Dearest Leena, didn't want to slay you with my question :D , but again, it's a huge compliment you answered it. As a musician, I know it's a special skill to score both the critical and commercial success, that was the reason why I asked it. I think you being in the industry gives you a lot of data, but you process that in a unique way - which makes you a perfect book author!! GOOD LUCK and looking forward to reading it, even it's 6 years from now! :)

I didn't think my book was suitable for traditional publishing, decided to self-publish, and then my friend told me she thought it the best/most commercial book I'd ever written. I can't say I regret it, because I do appreciate all the experience I gained, but it's definitely not something that should be looked at as a quick solution. I understand the worry about being influenced because you have knowledge of the industry, but try not to think too much on it. I wish you the best of luck with your writing, and look forward to hearing more about it in future.

I just found you and I want to say thank you for reviews on not YA books (I don't read much YA and there are not many non YA youtube channels). I have to recommend The Orphan Master's Son by Adam Johnson. It's about a North Korean man whose life is controlled by the DPRK. I think I love this book so much because it ranges from very sad to complex and sometimes even funny, I think Johnson really captures the bizarreness of North Korea and really looks at how can someone define themselves, have their own identity or create their destiny when the state has total control. Some crazy things happen in this book and usually the most crazy are events that Johnson references from North Korea's one newspaper. I cannot recommend this book enough, Johnson is a wonderful storyteller and hope others will enjoy it as much as I did.

I put together a poetry anthology for charity. And it was soooo much more work than I expected it to be. And I didn’t even have to write it. I’ve been working on a novel for a couple of years, and there’s no way I would self publish. Way too much work and stress. BUT I have put together a book of my own poetry and uploaded it to a self publishing site so I could get a proof copy (but not actually publish it) because I thought that would be a nice way to store my poetry rather than in my computer.

How hard is it to get into the british publishing word asn an inmigrent? I'm from Argentina, doing a bachelor's degree in literature and a bachelor's in publishing in the University of Buenos Aires. I know that my degree is validated over seas and i lived in the U.S from the ages of 2 - 9 y/o so i know the language, it's basically my mother tounge. People say that it's really hard to get into the publishing world in the UK, but i would love a professional opinion!

  • @insertbookpunhere

Unfortunately, in order to get a visa to work in the UK, you pretty much have to already be in the UK. If you decide to get a higher degree, you could do it over here and then you'd have the chance of getting into the industry and staying on with a visa.

Almost totally out of the blue, but: how haven't we publish a collection of steamy fanfition from tumblr?! We have Instagram poets getting books, now I need some tumbl erotica! On the video tho - it's awesome to see that you are so invested and intrested in book publishing. I was thinking about becoming a copy but I also like being a librarian, so I'm sticking with this one for now. Can't wait to see you published! And I'm gonna joing the club this week, just let me get back to civilization from my vacation :D

Yes! Along this line, I think it would be interesting to hear about the "place" of fanfiction within the broader context of the mainstream publishing industry (for example, new books written based or expounding on texts in the public domain all the way to things like the 50 Shades phenomenon), the feelings of authors and editors/publishers on fanworks based on books they produce and how (if at all) the wide availability of such content online has shifted consumers' reading habits. On a different note, I'd also be interested to hear more from the KZreadrs turned authors on their experiences writing and becoming published, particularly now that Leena has touched a bit on the publishing side of the equation.

This is from a year ago lmao but I’m pretty sure Interlude press publishes a lot of fanfic (mostly story oriented - less smut - and definitely authors over the age of 18). Im part of an old (10 years) and very popular fandom where a lot of the most popular storyline fics have been published into books. It exits out there, it’s just less likely to arrive in your bookstore.

Hi Leena, thank you for your super interesting videos. My name is Arezoo and I am an architect. I am in the process of writing a book on "conscious development," which looks at development, sustainability, and urban development from a more holistic point of view. The lingo of the book is not academic, it contains a lot of personal stories as well as points and discussions on the level of principle. I am 30 percent into writing the book so I am starting to look into different editors and publishing houses...So my question is, how would I understand the genre of the book. Which figure can I contact to understand this a little better? and If you have suggestions for publishers

Not that I'm a published author or anything but it sounds like your over thinking this book thing. I know every author has their own way, but it does sound like you're all business and no pleasure about the process. I would stop reading books about writing books and immerse yourself into the world your writing. If you don't want to be immersed in it, no one else will either. Scrap it, find your passion and it will write itself.
