of the benefits of him leaving KZread was that he no longer has the feeling of always needing to make a video, or thinking about the next video. I don't know if you get this feeling, but when I left my job and became a KZreadr full time, I definitely felt/feel it. It makes it challenging to truly enjoy vacations, or even take a break from working. I always feel like I need to have another video in the works, and if I don't I get stressed. Additionally, as you mentioned, KZread income is extremely volatile, and you need to play the algorithm. This is why most KZreadrs (myself included), have other sources of income, like a Patreon, a book, or a course. The best KZread strategy is to actually not have your KZread income be your main source of income, because you have no control over it. I know that courses and books have a very bad reputation from KZreadrs, especially in finance, but I do understand why people make them. (I myself wrote a book and have a Patreon community.) I think you can do these things right, though, and truly add value by doing your best for the people who support you. Anyways, I think I just went on a tangent, but my point is it does turn into a full time job that is more risky, volatile, uncertain, and stressful. It's not for everyone, and it's not easy. You sound extremely happy and comfortable with your job, the amount you post (every 2 weeks), and your work/KZread/life balance. So I guess the question for me is, why change it? What are the benefits? What are the pros and cons? It's absolutely incredible what you have achieved and built while working a full time job, and it really seems to be working for you, and it's amazing to watch. I'm not trying to talk you out of it by any means. At the end of the day, you should do what's best for you. I am just sharing my perspective and how becoming a full time KZreadr has felt for me. Don't get me wrong, either. I love it. I love the chaos, making videos, building an audience, having a voice, getting invited to events, etc. There are A LOT of perks, and for me, those perks outweigh all the negatives, which is why I still do it. I have no idea if this will be useful, haha. But there's my perspective. I know you'll make the right choice for you :)

  • @ThePlainBagel

    @ThePlainBagel

    Ай бұрын

    Thanks Daniel - likewise disappointed we didn't have more time to chat! That's definitely the perception I have of it; much like entrepreneurship, full-time KZread is high-risk high-reward, and I agree that outside monetization strategies can help and be done responsibly. I am very on board with Patreon-supported content, and I personally love when creators publish books when they aren't on getting rich quick, but yes the space does have a bad reputation. I suppose in a way being a full-time creator often means exploring the idea of being a creator in more than one avenue, which needs to be done with just as much care as your original content, and that's not something I'm crazy about pursuing. A lot comes down to personal preference - I'm glad you're able to thrive in that challenging environment!

Why chase someone else's perception of a "dream job" as a full time KZreadr when you've already got the actual dream setup: a fulfilling job, an enjoyable hobby that earns you some extra income, and work-life balance. Chasing the algorithm as a full time career leads to perverse incentives and outcomes. Audiences have seen it time and time again on this website. From my audience perspective, I think your content is so high quality, trustworthy, and respectable because you aren't so fully beholden to the algorithm. So keep doing life your way man. That's what drew me here.

    My partner and I create KZread channels for Npos and associations. Building on solid knowledge and experience makes for great content, not just in finance. But as a CPA myself, there are few channels I watch - I like the plain bagel because I know you’re still in the mix with the day job. Adds credibility IMO. The internets need a lot more like you!! Also, appreciate the Canadian-ness. Hello from Banff.

    Good for you Richard, things do change in the financial world and having a front-row seat (i.e. a job) is grounding and fodder for new material in the long run. Really appreciate your perspective and hope you have decades of content ahead of you (along with Mr. Boyle, another one of my favourites). Wishing you and your family all the best. Cheers.

    Im glad you can achieve such balance in your life. Keep up the great work on the channel and dont ever feel bad with a slower release schedule, it really does make your content feel more like a treat instead of the absolute deluge that other full time creators get forced into.

    I spent my 20s doing freelance and contract work. I started a US sole proprietorship business. I hustled like crazy through the pandemic. In my early 30s I went back to school. My reasoning being that if I was trying to learn to run a business and compete as an individual, I would likely have better success applying the same skills to a professional job at an established firm. I'm now working downtown in a major American city with a bunch of talented young people in their early 20s. Everyone has been patient and supportive. There is a lot to be said for working in a professional community. Having work-life balance. Having institutional resources. Having people to rely on when you need a break or have an emergency. You make great content. Your finance background also probably helps you realize that being successful at youtube is going to be based on luck even if you personally make great content. Your business background probably helps you understand that youtube is a revenue stream, not a career. Great video and I hope it has broader appeal for younger people who are looking for the quick cash and social cache that comes from doing youtube. It isn't a substitute for a real career.

    Been watching your content for a while, and for context, I watch Perun videos. Literally PowerPoint presentation style videos. I think a lot of people listen to KZread more than they're watching. The style change hasn't bothered me at all. And I'm a dad who also works 76 hour weeks, I get it. I'm certain the content is more important to your type of viewers than the animation.

    Reason number one seals it. If you find what you’re doing now fulfilling and satisfying, then keep doing that. Diversification is key, and you have that right now, and it sounds like your employer is pretty cool. If you close off your employment and go full time KZread, you’re upping your concentration risk. On top of that, the “hobby” aspect that makes KZread enjoyable will go away once your dependence on it grows. You’re your own person, of course, so not only do you get to do whatever makes you happy, but you might not go the same path as everyone else who’s taken the full time KZread route. This is good, because most channels that get big and have a big following on the way up because they’re genuine and interesting and their content is enjoyable, quickly become insufferable when they go KZread all the time, because they need more content, thus increasing the quantity of posts, which nearly guarantees a decline in quality, plus the habits you need to do to up your engagement and income levels to make the full time shift worth it. You do you my man, but from the sounds of your own words, you’re (currently anyways) sitting in the sweet spot. Both for you and your fan base.

Like you said, there's a lot of synergy with it, but I would also add that the fact that you're able to stay authentic without having to worry about KZread monetization is probably the greatest thing that makes your channel stand out, we notice it. Oh, and the release rate is fine, I would wager most people don't like to have to binge-watch and sift through dozens of irrelevant videos just to find the relevant ones.

    I don't know if anyone has or will make this point (I'm not going to read all 242 and counting comments to find out), but I do want you to know that you have (unintentionally?) created a channel that has great appeal to senior citizens. I am not a flashy person, and I suspect others in my generation are not into all the click bait and other means whereby content creators strive to grow clicks. You are straightforward, easy to understand, transparent, and well informed. I search for channels such as yours - they are few and far between. Stay right where you are, don't let KZread burn you out, spend that time with the boys, and thanks for your channel.

    i was watching a video the other day about how finance youtubers might start out with good intentions, but there's only so much solid advice you can give before you run out of regular content. if you're doing youtube full time, you have to post on a regular schedule to stay relevant and keep up the revenue you need, which is why so many of them end up falling into clickbait content and scammy "classes". having a steady job removes that pressure, which is why this is one of the few finance channels i keep coming back to. it's a very lucky position to be in! and it benefits everyone

    One of the reasons I value your content so highly is that you are “in the trenches.” I think your job gives you good exposure that most other creators don’t have. Selfishly it also means your content quality remains really high for your audience. Plus who knows what the future holds - keeping your resume with relevant experience means you can pivot if you want to if youtube becomes less profitable
