Hi Kaci! When I made the Sophie Scarf I put a lightbulb stitch marker at my increases/decreases. That made it easy to count.

I did the same thing and it made it a pretty mindless knit! I knit it just to use up a stash yarn but it’s now my favorite shawl to wear since it’s wide enough around the neck to cover my nose but the thinner ends don’t add too much bulk when tucked under my very hefty winter coat (I live in Canada).

Ditto! I used one of those swirly ring markers by cocoknits and moved it up at each increase/decrease (so there wouldn't be a million hanging there).

I love when I don’t have to search…I hate reading menus to…too many choices. 😂 I love your aesthetic, so it’s perfect if you choose my projects for me.🤩 I know what you mean about the Sophie shawl, I’m almost finished with mine and increases were driving me crazy. Then I realized I could just move a stitch marker every time I increased. So I eyeball it and don’t try to count those invisible increases. Hey Kaci! I completely know what you mean about keeping track of increases on the Sophie Scarf. In fact I have a funny story about it. I bought some orange yarn from Magpie Fibers when I was fortunate to visit their store in Maryland.....coming from Alaska, this a real treat. I bought the orange because GG just happened to be there that day and she bought a skein (and has since made a Sophie Scarf with it) and I thought it would be a fun way to commemorate meeting her. So I cast on! And yes, I had a hard time keeping track of increases. Finally ripped backed and used stitch markers every time I made an increase. But I put them on the icord and then counted the icord for the number of rows that it says in the pattern before the next increase. I was chugging right along happy as a clam. Then I started on the decreases and thought, wow, this is really long and it is using up way too much yarn. It is only then I realized that by counting on the icord, where every other row is slipped, I was making the spaces between the increases and decreases twice the length they should be. FROGGED. Perhaps I will try again but not for a bit!!!! Love your podcasts. I always smile when I see one pop up!

Here to say - make the Sophie Scarf! Find whatever way works best to keep track on the increases, I used pen & paper, but if you’ve got a row counter use that! It is so worth it, I wear this scarf more than any of my other shawls/scarves/cowls! I’m rooting for you!

Hi Kaci, thanks for all the suggestions on new shawls, cowls and scarves. I also had problems remembering where to increase on my Sofie scarf. To keep track of the rows I weave a piece of yarn back and forth after every increase. To start, count 4 garter stitch ridges (don’t miss the one directly under the needle). After a few increases have been worked you can tell at a glance that it is time to work an increase row. This tip makes the knitting totally mindless. No row counter or pencil and paper required. Also designates RS edge. I also use this for sleeve increases.

Love your Verticies Unite. I have made several of them. The smaller size is a great stash buster.

Hi. Love your podcast, and all this amazing ideas for scarf/shawlknits 🤩 When you talked about the sofieshawl I just want to give you a tip that have helped me a lot. To keep track of the round I take a stitchmarker at the beginning of the round, after the 1. stitch = 1. round, then move it at the next round = second round and so on. When you at back on 1. round in the repeat you start from scratch with the marker 😀

It was too adorable when you started singing your version of Cher's "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" ...and you sounded great! I love your spirit. And *of course* your makes! I've got the Vertices lined up so it was great seeing yours (lovely)👍🏾 I've made the 'smaller' (ha!) Half and Half (Rosewood Pink & Stonewall Gray) and I'm nearly finished a larger one (CO 220 st) in Kiln Red & Stillwater Blue. It's a slog at the end, but worth it. I love the other Purl Soho piece (the cowl) you showed. So many projects to make... Thank you for all your content that is so very inspiring and enjoyable.

Funnily enough I’ve been knitting for 20 years and I’ve only knit maybe 5 scarves, shawls have my heart! My husband will ask do you need another shawl? Immediate death stare 😂

Hi Kaci, love your podcast, projects and demeanor. When I knit the Sophie scarf I kept a marker on the increase side AND used a ring-style counter. Love that counter style. The rows are so short it’s a pain to reach for a counter and I agree it’s hard to remember what row you’re on without keeping track. I also saw a tip in IG where they threaded a piece of yarn vertically every time they increased. But that still means we need to be able to recognize an increase row.

I had the same problem by knitting Sophie Scarf.I place a stitchmarker on the second stitch on increasing end and count every stitch as two rows. I've knitted two so far and I'm getting ready for more or for a Shawl.And Half and Half Wrap is a piece I wear most often .As a wrap or as a lap blanket at home or as my travel blanket.Love it. Kaci, loved your choices. Gave me more ideas. Knit the Moondrake Cowl- I got the pattern when it first came out- got right to knitting it- OH MY, such a fun knit. I used BFL wool which I love. This knits up so very quickly- and couldn't be easier. Go for it

Hi Kaci! Love your channel always so inspiring. I’ve knit 5 of the Sophie scarves and am now working on the Sophie shawl. I place a light bulb marker at each increase / decrease and then just count the rows. Also, the smaller size of Sophie scarf is perfect for children. I’ve knit several for my 5 year old granddaughters.

I think it helps to mark the increases with a removable marker. Have three on hand and insert the first into your first increase and the second into the second (of course). You can now insert the third into your third increase and always see if the distance between the markers is the same. Move the lowest one up into the next increase and so on. At some point you will know how many garter ridges are to be seen between increase rows and if becomes super easy. Go for it, girl, you can do it!

Hey there Kaci, I’m from texarkana, not far from you!! Just found you and enjoyed both episodes. I think the Myak is pronounced My-yak. My husband used to be a beekeeper. Loved it, but now we live in town. People blame all bee aggravations on the local beekeeper. As if that’s the only place they can be found! Thank you for a good episode on cowls, scarves and shawls. Absolutely wonderful episode. Thank you so much! I was marveling at all of your brainpower in putting so many potential projects together.

For keeping track of what row. You are on, Norman of Nimble Needles gave an invaluable tip (for me, at least) using a light bulb marker. On row or round one, knit first stitch and pm. Next round move marker to after st 2, if rows I move marker over 2 st on odd rows. I use this for everything now and save so much time! Much better explanation from Norman.

I’ve made More Simple Lines twice now and love it. It’s a free pattern, knits up into a large cozy shawl and has some simple eyelet rows, purl bump rows and lots of stockinette. I knit it once for my niece in a superwash and once for a friend in a very rustic wool. Both turned out beautifully. Thanks for all your suggestions, I will definitely be checking out some of them. Particularly loved the Sojourner….

“🎤Cowls, Scarves, and shawls” 🙌🏼

I’ve made like four or five Sophie shawls. I found a method that works really well for me. I use a locking stitch marker on the increase /decrease side. It’s actually on the needle not in the fabric. What I do is I move the marker one stitch to the left on each right side row that I don’t increase or decrease. When I’m doing the increases I have four stitches (2 edge plus increase stitches) there on the increase row. Then when I knit back to the next right side row, I move it one. So now I have five, and again on the next row so there’s six. When I’m knitting back and I see that there’s six stitches I know that I need to increase on the next row and move my marker back so there’s only four and so on. For the decrease rows I do the same thing, but I have three stitches for the decrease and then four ,then five. When I see the five stitches on my wrong side row I know I my next row I need to decrease again and move my marker back so there’s only three. It’s great because I don’t have to count rows I just have to remember to move that marker every time I’m doing a right side row. I didn’t mess it up even one time once I started that method.

First time viewer here. Love the colors in your Vertices Unite! I have one on the needles from a couple years ago and I stalled out because of my colors…maybe I need to get it out and tweak it because I really love the finished shawl. Your color palettes for all your plans are beautiful as well.

I'm knitting the Sophie Shawl right now, I'm using a row counter, and I start it over every time I increase. That's the only way I can possibly keep track of it, and I still sometimes get distracted by what I'm watching and forget to tap the counter. I put a progress keeper on the right side, and a stitch marker on the end where I increase. That way I have some indication of what row I'm on, and if I forget to tap the counter. The right side is the even number rows, and the side I increase on. Those are my tips. My shawl is almost done. Another tip, pay close attention to the edges, if they're messed up, the shawl will look very homemade.

Hi there. I'm knitting the Sophie shawl as we speak and use the app Row counter to keep up with my in- and decreases. It has the feature to set a reminder and that works a treat. Very easy, and pleasant knitting

I used a clicker to keep track of my rows while working on my Sophie shawl. That being said you need to remember to click the clicker! It’s worth the effort though. It’s the perfect size shawl for me to wear with a winter coat…not too bulky or oversized. I’m definitely making another one!

I am currently doing the Bricklane Shawl from Noro with Hanui Silk. It is a beautiful shawl. The yarn is amazing and I don’t want to put it down. Love this episode.

Hi Kaci....thank you for the inspiration - you covered many of my favorites. I must admit, I frogged the whole Sophie scarf due to my scatter brained increases........so, since then, I saw on one podcast where the knitter used a running stitch along the side so you know how many rows were knit in between the increases - added as increases were done and the decreases were done. I like the comment below with the light bulb marker. I was so bummed that I could NOT SEE the increases or decreases....so, here we go, ribbit, ribbit........I will make it again and next time, knit smarter. Stay warm - happy knitting.🧶

Use a removeable stitch marker! I've made 2 sophie scarves and 1 shopie shawl, and using the stitch marker made it so much easier. I also knit all 3 in the same month. The sophie shawl is currently my favorite knit and I am wearing it all the time! I want a second one now.

We like the same things! Moonwake cowl ... my most worn knit ever. I made it in a silky dk .. eden cottage yarns .. no 3 colour rows. Birds of a feather. Beautiful but not worn much. I used camarose midnatsol instead of mohair as I can't cope with mohair either. Worked well. Recollect cowl. On the frog pile. Gorgeous pattern but my yarn ...Rosa polar brusca .. is making it rock solid with no drape. Love your podcasts!

I’ve knit a Sophie scarf and I love it! I knit that thing in a day. So versatile too! I had heard people say that keeping up with the increases was a challenge before knitting it so I knew going into it that I just needed to keep track. Once I got to the increases, I would do an increase and then keep track of rows with a row counter, do an increase and reset the row counter and repeat. That made it very easy for me to keep track. Plus I kept a stitch marker on the side where you need to do increases.

Hi Kaci, I totally understand what you mean about the Sophie Shawl. When I made mine, I used a stitch marker for every increase row ( after restarting it a few times because I missed it!) so I could see they were made evenly and I could count them. The decrease part is a lot easier as you can see the little bumps of the decreases. I wear it all the time so I personally would say you should make it. ❤

For the sophie shawl, I just put my marker on the row of the increase or decrease each time, so i always knew where I was, I just had to count the bump of the garter stich, between the previous increase/decrease and the row i'm at, super easy :)

I used a bright piece of contast yarn and draped it around the increase stitch …easy to remove and move it along :)

Oh my word. The Sophie scarf ….. glad you mentioned this. I thought I had lost my mind. I am in my60’s… knitting since 10 years old. 4-H girl here learning all at home crafts-from leaders as well my Grandmas. ( but my favorite 4-H projects were my Beef Cattle, Polled Herefords). I managed to flub up this thing and ripped it all the way back at half point as I am completely picky. Set out to figure out what I managed mistake wise. Ugh… disappointed disruptions. Think. So now am using a clicking row counter…. And with every 6 row ( next row WS), I know on row 8 I increase. Think this has helped me… mantra. Hope this helps. I like I really do like the scarf but this pattern is not for my brain. ( still on clue 3 on Stephen west MKAL 10/2022. I am a stubborn gal and I will finish…. But I just did finish Snowy Forest and 2 hats for my husband in the midst of the shawl…. Have to release myself for other cast on’s of pure pleasure. Thank you for today. Another pure pleasure!❤

I completely agree with your comments on the Sophie scarf. I was holding together a fingering and mohair and went crazy keeping up with the increases especially with the tv going! I had to rip it out and haven't started again, waiting for the mood to strike!!

On the sophie shawl, I put a silver light bulb stitch marker on the increase. I did this 4 times. On the 5th one, I used a gold stitch marker. Then, I just laddered these same 5 stitch markers up the side of the shawl on the increases. My gold stitch marker always needed to land on a stitch count having a multiple of 5. This is a process I started when I had a multiple of 5 stitches on the needle. I think you actually start the shawl with 6 stitches so just be sure to keep that in mind. 5 was arbitrary though-you could really just use two. 5 helped me know if I messed up my counting.

I had the same issue with the Sophie Scarf. I placed a stitch marker on the increase rows. This helped me stay on track.

I feel your pain with the Sophie shawl I'm glad I'm not the only one. In the end I used a tally on a post it note and that did the trick.

I made the small Sophie scarf using Knit Companion. It’s great for tracking rows, you can even mark through them to keep track. Love all the shawls you showed and I do want to make the larger Sophie Shawl. Happy Knitting 🧶
