I wish it would come out in an audiobook for those of us with visual impairment. I'm currently studying the Balkans and am currently listening to Balkan Ghosts

A masterpiece. I’ve been reading and re-reading my lime green Penguin edition for decades now. A book always near my beside.

The Old Bridge on the cover is just 5 minutes walk from my place, yet I've never heard of this book before. I feel ashamed. Thanks for bringing this book to my attention.

It's quite a famous book, it's been required reading for foreign diplomats about to start serving in the lands of former Yugoslavia for 80 years now.

@@toobalkain That's interesting. I never heard it mentioned in school nor university (and I'm one of those proole who read all their required readings). I guess it's probably more familiar to foreign people who come to work in these countries. That being said, I still haven't read this and I really should. It's always fascinating to learn about other prople's opinions about your country. And I am curious to know if the author is really biased and favors one particular ex-Yugoslavian nation, as I've read in some reviews of this book.

@@LanaCelebic yeah well, even universities aren't what they used to be, I guess, I'm Slovenian with no professional interest in the history of the region but I read the book ages ago, seems like one of those books an avid reader is just bound to come across. Was just as impressed as the uploader, might read it again actually, assuming all this internet hasn't messed up my attention span too bad, it's a thick title. West's bias, probably, but don't we all have those, she was a product of her time, no fan of Turkey that's for sure but I don't think we should apply today's moral standards to literature from long ago.

I have never heard of Rebecca West. Thank you for sharing her. I can’t wait to read this.

Fascinating video. I've only read Rebecca West's fiction so far but this is a book I've had my eye on for years. I just need to get over the size of the book.

" too heavily veiled by respect to be respectful" WOW. I've had this on my radar for years, I even looked up the ebook the other day, but it was like $22... Worth it perhaps!

A coincidence. I've just started reading Lady Chatterley's Trial by C.H.Rolph, and the first witness called to the stand is 'Dame Rebecca West'.

Hi Steve, I don't know if you'll see this comment, but I am wondering if you'd recommend this book to someone who is very historically naive? I just came across this book earlier this afternoon in my local bookstore. The books was on it's side actually, and appeared to be misplaced but it caught my eye so I read a paragraph or two and really liked the authors prose. I might just go back there and pick up the book after all, I just hope the historic context isn't too over my head. Thanks, James

The author’s prose is gorgeous, and it will carry you through the book. And you’ve always got Wikipedia for historical questions, right?

I have read a couple of her novels and I know this would be wonderful but the length has dissuaded me. Now I feel feeble.

It's Scawp-yeah, not Scawp-jee, the capital of Macedonia, Skopje, South Slavic languages for the most part spell phonetically.
