You Won't BELIEVE What Is Lurking Behind These Sills! - Disaster Datsun Restoration
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Welcome to another episode of the Disaster Datsun. We end up cutting into some decent looking sills to expose some absolute horror! This Disaster just keep on giving!
Rust rust and more rust is what we find, and yet more patch panels! We will have replaced most of this car by the time we are done! But the main thing is, we are getting there one step at a time. Little by little this Disaster is becoming less of a Disaster.
Hope you do enjoy the video, and if you do, please consider smashing that like and subscribe button as it does really help us out alot!

It really does, we cut the rest of the sill off in the next video! It's grim! Thanks!
You could fix that sill with a bit of gauze and some fibre glass filler. Keep the tradition of the 1970's going. It is amazing how times have changed. Many cars of this era, the panels were not even primed or treated inside the enclosed sections. They did, and do, rot from the inside. This is like a "magic carpet", there was nothing holding the floor up.

Doing the repair that way makes it sound miles easier! These were very bad for rot like you say! and now we see it years later. Thanks for commenting!
I don't know if you're aware of this, but there should probably be jacking point strengthening plates sandwiched between the inner and outer sills at the front and rear of the door openings. At least, there are on the 2 seat coupe 260z, so I assume the 2+2 is likely the same. I only mention it because it looks like it's rotten to the point that it's difficult to tell anything was ever there to begin with.

Hey Ryan, sorry, but feel the need to comment on the comments. Just read the John Alexander comment and am gobsmacked to be honest. How anyone who obviously has the basic knowledge to use a computer or similar device connected to the internet can possibly comment like that just beats me. Speaking for the other 99.99% of people who are subscribed to your channel, you are simply inspirational in what you do. I am 70 now, an amateur restorer, and you give us all so much hope, because you show us what actually can be tackled without giving up on the project. So many commenters are missing the point on this one. You bought the car, took too much notice of the (quite obviously either deluded or totally dishonest) previous owner, knew you had your work cut out, but didn't think it could possibly be as bad as it is. You then decided to plough on with it and push yourself to see what could be achieved. If it were a customer's car, things would have to be different, but it is your own and therefore it is not about the money, it is all about the challenge. Also, let's not forget that most of us think it is a brilliant addition to the KZread content and look forward to every instalment. Ignore the negative comments, carry on doing what you are doing.

Ryan, the more I see of your expose on structured air gaps, the more I love the channel. Oh to be 55 or more years younger, and knocking on the door of YCR, to seek an apprenticeship! As previously stated, we don't have the degree of rust issues in Oz, but then again, even here, these, Fiats and Alfas hold a pretty good mortgage on the ferrous cancer! Looking forward to many more issues to follow and I for one, will be disappointed to see it finished; but then again. I know you will have a yard full of subsequent disasters to follow and we can learn from!

Living up to its name...DISASTER😱. Looking forward to the fabrication, keep up the good work👍
You are basically building a brand new Datsun. You are not anymore patching rust holes. Instead you build a car around patches of metal that were forgotten by rust. It's just amazing.
"intresting to see what's under here" , more like bloody terrifying! - more courage than sense when it comes to this Datsun - but we're so glad you're doing it - Brilliant work as ever

It must be so frustrating when you are so good at what you do, sadly there are these cowboys that botch vehicles and create death traps, you should be proud that you are getting the right message across, at least anybody who employs you to repair their car can rest assured it has been repaired properly and it is safe, first class workmanship 👍👍👍
Your commitment to this project is outstanding. The bodges you are uncovering would have broken most people. I cant stop watching; its like a train wreck, only the train comes back better and stronger than ever.
People say there is light at the end of the tunnel - no that’s just another rusty hole being exposed - one day Ryan this will all be over!

Remember kids. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should ;). Every video - well it can’t get much worse. Well…. Good on ya for trying to save this car. Not too many left after all these years. The 2+2’s are very unloved but still deserving of saving. I had a 74 260z that I sold about 11 years ago. Definitely one of this cars I wish I’d never sold. It was extremely clean though it did need floor pans. Prices have gone crazy on them, even before the covid tax. My husband even said had he known prices would’ve gone up like this he wouldn’t have pushed to sell it.
A thought came drifting down the ponderous river... Do you ever come to a point, where you say; "OK, that's it. You win. It's not worth it." ? But please, don't stop! It's very entertaining...!

Hi Ryan, you are like a miner searching for gold in this job. I am enjoying these videos. The look on your face says it all. Great work and thanks for bringing us along it’s this.
The depth to which you go is amazing. My 1962 A40 was built out of aluminium, self tappers and paste. Home Mig welding was not a thing then, 1968 ish, but I wish I could go back in time and do it right. A big workshop is also an advantage. IN 1971 the MOT guy said enough and the car died. Things have got so much better for the home enthusiast to mend their cars
Lovely. I moved on to doing a nice big, simple Merc bus - it's like a breath of fresh air compared to the cars. :-) Doddle!

I used to work at the Datsun main dealership in the late 70s early 80s when these cars were about. They used to start falling apart about 4 years old. Great car at the time apart from the fact they were rot boxes.😢
I don't know where you find the strength or motivation to keep going? Hats off to you for keeping at it! What a ride.

They must have done!! haha, we do need to know where!
Just unending work with little sight of light at the end of the tunnel. It must be difficult to keep going but you will an get there in the end.
I know exactly what's going through your mind, l had the exact same scenario with an MGB GT many years ago which as you probably know were complete rot boxes especially the floors and sills, you get to the point when you think there is just no point carrying on with this bloody car! So you walk away for a couple of days then start again as you feel you've gone this far you carry on cutting out the rot fabricating new pieces to weld in. Keep at it you will get there in the end then you realise it was worth all the blood sweat and swearing.
Love what you guys do. The Datsun however is a total nightmare. How can you do this without using a jig? is anything going to match up? Keep it up guys nice to see so many oldies being restored.
You'll get there. Is it time to bang in some bracing though? Not much left now holding the structure together

I had some bracing in when i removed as it was just getting the way. but in the next episode i put some bracing back in to hold it straight. I will also check the doors etc to make sure things fit before properly welding. Thanks

Exactually! The next Datsun video is even worse than this :O
You're basically building a new Datsun at this point, lol
Amazing! Do thinks that in hindsight sending the car for blasting or dipping to ‘see what you had before starting would have been best? Admire your determination to carry on because this really has past its best.
Go you one better: Had a 1977 Firebird where they used kids play clay for the corner sections of the trunk, then slapped bondo over the lot… Was a wonderful Flintstone car…😂
I'm a new viewer so not sure where you are in this project. I'm guessing you are going to get the joy of doing this all over again on the other side. : )
All the best this is scary. I would be really concerned about how I would accurately create the inner will sub structure so the outer is then correct. I have an Austin Atlantic convertible to repair and I know the inner sills are bad. At least it's original bad which helps with templates. All the best.
Hi, That's not a Disaster Datsun, I believe I recognize a Dusty Crumb, we see less and less driving this car on our roads...You have merit Ryan! Seems to me, you're spending more time sweeping than welding these days.
Wonder whats behind here????? I think you know whats behind there before the grinder comes out of the box! I think I will increase my gross weight figure from 300 to 500Kg lighter at the end of the work. It might even become a fast Datsun when finished. Chin up and keep going.
There’s also a thought that the car must have been loved to be sent to the shop over and over again. Having said that, this car is halfway through its last life
Wygląda znajomo 👍
Imagine dipping that shell.... you'd have been fishing it out in a dozen pieces.... 🤣
The rust on this Datsun transcends all, "Kill the child, corrupt them all!" 😆 If they hadn't double-triple-quantupled layered it, it wouldn't have been this bad, not even by a long shot. I think by the 3rd time we can read their thoughts "Oh sod it, no use fighting what it has become" and put it on there 😂
I keep wondering, did you ever expect it to be so bad... And then at the 12:25 min. mark, you clarify the situation nicely. Is it possible to source any of these panels to save yourself some work fabricating from scratch? Not only for this side, but surely the other one as well? Good luck as always...
You Won't BELIEVE What Is Lurking Behind These Sills! It's rust isn't it?

Fantastic work. Is this a customer car or one of your own?
I'm working on a Mercedes W114 coupe at present which has been on going for almost 2 years, and is just as bad as that. But at least someone took the time to weld the dodgy patches in place on the Datsun. . On the car I'm doing ,the sills were made from expanding foam, shaped then coated with bitumen. 😦😦 The seats weren't even fixed to the car because there wasn't a floor. .
@Ragnar8504
Жыл бұрын
The foam sounds like Furious Driving's Crown Vic. The NSU Ro80 that Lawrie of LMM looked at once was close to this nightmare level too though - aluminium panels pop riveted and screwed over extensive structural rot.
Ok I am going to ask. With all of the rust and panel replacement would it not have been more cost effective to source replacement panels for what could be and then fab up the need other bits and bobs?
i think it will polish out
I'd say weigh it in for scrap but theres not a lot of metal to scrap. Gives me palpitations looking at it. Good luck !
That'll polish out
