Hello Dr. Wong. I had a diagnosis of IVDD for my mix breed dog from assessment and xrays at an Urgent vet care here in the Tampa area. My question is when I took her to a regular primary care vet for follow up, she said she didn't see the IVDD on the xray that I was told is visible on her spine xray T11-12 and L4-5 I believe. Should I find a radiologist to review the films? She also has suspected congenital hip dysplasia that the primary care vet said it could be either of these diagnosis causing her symptoms which were pain, yelping holding up one leg and shaking of her legs when standing and difficulty squatting to go potty. She avoided squatting so much that she went over 48 hours without peeing. Meds and rest and she improved a lot within a week and even more after 3 weeks. Moving forward without a definitive diagnosis what is the best line of treatment now?

Thanks for asking. X-rays and exam can SUGGEST IVDD but can’t confirm. MRI is the best test and sometimes CT works quite well. If MRI isn’t a possibility for you, then treating presumptively with strict crate rest, pain medications and anti-inflammatory medications is quite reasonable, especially if still able to walk. Since you’re in Tampa, we’re not that far away. Our Jupiter office is likely the closest to you.
