This show is called Onyx Equinox for anyone that’s curious. Kind of underrated in my opinion. Definitely worth at least checking out because it’s so rare to have a show inspired by Aztec mythology. Usually fantasy shows are very knights or samurai inspired. This show was a change up we need more of.

Minor corrections: The "Demon King" is simply another god, Mictlantecuhtli - the Aztec god of the underworld. The other gods are angry because Mict is essentially taking all the human sacrifices for himself and leaving them without tributes.

Crazy that a recap that didn't even have a title of the show on KZread gets 100,000's of views when this got nothing but hate when it came out.

I think people need to keep in mind that this anime is based on not only Aztec mythology, but also their traditions and culture. Human sacrifice was a part of it. I actually find it more realistic that they included sacrifices and show gods upset over tribute’s because that’s exactly what would happen according to the culture. I’m of course not for human sacrifices but I can appreciate the attention to detail.

Human sacrifice during the Aztec era was found to be a form of governmental corruption in that many of the priests and scholars were able to predict certain weather and solar patterns such as eclipses to use as propaganda for said sacrifices and retain power over the populace.

The irony of this comment

Mictlantecuhtli was not a demon lord, but he was the Aztec God of Death. He's represented as having an almost skeletal appearance. I like the fact that it shows the Aztec belief that if they did not sacrifice constantly, then they thought the world would come to an end as they knew it. This is why they kept conquering and exacting tribute in the form of captives for human sacrifice. Archaeologists believe that they sacrificed up to 20,000 people per year, on average, but some years they sacrificed even more than that.

Actually its a bit more complicated. If we could. Those humans would be still alive or at least the corpses remain intact. They were not killed cause we wanted them to be killed. If you paid attention you can see that each individual god who took a human form, the body was mutating and changing to reflect the traits of the gods and also collapsing on itself depending on the god. In my case the child form was changing to reflect my traits. Feathers, Scales, and the iris of a snake and my trademark smile. However due to these changes the body ability to hold together would eventually fail resulting in them simply falling apart as they cannot hold the essence of a god for too long.

@@skeaneable they tried to make it "adult themed ATLA" I remember watching an interview where the creators was like "ATLA doesn't have blood and gore and their show has blood and gore" like that's what makes a good story. Lol. The story was kinda bad and lackluster. It was a good premise but it wasn't executed well.. mediocre animation, wasted potential basically. And it's sad cos i was actually hyped for it. I waited till the first episode dropped on Crunchyroll. it was the reason i subscribed to crunchyroll even, only for it to disappoint me.
