@John-G I do hope no-one is offended by what was intended as gentle humour! Perhaps I am old enough to remember Thelwell's wonderful (and very popular) cartoons of pony girls. I get the impression that in modern times riding is not very popular among boys and young men, but still very popular among girls and young women. I moved to Surrey from the West Country 3 years ago, and in trying to find somewhere that would sell a waxed jacket I found that the few shops selling country outdoor clothing were oriented almost exclusively towards young female riders.

It simply isn't their role. A very, very few will transfer to 'mainstream' RA but they seldom return to King's Troop afterwards. The only exception are the officers who are posted in for a two year tour, but in this case she hasn't. The medals are Jubilee, Coronation or LS medals, not operational medals. That's not knocking them at all, it's just what they do.

@@stevestratton2622 Your 5 year old may be more used to the effects of the drink. I assume you're talking about the MoD Police. They're not paramilitaries - if you want to sound 'in', the Army's called them MoD Plod for fifty years. They wear a similar Union Flag based flash to the one a lot of the Army wore on MTP / CS 95 in and post Balkans, in various shades of drab, grey and green, at unit discretion, until it was factory-sewn on jackets around 2009 (after my time). I've no idea why they wear it any more than I have why the British Army wear one in Britain, particularly given the unit flashes and bde flashes that already make them look a bit 'boy scouty', but unless that was a similar problem for you, why the problem now with MoD Plod? and what's with the "bravery badge" bit? Aren't they all wearing it? Or only the ones brave enough to?

Australia tried it with gays when they'd accepted gays in the military before the UK, sending at least one openly gay officer I knew of on an exchange post - he was simply RTU'd and the post closed, which was a lose-lose all round.
