Young Sardine Fishing and Processing Dry Fish - Japanese Traditional Dry Fish

"Chirimenjako" (dried young sardines) are young Japanese anchovies and Japanese pilchards boiled in salted water and then dried in the sun or using a machine. When the water content after drying is less than 50%, these dried sardines are called chirimenjako.

It looks like white bait in New Zealand. The white bait here is quite expensive and we just mix it with egg with salt and pepper then fry. We call it white bait fritters and it's delicious.

But, doesn't capturing these fish at such a young age, and on a large scale, harm the preservation of these species and immensely affect an entire ecosystem? As we have seen, entire shoals are captured.

How much would a whale eat? So many whales were hunted, many are still recovering their population. Are there more small fish because whales don't catch so many?

  • @felixmarinho2629

I think it's best not to go into the issue of whales, which, as we all know, are still hunted indiscriminately in Japan, just like dolphins and sharks, to remove their measly fins. As for fishing for whole schools of these young fish, I stand by my opinion.

Great content but hardly a sensible way to eat. Not good for the future of the sardine population but, hey, the Japanese population is heading for old age and poverty with their ageing population and when their car industry is destroyed as well maybe it doesn't matter - except to the Japanese
