“I don’t want to trip and fall on my death sticks” 😂😂😂 This is the funniest thing I’ve heard in a while Kaci!!! Thank you so much for making me laugh out loud and almost spit out my soup 🤣 I also totally don’t get the knitted bra/bralette trend. They just don’t work for women with big boobs at all 🍈🍈

As someone with bigger "ladies" but have also made knitted bralettes, I'll chime in - I definitely don't expect support from them, and they are luxurious to lounge in. They are my after-work-bra-is-off-sweats-are-on top, especially in summer. If I wear them during the day, it's with a bralette or a strappy lacy bra underneath and a flannel button down on top, and it's for a day I do not plan on leaving the house. Also, spicy opinion to counter a spicy opinion - I bet the person who said knitting DK/worsted weight sweaters is "weak" is a person with a 36" or under bust and only needs two skeins of fingering weight for a sweater. There, I said it. Some of us just don't have endless hours to knit our busty-ass selves a fingering weight sweater!! (That said, yeah fine I've done a fingering weight sweater.)

Totally get it, I am relatively small, and even I knit SO long on a fingering weight sweater! Would not want to make one that is larger in size. Also, maybe people just like how warm and cuddly DK weight sweaters are 🤷🏼‍♀️

I have a medical condition where I break my bones often. The most common are my ribs. I have made bras so I have the coverage but I don't worry about the support. I can't have anything tight on my rib cage and this really helps with modesty and it's just really pretty. I have had four kids and I'm 43 but actual supportive bras are not an option for me anymore. They never really were. I love making them and I love the effect.

I'm literally knitting a bra as I watch this! Because I just moved from a no winter to a cold winter place and do NOT wish to freeze my nipples off. I just imagine it as an extra layer of cozy for the really cold days.

As someone having smaller than size A cup, knitted bras are very ok. 👌😄 Using cashmere or some other luxurious yarn makes me (and my minus A size breasts) feel special. 🥰

Even with spicy comments and unpopular opinions your commentary was so kind! I’m with you on the knitted bras. Even to lounge around in I don’t see how even my smaller chest will be contained or if they are that the fabric won’t stretch or become distorted. But I can see it as a layering piece. When I lived in Boston and temps would get -10 and below or there were strong winds or wind tunnels in the city even with 3 layers and a coat my nips could cut glass. I would’ve def appreciated something soft and warm to go over my bra. And possibly reduce all my layers that were making me look super bulky. Also agree about the mystery yarn. But I did sign up for a monthly subscription where you can’t choose the yarn. But it’s a sock club. So even if i receive a colorway that I wouldn’t choose or like that’s totally fine since it’s going into socks anyway. And i could always use it for heels and toes if I really hate it. I’ve also joined an organization thats looking to distribute hand knits to people living with long term illness. That way I can enjoy trying out a pattern or yarn I wasn’t sure of to see if it’s something I’d like to knit for myself in the future or use up yarn where I hated the color or the hand feel. That way I don’t feel guilty about money spent and keep it in my house taking up space. Or worse throwing it away.

I rewound that too many times! 🤣So glad to find another knitter who shares my opinion about mohair! I cannot afford it and sometimes feel like I'm not a "real" knitter for not using it, but to know a professional knitter like yourself only uses it a little bit makes me feel so happy. 😊Thank you, Kaci, for brightening this day for all of us!

I’m with you on the swatching!!!!!!!!! I use my first section as my swatch too. B/c a small little tiny square just doesn’t have the same properties as a big garment and I’m firmly in camp “I just can’t be bothered” The only exception is colorwork color decisions - I will do some examples of the different colors to see what I like better. Wonderful vid!!! One of your best yet. And when you said the color of your yarn I thought you said “panty pink “ 😂😂😂😂😂

I do knit and walk but mostly because I knit in the bus and the subway and I need to walk between them. And if I'm in the middle of a row I might also knit all the way to my desk. I was used to walk and read, knitting is a lot easier.

At 67 I have no need of a knitted bra of any kind. lol I also have no want of a half and half shawl and I have a lot of shawls, but I live about 100 miles from Mexico and it is usually way too hot for any shawl except in winter. I have acclimated and I do wear sweaters a lot. I even have a super bulky cardi that I can wrap up in and read or knit when it's cold. I can't take the cold anymore. I get enough stares and comments about sitting and knitting when I'm out and about, I'm sure not going to walk and knit. You'd think I was a penquin at the beach here. (not many knitters, no lys, no knitting friends, knitters wasteland). I had a friend give me a pattern and tell me she wanted one but hadn't gotten the yarn yet... I do knit for others but only for those knitworthy and usually on my terms. Yarn stash - we won't talk about that. Yes, I have yarn that is old enough for junior high. Mystery yarn I have and have loved all of the colorways I've gotten. It's the only club I'm in and I get enough to make a top out of usually. In fingering cause New Mexico is way too hot for much else 9 months out of the year. Love your podcast, btw. I thought I'd probably not be able to relate to someone so much younger but you are delightfully funny and fun to watch.

I agree that knitted bras are not for everyone. Personally I see no point in knitting myself a wool bra. I live in a warmer climate and knitting a cami or a bra in something with wool would just be silly BUT I made myself a summer bra this year in linen and viscose blend and I LOVE it with all my heart. I have worn it literary everyday this summer. The most important reason I knit this bra (I designed it myself) was to wear it during hot summer days when we have up to 40 degrees and its humid and all I can wear is very light, sometimes sheer fabrics and it is not always an option to be braless... and if I am outside, I just do not want to wear something that has metal cables to hold up the cups. They are so uncomfortable and I sweat more if I wear them. The bra I made has an elastic band in the hem around under bust and it has been the most comfortable knit but I agree, I am about 92cm around bust and I guess knitted bras are more for bust circumferences on the smaller side. Would love to hear other opinions too :)

Thanks for this fun episode … and for taking down some sacred cows! Yeah…what’s with all this holding of multiple yarns together…all these trends we just fall into because everyone seems to be doing it. One comment or two to add to unpopular opinions: why is it that people are so eager to test knit? I was shocked when I found out test knitters don’t get any compensation (except the pattern for free). I assumed test knitters at least get the yarn for the project or monetary compensation for their work. But no. And another thing I don’t get: dead simple patterns for sale. The Sophie scarf comes immediately to mind. Too many for-pay patterns out there that most knitters could figure out on their own. Thoughts? Love your podcasts.

As for the knitted bras: I recently completed the nurture bralette, and the range of cup sizes/shapes it accommodates is insane. It is a modular pattern, and customizable in every aspect. Probably the best money well spent on a pattern for me lol. In regards to function, for some people their measurements are not easy to find in stores, and store bought bralettes are not reliably comfortable. Many knit bra patterns are also not designed to be TRULY wearable, and focus more on appearance than sizing.

I have been shaking my head up and down to you with at least 90% of what you agree with. My bust is zip…. 60+… 3 kids later and I work out 6 days a week…. I would not ( only me here), make a bra. Barely wear one now. I dislike any kind of large big needle knitting…..not my jam. I do make my husband hats … hats … and more hats. ( we live up North). As well usually every other year a pair of gloves, he loves ‘em. Used to make the grandkids hats but never never see them wearing. I made a cardigan for the 2 nd grader first communion…..white adorable Petite Knits pattern, box ripped open --set aside. Never heard about it once since. Shawls I love. I love them for church year round as it is always too cold. I am still on clue #1 on Monday… yikes. So I probably will skip your videos in October as I just 😂cannot keep up. Love your videos. Love your honesty. Take care.

I LOVED this episode! I can’t really buy yarn right now but I so badly want to knit the Half and Half Triangles wrap!!!!!! Do you think just plain baby alpaca would work for it, Kaci? I loved the “not everyone is knit worthy” statement. One of my radiation therapists was saying last week that he still has a hat and scarf set his grandma made for him when he was a kid and still has a blanket that his mom made for him many years ago. I said “that makes you a knit worthy person”. It was so neat to hear that he loved those items so much that he kept them. I really want to knit or crochet something for each person that was involved in my cancer journey. Maybe a small angel or something.

I’m late to the party but my #1 scandalous knitting thought is: don’t accumulate a stash! I’ve been knitting for 20 years and have stash beyond life expectancy. I’m only knitting from stash this year and frankly should continue for several more years. I wish I only had one sweater quantity (instead of 10) and sock yarn. Ps I’ve knit at least 5 sweaters from stash this year already. Your taste in yarn will change - don’t do it! The brainwashing effect of the half and half is real! I don’t knit shawls and have never knit a blanket and I almost broke the rules and bought yarn just for the half and half - what?! Instead of a tubular cast off I use the Hiya Hiya stretchy bind off. It’s easy, fast, stretchy and gives the same effect and I never hear anyone else using it. Those are my opinions. I truly enjoy your podcast, you are adorable, I love your aesthetic and creativity. Take care. Bridget

So enjoyable! You are going to love wrapping yourself up in your Half and Half Triangles Wrap on those chilly days. Also, I tend to think of knitted "bras" more like the "corset covers" of the late 19th century, a decorative layer...unless you are someone who really doesn't need a bra in the first place.

Death sticks lol nice. As far as subscriptions/mystery yarn, I already struggle with using my stash up so I don't want to add yarns to it that I may never use just for the fun of the mystery. With one exception! I really do enjoy yarn Advent calendars. So I treat myself to one a year even though it's against my better judgment because opening a yarn every day makes me very happy. I started doing this during the first holiday season of the pandemic and it really helped to lift my spirits so I keep doing it now. However, I do try and be careful who I choose from because while there are a lot of pretty yarns I don't tend to use variegated or speckled yarns very often and usually those are the special themed indie dyer ones I see. The one I have coming this year is coffee themed, so I figured I'm going to get a lot of blacks and browns and I'm down with that!

Actually, I live in Florida, and am knitting a Half & Half Triangles Wrap! I’m heading to the North Carolina mountains in a couple weeks, so I’m looking forward to finishing it. And I totally agree with you, that it’s such a meditative knit, I can knit on it at night, after all day of knitting mind boggling patterns! Just my thoughts! Love your podcasts! ❤️

I'm so glad to hear that not everyone enjoys mohair! I only started knitting less that a year ago and in the beginning I had A LOT of troubles because i'm sensitive to mohair and almost each pattern I liked used second strand.

I agree I rarely ever use mohair, it is soft to me but I just don’t like it much. I am using siri on one project now because the sleeves are one strand of it but that’s the extent 😂 Also I like knitted bras but I got medium/smallish tata’s but I use it as an extra warmth layer not for support!

Hilarious episode! I just cast on my first project with mohair and…meh. It will probably be dated within the next year. Glad to know I’m not alone in my mohair ambivalence (or my other unorthodox knitting opinions as well)!

So many good takes here! 😄 My opinion on walking and knitting: Walking for me is pretty much a "dead time" like a commute by bus or train or something. You don't usually have to use your hands while walking, so why not just make it more productive? I usually carry around a small and easy stockinette project everywhere I go so I just grab it whenever I get the opportunity. I also sometimes read while walking and never lose my attention to the walking and traffic around me, so no worries. This is strictly limited to the summer months because my hands get really cold too fast 😔 About those shawls: I love shawls, or shlankets, but you know what I don't understand? COWLS! Maybe I'm just overly sensitive to cold air on my neck but wearing something that's supposed to be around your neck but barely touches you skin doesn't make any sense to me 😆 There are certain cowl patterns that I like and would love to knit but I already know that I couldn't use the piece eventually.

I don’t understand cowls that hang like a necklace. I want it to hug my neck and keep it warm if im going to wear one. I’ve only made one so far, which was the shift by Andrea mowry and that’s mostly because it looked more like a shawl I didn’t have to fuss with or style but its generous enough to keep my shoulders warm.

@@Plantsandmusicandyarn But would you consider it neck-warming enough? I love the Shift and also the Inclinations cowl but I'm afraid I'll never wear it.

@@theyarningvoid it feels pretty similar to wearing a shawl. I did make mine out of DK yarns vs sport so it turned out bigger than it was supposed to. And I’m pretty petite.. so it doesn’t sit super close to my neck but definitely keeps my shoulders warm!

I do like knitted bras. I have a smaller size so I can see why it does work for me and not for everyone. Sometimes I wear them as crop top over yoga bra, but usually I wear them under my t-shirt during sweater weather as a bra. It add some heat and I like how they feel, like they hug my chest. And I put layers on so I don't mind the lack of padding. But I don't wear them as a bra during the summer or when I need more support.

I definitely sent one about wearing shawls.. I have a hard time wearing them with my wardrobe, but I love seeing people wear them! I definitely wear a blanket trailing behind me around the house so maybe I do need a shawl haha.

I also personally don’t swatch since I have crocheted before knitting I know that I have very loose tension and so I just size down my needles and I usually do top down garments and clothing like my first clothing being socks and I just removed a few stitches from the original pattern to make it more tight around my feet. I have also crocheted sweaters by going down a hook size and it works like a charm

Naked knits wrap bra, I used KFO silk with a wide elastic in the band - I was surprised at how secure the ladies are in it! Now I haven't worn bras since I was a teenager because I hate them, especially wired and padded ones so my idea of support might be different but I can do yoga in my wrap bra, be upside down and have no spillages 😅 I also use it as crop top in the summer and for underneath loose fitting tops like my outline tank by Jessie Mae. I think the elastic is key though and making it a bit smaller than you think you'll need in anticipation of it stretching out.

I'm chronically ill, live in a badly insulated appartment, and our winters are nasty. Not because they are very cold, but because of the humidity. Humid cold is THE WORST, especially if you have joint problems. I spend most of the winter wrapped in many layers of wool and fleece, and knitted bra's add a nice extra layer of warmth. I especially like racerback bra's, for keeping my back warm. But as a crop top, they're a totally silly idea. I tried wearing them like that in the summer, since all the hip girls are doing it. Had to take it off immediately, because it was waaaay too hot. Makes you wonder if others are just doing it because it's the popular thing to do, and not because they actually enjoy wearing woolen garments in the summer.

i use knitted bras as tops in the summertime, and as an undershirt in the colder months! I hate regular bras, especially ones with an underwire and I just need a little something under the shirt to hide my nips and smooth out the silhouette. Personal preference ;)
