For me, the game changer was using an EQ before a boost pedal to not overwhelm the amp with unnecessary frequencies. Try cutting some of 200-700Hz and you'll see how more controlled the tone becomes! Cheers ❤️

The problem with tone nowadays is that everyone must sound this or that way. Ok, your tone is awesome, and sounds exactly as every other tone from every other album produced by a good producer. This is not a critic on your work, since I cannot do half of this quality, I'm just sharing a thought.

Very true. The original reason people loved bands like Meshuggah was that they were unique. I think too many musicians take the safe route by wanting to sound like their idols which is a reasonable place to start but if you don’t keep going down that road to find a sound that that really sounds like you and songwriting style that expresses what you uniquely bring to the music world then it gets far too homogenous and boring. I’m not saying be unique or weird for the sake of it because that just leads to novelty acts but find something expresses who you are are purely as possible.

I actually learned a few things from this. I got my guitars sounding a little cleaner for the album I released earlier this year, but couldn't really figure out how to get *that* 8 string sound. However, I am going in the opposite direction for my next 8 string project. I have a super thick and kinda muddy tone to get a wall of noise, but then I split the humbucker to get more articulation for certain parts. Absolutely filthy tone, but that's what I'm going for, just trying to be as heavy as possible. XD

I got the cheapest left handed 8 string I could find that I could actually trust, which was a Schecter C-8 Deluxe and it has a 28" scale. The price has gone up quite a bit since I bought mine in 2018, but it rips with a professional setup and some optional mods. The neck on it is nice and flat too so it's pretty comfortable.

awesome video. One thing you should address tho, that goes beyond 8 strings but all type of guitar playing, is the difference between solo guitar tone vs in the mix tone. I see people brining their solo guitar tone to a mix scenario and complaining something is wrong as it doesn't sound good within the context of the mix. Or vice versa, hearing a mix tone in a solo guitar environment and wondering why it sounds so shit alone but amazing in the mix.

Both offer a plethora of options but you aren’t locked down as much in bias, and to the majority of players who are not tone or mix savy, it’s a lot easier to dial something in or use some of the great presets in a NDSP plug in. With bias I think it requires a little more knowledge and willingness to work with it and experiment to get something beyond the scope of what most plugins can offer you. It’s like comparing daws, they are all fundamentally the same but many would argue certain ones are better once you get over that learning hurdle.

I don't have an 8 string, but I've still struggled with this on my 7 string when I go below B standard. I can usually get the 7th string sounding tight and how I want it to, but this always comes at the expense of the other 6 strings, causing them to sound lifeless and a bit shrill. Maybe it's a pickup thing, maybe it's a me thing. But, it seems to be a pretty fine line... to the point that I've just been ending up swapping back to my 6 string and having fun in Drop D instead lol

I got a really fuckin sweet tone for my 8 string by doing a y split after the drive pedal. One path is for the low end and the other is for the traditional guitar frequencies. Each path starts with an high/low pass EQ. Then the low end path goes to a bass amp and cab and the other goes to guitar amp and cab. Then the signal remerges and I blend them. I'm not down tuning, but it still sounds heavy as fuck.

Puzzled as to why you go to the trouble of buying an Ibanez M80M (tuned F standard - down one semi-tone from an 8-string guitar in F# standard) to then tune it a la Tosin Abasi (Drop E). Wouldn't it make more sense to leave it in the factory Meshuggah tuning?

These settings seem to work for the particular guitar you're using with the pickup etc. I noticed that when I'm trying to dial and tones. Using similar plugin and similar methods. I'm still really having too much low end n i'm not getting that tight tone. I have been trying to experiment using different cabinets. Different impulse responses. And i'm even when as far as purchasing impulse responses that were mixed and mastered 7 and eight string guitar.

I have one question. I feel that in the full mix this tone sounds amazing. My mind was blown when I first heard that. But when the guitar was just played by itself I did not love the tone. So do you have any recommendations on finding the balance or do I just need to suck it up and find what is best for the mix even if the tone by itself is not my favorite?

  • @KeyanHoushmandLive

Tone in the mix is very different from a tone that you just jam on. Once you mix it with the rest of the track, it’s done so in a very surgical and specialised way. Finding the balance between the two and then going the rest of the way towards “mix tone” with some extra post production is usually my go to

Maybe it's just a coincidence but I still hear all of the popping and clicking while playing the guitar that I had while using BIAS years ago. I don't get this behavior in any other plug-in, even adjusting the sample rate to not obliterate my PC's resources. I don't know why anyone would hand them their money with that behavior not being corrected after all of these years.

The scale length of an 8 string is the most important part imo. A longer scale guitar will have a closer relative pickup position to the bridge, making the tone a lot brighter. A 27.5 inch 8 string will sound better than a 26.5 with the highest quality of hand wound pickups

@@aegistechreviews7410 Maybe because I prefer a big texture sound with growl in lows like Spiritbox or Erra. But I disagree about pickups. At least output means a lot, preamp saturation is depending on that. Pickup height also determines how it sounds. On this clip the guitar sounds very clean in terms of saturation and without balls for my taste considering it's an 8-string, which can kick the shit out.
