I had my first colonoscopy at 36 years old because I’m high risk due to family history. During my first colonoscopy, they found two polyps which they removed. Now on to my second one tomorrow at 41 . Fun times. It’s still not as clear as I like but I have one glass of laxative left.

My artery was nicked and I was hemorrhaging to death. My surgeon called in Dr. Gandolfo to put a clip on my artery and stop the bleeding. Dr. Gandolfo saved my life that day. I still go to him. I was worried because after following all of the instructions on how to drink the potion (the prep) and after taking the 4 laxatives that were prescribed, I didn't have much activity in the bathroom. I waited hours and nothing. I did go, but only like twice at night and twice in the morning. My fear was not being cleaned out enough for the Doctor to perform the procedure. Great news. I gotta say this: my colonoscopy was no problem! My doctor told me to decrease my eating gradually over a period of--I think--four days, so that in the last day or two I was having only liquids. I was expecting to have an awful time after I drank the Nulytely or whatever that was. Nope. Nothing disgusting, nothing dramatic happened. My daddy died from colon cancer, so it's been very important to me to have a colonoscopy. I was 45 when he died and my dr recommended another in 5 yrs. So that went on for about 15 yrs, but when i turned 60 I told my dr at least every 3 yrs. Last week i did my colon prep, but your body doesn't cooperate like it used to. The prep didn't work this time. Its happened before, so I 'll have to do it all over again as soon as the dr can work me in. I really don't mind after seeing what my daddy went thru. I've nearly always had polyps removed too. That prep is worth one day for the rest of your life.

One thing to remember from childhood - if you hate the taste of something, hold your nose. That's how I made it through the prep - held my nose while drinking the prep, then continued to hold it for a bit while I drank the chaser (I let go half way through the chaser). It made it all much more bearable.

One “pro tip” I didn’t see anyone mention yet: The repeated rounds of diarrhea, and subsequent showers/cleaning, may irritate your anal region during the prep process. Therefore, my trick is to apply 40% zinc oxide rash cream preemptively before each toilet “session.” Also, it helps to maintain some perspective while you’re drinking the prep fluids. I drink that stuff like my life depends on it, because some day it very well might. That attitude helps maximize your motivation and focus, as well as your gastroenterologist’s ability to do his/her job for you. Lastly, for those going through the procedure for the first time, be assured that once the prep is complete, the worst is over. Basically, all you have to do is show up, take a nice nap while the good doctor is doing his/her thing, and then go out and treat yourself to a nice big breakfast!

Just prior to my second colonoscopy I had an appointment with my gyn, and she told me to use Desitin to help with the anal irritation/pain from the repeated rounds of diarrhea. I kept a plastic bag in the bathroom and a box of disposable gloves (Desitin doesn't wash off readily), and after every session in the bathroom, I applied some Desitin and could peel the disposable glove off and put it in the plastic bag for later disposal. The use of the Desitin was SO helpful. And people should be aware they might not get much sleep during the night after they've used the prep; the loo will summon you at all hours. And one last tip: cover the seat of your car with a thick towel (you know--just in case).

Even though I’m a healthcare, professional, my upcoming colonoscopy was making me nervous... I’m so careful with my diet that the idea of ingesting the prep was really causing me anxiety. I happen to find your video and love it! I laughed all the way through it and feel so much better! Just seeing you taking us through the prep deescalated the whole thing for me. The tip about using zink oxide or Desitin to protect the bottom is great to know. One motivating thought for me was knowing if I did a good prep, I wouldn't cause the doc to cancel my procedure. The thought of having to go through the prep again....was the clincher! If you're worried you might leak en route to the colonoscopy office/clinic/hospital: buy a box of disposable underpants. You don't want to leak as you dash at home to the toilet. Take 2 with you to your procedure. After the procedure, you will want to rest up and eat lightly. I went home and slept. I'm so grateful my daughter drove me to and from the appointment. She took good care of me! ❤️

I personally like the 'miralax and sports drink' prep. I like having control over the flavor. I prefer less volume, so prefer the prep that uses the nasty nasty tasting Mag citrate to the larger volume one that just uses the PEG and bisacodyl. The important thing to keep in mind is that there are lots of different bowel preps, all of which work. So if one fails for you then try another. Good gelatin (not pre-mix, but apple juice firmed up with pure gelatin) is a nice way to ward off hunger during the 'clear liquids' period. I am also a rectal cancer survivor, and I wouldn't wish my journey on my worst enemy. Get scoped!

  • @jonathanedelson6733

    @jonathanedelson6733

    Жыл бұрын

@Yuli you will need to work with your doctor to find the combination of things that will work. But to start, are there 'sports drinks' that you like? Miralax is pretty tasteless and a standard prep uses it mixed with sports drink. Next point is you can actually try the various prep agents in small quantities to evaluate the flavor before you do the prep. Finally you should probably look at the lower volume preps, because even if you like the taste the quantity can make you feel bad. Again you should ask your doctor for professional guidance, not some random person across the internet, but the above should help comfort you that there are lots of techniques available to make your prep comfortable and successful. Best wishes Jon

The miralax prep is what they normally recommend at my GI, but after a bout of constipation thanks to a narrow spot in my small intestine, I needed to get that blockage cleared before it put me in the ER. So I went to the drug store and found magnesium citrate. My girlfriend loved poking at me about how much I complained about the taste of the prep, so when she needed a laxitive I gave her a bottle of magnesium citrate. "Oh this cherry flavor doesn't taste any different from cherry flavored candy, no big deal," she said. After a couple of hours that stuff kicked in and she was in the bathroom shouting "WHY WHY OH MY GOD WHAT DID YOU GIVE ME!" She's a pharmacy tech now. Anytime anyone asks where it is, she tells them "the demon water is on aisle 3". Best laxitive of all time though. :)

@@docferringerCherry flavor? Eww! I get the lemon-lime one and put it in the fridge. Once it's good and cold, it tastes like Sprite. But yes, it is demon water. I much prefer to prep with it than even the miralax/sports drink option. The WORST prep I ever had to do was with "Purge" - which was a lemon flavored oil. Second worst was the big gallon jug of powder that you added water too - sooooo much water! And it was salt water. It was horrific.

I've had several colonoscopies over the years as one who was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in my 30's, so I've gotten pretty good at it. Something I do to mask the taste of the prep is to suck on a wint-o-green or spearmint lifesaver prior to and during the time I consume the prep. The mint coats your tongue and the roof of your mouth and really helps the prep go down much easier. Plus you still have the residual flavor of the mint which helps to prevent gag reflex. Additionally, a box of aloe personal cleansing wipes can be your best friend. Best of luck with your procedure.

As long as the mint isn't red or purple, there should be no reason why you can't use it. As I said, I've been doing Colonoscopies for over 30 years and it's never been an issue. In addition, I just use the mint to coat my mouth and tongue. Once you've downed the prep, you can spit it out. Well, it all depends upon the prep that the GI recommends. After 5 colonoscopies, I have this down. My GI recommends Miralax. You can use whatever clear liquid to mix it with. I found that using cristal light is the best. I drink it at room temp and use a straw. The first 16 oz goes down pretty well. The second 16 oz is always a struggle, especially to get the last of it down. I find out that if you start feeling nauseous or full, back off on the timing between sips. The goal is to clean you out, not to drink it all down in one full gulp. You will absolutely know when you have achieved the desired results. Good luck!

I've had colon cancer & several colonoscopies. I've never taken that prep stuff, even before my first ever colonoscopy. I knew I'd never keep it down. So I "fasted" for 3 days beforehand - made a huge pot of vegetable stew & siphoned off the liquid from it whenever I felt hungry. That way I was getting nutrients & liquids. I also got a couple of bottles of magnesium citrate (a laxative) & drank those, alternating with Sprite or 7-Up. A sip of mag cit, then a swig of soda. Until the mag cit was finished. It tastes a bit like slightly salty Sprite or 7-Up. So between the "fasting" for a few days & the laxative, my colon is totally clear & I can tolerate preparing for the procedure. That's just my way of doing it.

Had my second colonoscopy done in August and was dreading the prep based on y first experience. While describing the nausea I experienced with the first one, the scheduler suggested the “lite” prep kit, which was just the same flavored battery acid in a concentrated form. Told them just thinking about the prep was making me feel sick, they then mentioned prep kit in tablet form.. Was informed that you still had to drink lots of water, but the laxative was taken in 2 rounds of 12 tablets taken 1-2 minutes apart. Sign me up! Asked why I was never offered this option before and should have expected the answer - insurance doesn’t pay for it…. Tablet form is $140 compared to $35 for the nasty liquid form. Ended up getting a coupon sent with my Rx for discounted rate and it ended up being $60 or so. Would have spent whatever it took for the improvement it made. Process and results were the same. I used a kitchen timer to monitor the rate I took the pills (which are large - bigger than a daily multivitamin) and drank the required amount of water, as well as the other small laxative pills and antacids needed. Like the liquid prep, waited a couple of hours and the magic happens. Felt the tablet regimen might not have cleansed as well as the liquid one, but it did not make any difference to the doc performing the procedure. Bottom Line: If you have the choice and can afford it, avoid the liquid prep suggested in this video and go the tablet route. Less disgusting, but still does the job needed. You still have to drink large amounts of water, but would take tap water over the flavored battery acid any day.

My secret I learned last time was: A) Stay sitting upright instead of laying down and drinking. This allows gas to come up and not make you nauseous. B) Drink Ginger Ale, but make sure it isn't flat and it is cold. The bubbles help you to burp thus helping to keep the liquid down. C) Chew gum to get the gas up in between doses. Last time the first dose went well, but I layed down on the second dose, used flat, warm Ginger Ale and I threw up because of gas build up. By the way, the pills are much cheaper now than they used to be.

I've been getting colonoscopies every 3 yrs for some time now so here's my 2 cents: 1- put EVERYTHING in the fridge the the day(s) before to get it good and cold. 2- I use a bendy straw and position it as far back in my mouth as possible. It's take a bit of practice to get the position/suction right but less of the mouth and taste buds are involved so it's slightly less nasty. 3- Be prepared: whatever flavor you choose to take the edge off...is a flavor you're probably going to avoid afterwards because of the association: choose wisely..

I had my 2nd colonoscopy this morning. I decided to start the fasting the day before as I didn't want to risk failing with the prep (as I didn't trust myself) and being cancelled at the hospital. Was given 2 different products to take. 250mls of Orange PicoPrep to take at 5pm the night before. Was quite yummy. Then, at 7pm had to drink 1ltr of Lemon Colonlytely. It took me 5 hours to drink it. Mid nite I finally downed my last mouthful. Awful. Had to be up at 5am for another 250mls of Orange PicoPrep. I overslept until 0545. Uh oh :( Anyway, got it down by 6am which was when my fasting period (officially) started. I was still shitting through the eye of a needle when I arrived at the hospital at 0845. But I scored a 9 on the BBPS so it all worked out. The worst part of the whole process was the cannula in my arm. Still very painful, like there is some needle still in there. But the results were Diverticulosis in the sigmoid colon. No cancer, no polyps, no after effects, no worries.

Bad family history of colon cancer so I have had three. My "hack" is simple. My Doc said "Clear liquids" means liquids you can see through. So at about 3-4 PM on the day of the prep -- right when you are very hungry, I go get takeout from my favorite Thai place and get their amazing hot sour chicken soup. I strain it with a strainer and all the solids are saved. I'm left with a see through amazing tasting spicy broth. It makes the nonsense of the 2 prep doses a little easier to handle...I imagine any favorite soup that can have the solids strained out will work -- but it must be CLEAR after being strained.

I accidentally came across this. I've had several. My tip is... the day before eat light. Smoothy as the last meal of the day. Day of prep... go buy a large coconut flavored snowcone (it's clear) lol. You can snack on it through out the day. Second.. I started my 1st prep around 10 am... I did the 2nd bottle around 3. That way I was able to sleep through the night. 😊 I think the main reason they want it spread out over night is they think folks can't go with out food that long. But after being up and down all night running to the restroom and then having to go when I got to surgery center I did it earlier in the day the next time and it was way better. Oh and while drinking it.. I'd drink some and rinse my mouth out each time ha. Went down a lil easier. Ha

Golytely was provided last time and it was up and down to the bathroom all night long and into the early morning. I ate leafy green salads the day before and drank Ginger tea thereafter. Procedure was performed at 9:00 a.m. the next morning . Glad I was first; had I.V. placed just in case Versed was needed to calm me from of any anxiety. Then she borrows my iPad and binge-watches Netflix - sometimes while simultaneously playing solitaire on her phone - while everything happens.

Thank you for this video!!! I just had my successful colonoscopy today. I am so thankful for your tip of having some apple juice along with the prep solution. I took a sip of the apple juice to get a good taste in my mouth first and then alternated a couple sips of the solution followed by a couple of the juice with a few couple minute breaks here and there, and got it all down. I started with it cold, too. I did another thing that helped me get cleaned out, too. Instead of starting my clear diet sometime on Wednesday for my Thursday test, Tuesday night at dinner I started that diet. When I got to lunchtime on Wednesday and had my chicken broth, Jello, and apple juice, I started running to the bathroom and emptying out then. I started the prep solution around 4:30pm. By around 10:00-10:30pm everything was already clear or just yellow. I was all cleaned out. The NP said I would know that the prep was successful when this happened. What a blessing!!! Since everything was clear or slightly yellow liquid only, I did not have to go through the torture of the second prep early in the morning. I know I would not have been able to use the apple juice with that one. ***I am not giving advice for people to skip a prep step ***

At age 77 I have had to suffer from three Colonoscopy's. The best method I found was to buy TINY ICE CUBE trays, freeze the solution and then simply swallow the tiny cubes. The cubes are quite small and can be easily swallowed. There is no liquid to coat your mouth or tongue, so the awful taste is avoided. Also, as suggested use some flavor drinks to help as well and pace yourself when swallowing the cubes.

One of the smartest things I've done in recent years was to add a bidet to my toilets. At the start of the pandemic TP was become quite scarce in my area so I decided to try the bidet in an attempt to reduce use of TP. It took some getting used to the cold water but I'll never go back to just TP. Then during prep for a colonoscopy last month the bidet really paid off. No more sore tushy from frequent wiping for me. The water rinse was perfect for the frequent trips to the bathroom during the prep.

I have had a colonoscopy every three years since my first in 2009. The first one I had NuLytely-which was pretty awful. Polyps have been found each time. For all my subsequent procedures I have had a two day prep consisting of Miralax mixed with Smartwater or Propel. I refrigerate it in a pitcher. It is completely flavorless and the electrolytes really help. In addition I take Dulcilax or Milk of Magnesia or a bottle of Magnesium Citrate. It is completely doable. ASK your gastroenterologist if he/she is ok with a Miralax prep. Lots of doctors do this.

My regimen is like yours - I do a 2 day liquid fast, and actually do the preps the day before the colonoscopy. We have to drive 2 hours to the dr office, i don't have the luxury of stopping on the road to empty my bowels. Also, the prep dehydrates me such that the nurses can't get the iv in without turning me into a pin-cushion. thus, I start 48 hours in advance and go all liquid. On the day before the scope I do all the prep and time it such that I'm done flushing early in the night. I get a good night's sleep, have some time to get my fluids restored so the iv can be done, and don't have to stop at the side of the road for flushes. Of course, right after the procedure we're hitting up the nearest burger king for a whopper meal.

A TV tray with soda or your choice of “chaser” and a container with ice to keep the prep cold. Trust me, you arent going to be running around the house doing chores towards the middle to end of that prep. After the test you ARE GOING EXPEL THE AIR that was used inside you during the test. Don’t be embarrassed, its just air and your body will feel SO much better when you just let it happen. It doesn’t smell and unless you do it, most post-procedure nurses won’t let you go home before you do.

By eating soft foods, it makes it coming out a little easier. Drinking that junk, I use a straw. Trust me a straw with a large opening works and just space out my drinking with a water chaser. The most difficult part is drinking that stuff early in the morning. Even with it cold, it's still nasty. Just remember, it's only one day and not a lifetime of drinking that crap. Soft toilet paper, flushable wipes, and preparation H are a must.

Lots of Desiten before anything happens. I did the Miralax/Dulcolax method. So easy.

Prep that I had was not bad tasting, just like drinking salted lemon water really. Worked real fast and kept on working...all night 😂 Tip: when you take your last dose, DO NOT GET OFF THE TOILET. You'll thank me later. Tip 2...keep Preperation H wipes and prep H cream handy, you'll need it, and it helps a ton, because your rear end will be sore from all the wiping. Prep H will soothe it. You're welcome.

I loved that you were able to make a yucky but important process so entertaining! I’ve had quite a few colonoscopy’s and I can tell you that the best and easiest prep I’ve had is Gatorade mixed with Miralax. And I’ve tried them all!

This I what I used too. And while it tastes better, the timing was a nightmare. My procedure was scheduled for 630 am so at 9 pm I had my 2nd dose of dulcolax and I had to take my 2nd Gatorade miralax dose 5 hours before my appt - 1:30 am. And that takes about 40 minutes minimum. I was up all night, and didn't make it in time about 5 times. I was hungry, tired, lonely, and having the biggest pity party ever. I was going to cancel after the first Gatorade drinks at 5 pm. No way was this going to be an all night party for me. I have to say the worst part for me was the prep. I felt like a hangover all night and morning. I couldn't wait for them to knock me out. Lol. But what someone else said here, it was the best nap ever. My lesson: schedule appt for late morning so I can get a little sleep.

After 3 colonoscopies I found what was best. Yes, alternate back and forth like the doctor did with apple juice but I did it with sucking on a lemon in between each sip. The lemon really works great! Good Luck!!

This is very helpful. Prep is possibly the worst part of any medical experience I’ve ever had. So this is an important video for me
