Your Car's Fuse Box Explained: Everything You Need to Know About The Stuff In Fuse Boxes!

Your car's fuse box is not just filled with fuses! The fuse box contains relays, diodes, many different types of fuses, and more components that serve the electrical system and protect it from damage.
0:00 Car Fuse Boxes Explained
The automotive fuse box is a hub of protection for the electrical systems in a vehicle.
0:39 What Does a Fuse Do?
Fuses protect circuits and fail when amperage gets too high, so you can replace an easy-to-access and inexpensive fuse rather than whatever expensive part it was protecting!
2:15 What Does a Relay Do?
Relays allow a small current to control a large current. Many switches and computers don't like high amperage, so the relay handles it for them!
3:30 What Does a Diode Do?
A diode only allows current to flow in one direction, protecting components that would be damaged by current travelling in the wrong direction.
4:10 How do You Find The Right Fuse, Relay, or Diode?
Finding the right fuse, relay, or diode is an important step in troubleshooting a circuit/electronic item's issue. There are two main ways to find them, and the best way will differ from vehicle to vehicle.
5:12 How to Remove a Fuse or Relay
Removing a fuse can often be done with a fuse puller, but needle nose pliers also work well. Relays can be a bit tougher, but a dedicated pair of relay pulling pliers can help tremendously!
6:11 Why are There Empty Spaces in the Fuse Box?
Are you missing fuses? Those empty spots may be there on purpose! Sometimes they are there to allow for future-proofing, but other times it's just where a feature would be fused if the vehicle came with that feature.
6:51 Bonus: Less Common Fuse Box Information!
This section contains information about breakers, fusible links, in-line fuse holders, fuse blocks, and more!
9:32 End Thoughts
Do you have any questions about automotive fuse boxes? After finishing the video, feel free to ask in the comments section, and be sure to check out our videos covering specific items from the fuse box in more detail!
Why use a fusible link instead of a fuse?
A fusible link deals with excessive amperage differently than a fuse does. Quick moments of high amperage/current are allowed to happen, but if the amperage is high for too long, or way too high, the fusible link melts/burns away, disconnecting the circuit like a fuse would. Many fusible links are the last bit of wire before the circuit grounds to the chassis.

Empty spots in a fuse box can also exist for hidden features. Such as for allowing a vehicle to be towed with no power, by allowing the transmission to shift into neutral and etc.

This is a tremendous teaching video, which I will be re-watching and re-watching until I thoroughly understand. I see one of those awesome 04-06 GTOs in some of the shots. My question is this: I want to give my two after market gauges in my 2006 GTO their own power source tied to the ignition, so they only turn on at engine start. Right now I believe the shop wired them with the car audio which is on a switch, I think to the cigarette lighter in console. Thus when I turn the audio on with engine off, the gauges also turn on, which I do not like. So one person suggested add-a-fuse. Your video convinced me, no way. Another suggested I buy a spare fuse block and harvest a terminal from it, this idea I like very much (and your video discusses it). Do you agree? Would both gauges be able to work from a single added terminal? How do I do it? Any videos on this subject especially in a GTO? Needless to say, if you are anywhere near Phoenix AZ, I would gladly drive there and pay you well to do this.

Except he makes the same error almost every maker of tutorials commits. He spends 3 or so minutes giving a basic description of what a fuse is and why it is important, presumably under the assumption that many viewers will lack even such basic knowledge. Well and good, but then he immediately afterwards speaks of an ECU under the assumption that the same viewer will know what the term means. How many viewers might we estimate know what an ECU is but do not know the basic concepts behind the value and use of fuses? If anyone guesses anything but zero I would be very interested to hear how they think that situation came to be. But I guess he can't be faulted too badly because everyone seems to do this kind of thing and the whole tutorial itself is considerably better than most automotive how-to vids.

Hi All good stuff thank you. Confused about running 2 fuse boxes. 1 running from the ignition switched, so that fuse box only live when the key is turned the other box would have a direct feed from the battery So which car circuits need to have there feed from the fuse box switch by the ignition and which circuits need the fuse box with the permanent feed directly from the battery?

I know this is probably a very stupid question, however, im looking to find out why the relays i believe to be interchangeable are not. I have a 98 f150 and I'm trying to get my compressor to come on. Ive done a lot of testing and have more to go BUT i noticed that my manual shows i should have an ACC DELAY RELAY (FULL) and an ACCESSORY DELAY RELAY (FULL) inside under my dash on R4 and R5. Well there are no full relays at all. Before i start taking apart things that are much harder to check on why. I took what i thought to be a full relay from my junction box and when i went to place it in the R5 ACC DELAY RELAY spot its loose. All 3 of the full relays under dash have no visible metal/connectors (not sure how to say that). I was going to head to a junk yard later, but i will have to wait a day or so and would like to work on it in the meantime. You said in the video that it could be from the manufacturer just adding spots or open spots for things later. But the horn relay SHOULD fit into my ACC DELAY RELAY. Am i missing something??

As long as it for sure doesn't control anything else that you want to keep available, then yes. Sometimes that's a method mechanics use to diagnose an issue. I can't imagine any vital stuff tied to the power antenna circuit but it's always worth checking.

Seems odd that plugging into the cigarette lighter would trigger the washer fluid to spray. perhaps there’s a ghost lol jk cheers great video

Fuses all work under hood but NONE of my fuses work inside my car near my knee at the dash panel. I understand switch has to be on for some to light up but I get nothing at all. I think they have to be related. I keep getting stuck on checking relays bc nobody says the number to use in a manual multimeter

2014 Town and Country van. What is going on in my van is, the windshield wipers are going, all the lights are on in the dash, it say to check to service the tier pressure system, service the blind spot system. Plus it say the cadlic convert is gone. Getting pretty expensive with all that happening at once. I looked at the fuse box, and a few fuses are missing. Don't know how that happened. Have any idea's???

Great information. Question, I am trying to track down a charging problem. A prime suspect is an ac compressor replaced 6 months ago. The mechanic had some issues with the connector/wiring at that time. When I removed the a/c fuse inside the cab of 06 sportage, I lost all response from auto windows, (they wont operate with that fuse pulled). Is it normal or common for a fuse to control more than what the box diagram indicates ?

Thanks, and great question! While it is semi-common, those two components (AC compressor/auto windows) being linked seems a little odd. Components linked together on the same fuse tend to be either related or in close proximity, such as the power accessories/cigarette lighter fuse also providing power to the OBD-2 port. If there is some sort of relationship, like the windows being down disabling the AC automatically, that would make more sense, but I haven't encountered a car that does that. I have limited experience with Hyundai/Kia AC systems, though.

@@CarsSimplified Thanks for the response. I can say that till pulling that fuse, I knew of no relationship to the two functions. I would frequently start the ac up with some or all windows partially down till the ac got really cold on a hot day. Any suggestions for a next step?

Well, that's a possibility, but if you don't trust your mechanic, you should probably take your car to another one. Pulling the dashboard apart is a very involved job that mechanics don't want to do if they can avoid it, so if they are indeed going in there, it's not something they would pick in order to put work on the clock.

Please, What are the smaller " Physically" sized fuses. Although they have the same amperage values as the standard size, blade fuses. My fuse box has both types?

  • @CarsSimplified

    @CarsSimplified

    3 жыл бұрын

There are different sizes with different fuse codes (like ATC or ATS) that do the same job. Why an automaker chooses to have a mix is probably due to the fuse box being designed with the possibility of higher amp fuses that require a larger fuse size, and then they fill some of those larger fuse spots with lower amperage fuses so the smaller size fuse options don't fill up completely, leaving only the large section with empty spots to add new features to later. I don't know if this is the complete reasoning behind it, though.

I am trying to see the fuse for the phone (bluetooth) in which case it seems to be 13,59 but in each region i can only spot 55, 57, 58 and 11, 14, 16 and 17. Does it mean the diagram is faulty or am I reading it wrong? Apologies if it is a novice question as i am by no means an expert, just merely trying to understand what is wrong.

Hey there need some help, can I use 5amps fuse instead of 3 that was originally? I have mounted a dashcam there and it burned the 3amp fuse

  • @CarsSimplified

    @CarsSimplified

    2 жыл бұрын

Assuming that 3 amp fuse is what the manufacturer calls for, that is a bad idea; the circuit (dash cam, wires, etc.) is designed to handle a given amount of amperage, and when it gets too high, that 3 amp fuse protects it. A 5 amp fuse will not offer the protection it needs. If it burns another 3 amp fuse, there is a problem elsewhere.
