Now I want to knit all the shawl shapes!! Here’s something I learned when knitting my first shawl, the Drachenfels. I hated the tightness of my increase edge. I read lots of project notes on Ravelry, and a number of folks suggested doing a yarn-over on the row previous to the increase, ‘behind’ where that increase will be made. When you reach that yarn-over on the increase side, you simply drop the yarn-over, which gives some extra ease for working the increase. Hope that makes sense!

What a fabulous tip! That would work well for so many shawls. Thanks for sharing it (I'm definitely adding that to my 'ways to get a stretchy edge' list!).

I enjoy swatching. I usually wind up using the yarn I used for the swatching in my project. But though i like swatching and getting gauge, i do not check my gauge as I go because I just want to continue to add length and make progress in my comfy chair which is no where near a flat surface and a ruler/tape measure. I had to pull back an entire raglan sweater because the gauge towards the bottom was loose while the top was tight. 😂

Thank you for all this information. I’ve recently decided that for the next year I’m going to focus on shawls. Did you say you have a book on shawls?

I don't have a book on shawls but have a few that I like - Kate Atherley's Shawls for Curious and Creative Knitters and Melissa Leapman's Modular Shawls are two of my favorites.

I really hate the garter tab start to shawls. I can never figure out where to pick up the stitches and it’s hard to tell if I’m doing it correctly. My shawls usually look ok but I’m not comfortable with this start. My most frequent mistake is a accidentally knitting in the row below or picking up the bar and it creates a hole. I can never figure out how to drop down and fix this. I end up ripping all the way back. Ugh!

@ Cee Cee Are you having trouble picking up at the garter bumps on the side or at the short cast on edge? I hated how mine looked when I picked up from the cast on edge of the tab. I started using a provisional cast on to neaten things up. I have also used Judy’s Magic Cast on, like starting a toe up sock on two needles. I knit the tab from one needle and leave the stitches live on the other needle, unworked until I come back around to that point.
