Sazerac employee here; I'll just say, at our facility they expanded the BT product holdings to basically take up 100% of our rickhouses. We also acquired a large chunk of acreage off site for new rickhouse construction, as did Green River in the next town over. That being said, I don't think it would be to the point that demand tanks. With quality control being a huge thing right now for us, if anything it'll just make those allocated products a little bit easier to find. Which would be good for people who have never even seen some products on the shelf before.

LOVE the discussion on the state of the industry. I hope the pendulum doesn't swing back too hard and clobbers some good-to-great craft distilleries. As a consumer I will be happy to see prices come down and the secondary market get minimalized.

Buffalo Trace's warehouse expansion gave them an extra 1.1 million barrels+ of aging capacity. The oldest barrels are now ~6 years old. When their tsunami of supply starts making it's way to the market over the next 7 years or so, it's going to have a serious impact on other distillers(and brands that are sourcing). They're going to crush it but consumers will be buying BT products and less of whatever else is available. Demand will not increase in perpetuity unless the industry can really develop the international market(possible but highly uncertain). Craft beer is going through a reckoning at this very moment with lots of breweries closing and flatish demand. My money is on bourbon dealing with a similar reckoning within 5 years. The amount of expansion is insane.

Agreed. Guys who sell at retail tell me tequila is starting to make a move and people I know who work at Maker's and Beam say they're seeing a slowdown. Bourbon has had a phenomenal run but tastes change over time...things go in cycles. In the 70's kids didn't want to drink what their dads drank and went with clear spirits. Bourbon languished for a couple of decades. We might be seeing this happen again.

@@TheMarcopix I've heard the same about tequila. You're spot on with the comment about tastes changing. Assuming bourbon will keep growing is a bubble mentality that never ends well. I guess we'll find out if these massive corporations can push bourbon into countries where it's a niche market at best at the moment. It does help that many of the legacy distilleries are owned by spirits corporations with a global presence.

Jim Beam is releasing a 16-year Old Grand Dad this year. That’s going to add hype to the brand. They would be releasing a 16-year Bakers if they were replacing it. I could see them repackaging it as an age stated/premium bourbon, but that would be shocking.

  • @JoeScar412

I could totally see Beam Suntory discontinuing OGD 114. I don't want them to, hell no! It's my go-to bourbon. It's my do everything bourbon that I don't feel bad about drinking and sharing too much of because of the price. The reason I think it very well could happen is they could sell it for so much more money. It is worth every bit of $50-$60 per bottle. If they cut out OGD 114, and introduced a new whiskey, maybe a 110-120 proof Basil Haden, with a really cool bottle, filled with OGD, it would sell and they'd make a lot more money. They're losing money big time on OGD 114, and we are benefiting from it with its value. Unfortunately, most good values come to an end because someone in the chain sees a chance to make more money.

I don’t buy Basil Hayden, but look at how popular it is at 80 proof. Bud Light, Michelob Ultra, Jack No7…. The list goes on. For people like us, we know our stuff. Gen pop buys what’s good and what’s cool. I still think an older higher proof BH would fly off the shelf. Cool new bottle, a bit of marketing and hype… With the OGD juice in it…

Ok so I think you all are getting way too confused on Hidden Barn. It was started as a collaboration between Royce Neeley from Neeley Family Distillery, Nate Winegar from 5280 and Jackie. For Series 1, the white labels, they blend directly from Neeley, for Series 2 they used MB Roland, the camo labels. Everything, as far as I know, is at the original distilleries aging but now I assume all barrels will move to Neeley or another new Hidden Barn only location. My guess is that the purchasing, was just buying out 5280 but not sure about that part itself since Royce was already a partner.

Im really sensitive to the nutty profile from beam and HH. I dont get it on ogd 114 or bonded. Ive only just got my first bottle of it a few weeks ago since its not sold in my state and found it out of state, but ive had the bonded for awhile and i dont get that typical beam nutty funk from it. I also dont think its all that hot for 114 proof. No more than weller full proof. I always found weller 107 pretty hot for 107 proof. But the last couple pours ive had 2/3-3/4 through the bottle and finally not as hot. I always drink cask strength stuff, 115-125+, but 107 always seemed hotter than a lot of 115 proof stuff. 114 was a little hot the first pour, but the next couple after a couple weeks i dont think were hot at all

@@jacksmith2315Beam products can be that way. I picked up a single barrel Knob Creek 9 (Black Label) on post in Germany 2 years ago, 120 proof, but drank like a 90. No burn. I picked up a store pick, same label here, has a burn, but still sip-able.

How do you explain stores no longer having OGD 114 in their systems? I've personally found this at Binnys and seen others say the same.

Could be distributors not having any stock of it or not wanting to give that specific store or chain any of the stock? Or like the RNDC issue with Sazerac a couple of years ago playing up the hype of it to get other inventory sold? Could be that the brand is discontinuing, but also, I would think there’d be outstanding inventory already running through the 3 tier system and it wouldn’t just disappear overnight. IF they’re discontinuing it now in 2024-25 to have that inventory run through the system and give time to switch aging barrels over to another product.

Thats exactly what i said. Age it for another year or two, maybe slap an age statement on it, and rerelease as basil hayden cask strength. Or age it longer. Slap a 10yr age statement on it and 3-4x the price.

I am based in the UK and I would love to see the Bourbon market open up internationally here ! we can only get hold of a very small selection from most of the heritage distilleries and a couple of odd bottles from everyone else plus the prices here are just ridiculously high when compared to the average US prices so expanding into our market would be a win/win for both consumers and producers. The US spirit market share seems to be moving to Vodka and Tequila (60%-ish market share in 2023) and US domestic bourbon consumption seems to be dropping quite rapidly, Jack Daniels have noticed this and have started to release bottles in the standard UK/EU sizes (700ml) to combine domestic and export sales in one convenient bottle size and I feel that more US producers do need to follow their lead if they want to expand their market overseas. When it comes to Bourbon vs single malt Scotch there's such a different flavour profile between them both that I feel that they can both co-exist side by side in the international market and that could be a saving grace for many bourbon producers if they simply open their minds to the international market profits that are readily available for a good product. Personally I think that the bourbon market whilst it is struggling in the US could see a world wide boom if the parent companies think outside of the box (re: domestic sales) and think more about export sales and product promotion. Buffalo Trace have just opened a 'shop' here in London which shows that they are thinking of the International market as a way of relieving the falling US bourbon sales to get them through what will ultimately be a lean patch over the next few years. Only the bigger companies that are focusing on export sales will be safe from the coming US bourbon market crash that is just around the corner. Seems stupid to think that when smaller distilleries close through lack of domestic US sales that people outside of the US (the export market) could have easily kept them afloat with additional sales ! What's that saying....'Think BIG or go home !' Well it's more like 'Think EXPORT or go broke'......Just my 2c worth.

I seen a couple ppl say this. But also seen someone say they worked for beam and 114 wasnt going anywhere just yet, but most likely will in 3-5yrs. I dont see why they would wait seeing as how they only make less than $1000 off a barrel and could be making $2000-4000. When it does get pulled, i bet its rereleased as basil hayden cask strength
