This concept of a parasite being a toxic love interest works beautifully. Parasites never intend to kill their hosts, they often attempt to keep their hosts alive for as long as possible because it benefits them and often allows them to continue reproducing.

i do have to wonder how the hell the amoeba are supposed to get out of the host body. well...they do RARELY infect humans, so i guess we're not the amoeba's usual target...question is, what DOES it usually target?

@@Casandraelfnaegleria fowleri is typically a free floating organism that primarily feeds on bacteria. Parasitism isn’t a part of its natural life cycle, but if there’s food in the form of brain tissue it will definitely take advantage. Usually in this case, when the patient dies so does the naegleria fowleri, the ending in which the protagonist is able to release them is unrealistic. The two outcomes you have are either death (most common) or eventual eradication with permanent disability.

Like some other dangerous amoeba parasites, these guys normally gorge on bacteria in soil and warm stagnant water. Being an amoeba it doesn’t really think too hard about why it’s suddenly in a place with a brain. The insides of your brain cells are perfectly edible for N. Fowleri so it just cruises along basically popping them and sucking the innards out until your brain swells up and…well… Once you die though, it’s trapped.

@@maruareys9329 I think one explanation is that, because the amoeba eats at the brain tissue, she just hallucinates on her own and she is not actually interacting with anything. Maybe the last ending is just an hallucination and the amoeba is still in her body?

I'd give him a pass for not caring about the host's life because he's literally a parasite(though that would make him just a villain), but the freaky part is that he's sorta fighting against his nature by caring anyway. Something about that is so compelling creepy I just couldn't look away.

Totally agree. It was such a relief to see a VN protag who can recognise a horrific, toxic situation and is having none of this shit. Her characterisation, especially in the good (hopefully true) route was glorious. Unrelenting in trying to get out of that nightmare, using every tool she had at her disposal, and exhibiting immense resourcefulness and willpower. I haven't rooted this hard for a character in a long time. So glad there wasn't a nasty twist in the last ending.

It was very interesting game. It reminded me of a time,i read a story of a confession from an anonymous in reddit. He started by saying how when he was little, they discovered ascarids in his body. The thought of something living inside of him-mesmerized him. He got cured eventually, but continued being interested in parasites. He studied biology, and fast forward to his college years,he *infected himself* with parasites. He liked the feeling. He said, how amazing it was to be a little aquarium for them. He overate to feed them, and never gained weight, which meant they were growing. But the.. disturbing part starts, when he started to infect other people. He confessed, how during parties,he would put tape worm and other parasites's eggs into other ppl's drinks. He said, how a girl with whom he slept during the party, gave him seams (? they're are basically bugs that eat your scalp,is that the correct word in English?if not sorry,i hope you got it anyways),he was so happy about it,that he called her to hang out, and, qnd i quote "left her a gift,in form of my babies". He infected her with parasite eggs. In the end,he says how he is infected by 27+ little parasites,to who he refers to as "babies". He sais that sometimes he thinks, what if a parasite is controlling his mind, and is making him infect others. Share his offsprings. I am pretty sure it's not a real confession, but ive read it 3 years ago,and it still stuck with me to this day. If this is real, it's disgusting honestly, but so interesting.

Equally funny concept: They nuke the lake but the radioactivity actually mutates all the amoebas into humanoid beings and now you gotta deal with your ex and the 1001 babies you abandoned at the mall.

I can imagine Marlowe not even wanting children after that. Like maybe she finds someone and has a kid, but she has night terrors of drowning the kid and the husband in this lake while she screams Niall’s name in pain and anger. Or maybe she actually kills them. Idk. Maybe she finds herself coming back to that lake, despite hating Niall. She feels compelled to. Maybe she came back after becoming a murderer herself so that her final days will be a punishment of her own doing. It sure would make one heck of an interesting sequel game.

I think the most depressing thing is the fact that in each route she has a different dying memory. One about her father, one about her mother, and one about the family the protagonist will never have. It's really a way of coping with her death. The saddest ending in my opinion is when she accepts Neil inspite of her "efforts". In the end,she decided not to call for help. Perhaps she secretly wanted to die. The protag seemed depressed comparing herself to her friends, isolating herself, questioning herself as a mother, stress from work, and feeling love sick from an unrequited love. If she wasn't so depressed, maybe the protagonist would be with her friends like she regrets in the drowned ending. I don't think her being free of the parasite actually happened.

Not nescessarily. Sometimes an abuser is not so see throught(pardon the pun) in their abuse and instead of hurtung someone directly they start taking their life little by little. For example starting with things like judging what you eat or wear or even who you interact with or simply putting you down from small choices and playing them off as a jokes. These small instances can build up as a droplets build a flood and get to people's self esteem. It even can escalate into the abused person accepting his abuse as something necessary in their relationship as he does not realise that his self esteem has been chipped away, by someone taking control of their life and heck when he confronts the abuser over their constant degradation the abuser may deflect, feign ignorance, put a blame on the abuse and not even lash out. Heck outside looking in the couple may look perfect together as the injuries don't come instantly nor is everyday with the couple suffocating. Altho our escalation came when i was assaulted while intoxicated, but not everyone separates as instantly as we did. Tbf this game addresses some toxic relationship elements, but not nearly all. Oh also sorry for the long rant.

@@Veryfreshveryflourish24 Interestingly that's exactly what Niall is. He's see through yes, but I'd like to remind that unlike him, you cannot see through HIS mind. I suspect that he takes form of someone Marlowe would like, and he also wants to love her as long as it doesn't harm him. Even Marlowe addressed that selfish attitude. The whole time I was watching this, I thought he somehow sounds eerily similar to my ex and what do you know, he's the exact same. Showed extreme love to me and started crying out of frustration when I don't agree with his ways, saying he's trying even though those actions impacted me negatively, although not so much killing my brain. (Some moments where Niall's comforting her and said he wished he could carry her - I got shivers down my spine, the ex did that too.) He even manipulated me into a relationship the same way; we're destined to meet and marry in his head although I barely get a say, even the way he talked about children, all this he put so nicely that I thought he couldn't have meant badly - by god he even sounded similar - that was traumatic. He was clear in his intentions but he also hid many things where I thought he couldn't - that's why I think Niall could be as toxic and deceitful as any ex could be. Also I really enjoy long replies so although you weren't replying to me, I don't mind.

Crazy thing is that the Amoeba described here is real and just as dangerous as described! Minus the anime boy. Mind you that the conditions are primarily in humid and hot climates and ponds of fresh water. The important thing to know is that people who live in these climates weirdly enough have a bit of a fight back against the amoeba! Also this is an important note: only three people every year get infected.

  • @AmaryInkawult

    @AmaryInkawult

There is a reason for that. The nerves that these amoeba feed on in order to get into the brain are found deep inside the nasal cavity, so you'd have to get water really far up your nose. And even then there are natural defenses that usually attacks these amoeba as they eat their way up to the brain. The amoeba that survive are the ones that do the damage, but this is fairly uncommon hence the low annual infection rate.

I mean....a murderous, brain eating parasite as a metaphor for a (specifically reproductively?) abusive boyfriend is pretty dead on. I also love how the art manages a look for him that's both oddly pretty yet still incredibly unsettling. What's funny though, is there doesn't have to be any supernatural anime weirdness going on here; you could easily read it as the poor woman's hallucinating as the infection threatens to end her life.

The Amoeba only infects 3 people a year. It's not because he has a hard time infecting, but because that he has very high standards. He's not like the common cold, who sleeps with anything with a pulse. No no, my Boi is looking for love. He doesn't have weird hobbies, like that Rabies guy who is an actual furry. He likes swimming in water on a warm night. If you like swimming, then you may have found the one. When you date the Amoeba Boi, he likes to take things slow. When you get the sudden chills, he keeps you warm. If he warmed up to you enough, you better brace yourself. When he wins your heart, the Amoeba Boi becomes an animal. You'll be feeling the heat even in the mornings. He's also a physician. He cares about your body image and keep your weight in check, and the best part? you don't even have to diet! Just a few trips to the bathroom and the Amoeba Boi will flush those guilt ridden snacks right out of your system. When he becomes your partner, he becomes a part of you. The Amoeba Boi doesn't want just your body, he wants your mind... and your soul.

I cried when watching the ending of Marlowe finally being freed. This game really did show how Marlowe was forced in a made-up relationship Nielle made in his own head when he didn't cared that he was killing Marlowe, and she had to suffer from it. When Nielle said good bye, it made me really sad. But Marlowe's scream was a win over as it sent chills in my spin from all the agony and suffering she had to indure to hide herself so she can be free. This game really brings light into toxic relationships and how impacting they are.

This really hit home for me as a kid who grew up in Florida and was thus constantly warned about not getting in warm ponds and I became utterly horrified of getting brain eating amoebas. even the name is terrifying. Naturally I’ve done a lot of research on them because I get fascinated by what I’m terrified of and this game was scarily accurate to how the disease progresses and the host gets worse and worse. Bit of hopeful news though, recently a doctor tried treating the amoeba by putting the host in a medically induced coma and then using the typical medicines that usually don’t work, and it worked! Of course, the host was very young and healthy and the disease was caught very early, but even with those factors she should have died but pulled through. Look it up, it’s super cool. Unfortunately the only way to test if this method is valid is for more people to get infected…which obviously is not ideal, but it’s still something 🤷‍♀️
