Finding Crazy Amounts of Filler On The Back & Hand Fabricating New Rear Sills - Disaster Datsun
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Sometimes, there are just no words to describe what is actually going on with this classic Disaster Datsun 260z. We fabricate and tack in the lower sill and corner section, but then are faced with the disastrous rear panel section which we have to somehow repair.
Thankfully Resurrected Classics have absolutely hooked us up and send us the whole rear panel for the Disaster Datsun. Let me tell you, this is a very good quality panel and this will absolutely transform the back of this car.
Thanks so much to Resurrected Classics for sending us this masterpiece of a panel, if you do want to check out what they have, use the link below:

Thankfully the sill went on good and that is 1 less disaster to tackle. In the next video we will dive into that rear panel section and try to make some sense of it.
Thanks for watching, I do hope you enjoyed!

Came for the Matt Armstrong Rusted BMW .... stayed for the Opel Manta / Red BMW / Escort RS2000/ Porsche 911 and of course the Disaster Datsun -- I think I am hooked on YCR. warning : This channel is addictive.

The ancient Yorkshire art of folding metal to make cars - Oricarmi 👍🏼
Only the most elite car restorers angle grind bubble rap, Great video!
Restoration is the key word for this vehicle, but at times it does seem like ‘remanufacture’. Fantastic job regardless, totally gobsmacked at the quality of work that goes into your builds and the video quality we all enjoy is outstanding. Thank you so much 😊❤🇦🇺
I think this thing might be te first car made entirely out of body filler and rust.

Oh, surely not. Some years ago I watched a Peugeot 504 of which the owner proudly told me ‚no weldings‘ … he was quite right. The whole heap of rust was completely packed in TONS of bondo… 😢

I can’t see how this car is worth saving even if it was free the amount hours, weld wire, sheet metal it requires. You cannot recover any where near that when time comes to sell it.

Ryan, for you it`s a disaster. For us it`s a present to watch your videos and craftsmanship!
What the hell is the thinking behind covering so much of the car with filler. - looks like pretty decent panels have had it smeared all over them as well. As usual your skills just amaze me they genuinely do. Your a wizard Ryan!
Hello 👋 my good friend Ryan buddy it's been a pleasure watching you work on that Datsun..I have bad news to report my aunt passed away this morning she is the aunt that gave me the jaguar I got to see her yesterday at the hospital and got to talk to her she was in and out of conscious..
Found the channel a few weeks ago, fantastic!! Binge watch the suzuki rebuild, now caught up, when will you be doing the engine etc on the suzuki? Addicted to the channel. Yorkshire Car Restorrrrrrrrations!!
Ryan!!! We are in the Datsun rust fight together bro!!! Just when I thought that the filler couldnt get any worse, the rear panel showed otherwise 😂 We are determined to keep in the fight!! That rear panel looks amazing!! Congrats on the channels growth bro!! You guys are crushing it!!!!
this car is living up to it's name !! even with all the welding done on this car it' going to be lighter than when you got it
I don’t think I have ever thought of opening a box with an angle grinder, but that’s probably because I’ve never had an angle grinder to hand when opening a box. Excellent out of the box thinking.❤
When I was a kid, my dad borrowed a beat up 1973 Toyota Corona coupe, it got so many fender bender damages exposing thick up to 1/4" of body fillers. I had seen so many classic cars they just dumped body filler on seam lines and panel gaps (for example the fenders are now fused to the body) I just grow up to hate body fillers.
I’d take a break from that door shut too. So easy to get bogged down on one part. You’ll get there in the end.
Really surprised Ryan. You are usually a Superstar at sweeping up, but there's a heap of rubbish under the Datsun. Quite humorous to see you slip on the hammer, but you could have hurt yourself so try to keep your tools out of the way. We don't want to be deprived of videos while you recover 😊. Stellar work as usual, and that panel looks great: hope that it also fits. The panel might be right and the body distorted.
Honestly, it looks like there was someone from planet filler in this car. Fascinating how someone was able to create a whole bodyline just of filler and fibreglass. Better like Ryan is doing now, but think of the huge amount of work someone spent in this car, but in the wrong direction 😂.
Another awesome video Ryan. The Datsun that still... keeps on giving!! 🤣
With all that filler removed, the car should be a lot lighter... Obviously the person that filled everything did it over rust and knew it would show up later on. But that would be someone's else's headache than... Thumbs Up!
Great work as usual Ryan. I bet a magnet wouldn't have stuck to that car anywhere before you started on it. The previous 'restorer' must have had share in Isopon or Upol. Warm regards from Ireland!
Great video 👍Got to be thankful for Resurrected Panels this car shows how repairs used to be done 😮.
Just a final skim coat of filler on the back mate! (lol) ... Glad you've got some quality panels to help out now.
Hi Ryan. I think you’ll never see what I witnessed. Towards the end of the 60s, a friend, a mason, had a Simca 1000 whose floor was completely rotten. He put metal cans of 2 liters and... poured a concrete slab!!🤣
You have far more patience than I, it would have been sent to the scrap bin.
Disaster? That's a fine example of the eighties filler-art[tm]! Surely it would have taken longer to sand than to do the job right? But at least Rocco is looking happy again.
Absolutely brilliant Ryan, keep them coming, best entertainment on KZread by far!

Man you have practically rebodied that car if you were picking a car for video content you got the right one
Love the dd. Keep going think when you do the rear you will have new metal all the way round!!! It's becoming a car again!!
Hi Ryan. I’m a fan in Canada and I have been watching Yorkshire Car Restoration for a few months now. I have marvelled at how meticulous you are, and the amount of care you guys take in all the builds at your shop. I have a question about this car in particular. I was wondering if this is a clients vehicle or if this is your car? Thanks for the great content!! You guys Rock!!🔥😊

Great work Ryan, looking at the amount of "stuff" you've taken out of this car I should be able to put a filler mixing head on a 3D printer and make a whole bodyshell -- lol, also that back panel from Resurrected classics looks really good, I thought it was a genuine part (nos) until you explained.

There are three letters designed to set the pulses racing, if you’re a bloke of a certain age. I’m 63, and have been riding & later restoring Suzuki GT triple motorcycles since 1978. If I see “NOS” anywhere on an original Suzuki box, I more or less have to buy it. NOS exhausts are long gone. But I’ve several for my GT380B & GT750A.
I reckon whoever did that fillimg is now katie prices make artist !
You will have to admit that someone was a expert plastic sculptor.
Great music and fabrication Ryan while checking fit with a door - some time since one of those has been seen - nice to see your first ‘passion’ being worked on again well done
I used to watch all the yankee resto programmes, not anymore. You have become my number one channel and can't wait for the next episode. Yanks don't know what rust is - we do😂
love seeing these things put right
Wish I could afford to ship you my cars for repairs. A little far from the States. Good work, but man!, the rust is massive
This is simply AMAZING to watch. This gives another meaning to "LEAD SLED" only "BONDO SLED". I wander how you keep your cool working on this Disaster Datsun.
Super fabrication skills, there, Ryan, the whole left sill area. Particularly enjoyed watching you solve for the challenges of the lower rear door shut area, where it curves upwards. You see that every time you open the door. I liked the way to did trial fits of two panels, then fully welded & ground back, making a single, seamless panel. As you say, a complete PITA.
Epic work there guys!
Wow , full panel ! Great job !
Your work is big art
Excellent video and once again, superb craftsmanship.
I always enjoy the vids and this was no exception. Keep em coming 😊
Great work on the Datsun
Great video as always.your killing it.kudos 👍👍👍😎😎😎
You should keep all the filler that came out of the Datsun and weigh it at the end to see how much it weighs ,I can't believe how much heavier that car is with all the filler 😂😂 that rear panel looks good 👍
Awesome work lad
Good work and keep it up i wish your channel growth rapidly 👍👍
Another lesson in fabrication Ryan do your stuff bud 👍🏻😉👏
You have almost built a new body 😂👍
6 million dollar car this one. Amazing amount of work. Lovely stuff 😘
Full marks to you again Ryan. Why do people keep harping on about dipping? anyone who understands about car restoring and has actually done it knows why you are approaching this particular car this way. Anyhow, it is getting steadily stronger, lighter and nearer the finish line. New rear panel looks good, but if I were you, I wouldn't trust it to be 100%. You need to get as many original datum points as possible (easier said than done when it has been re-sculptured from filler) and check them against the new panel before welding it in. I have been caught out by this before and it cost me a lot of time and money because I altered what I thought were badly made parts to fit what I thought was a perfectly made panel, only to find that was arse about face.
Good work, still need more consistency with the safety glasses when spot tacking, you only get the one pair of eyes!
Nissan Bondo limited Edition collect all the Bondo filler and weight it great work mate
That's one hell of a lot of filler! The car will so much lighter when finished, although i guess that will be offset by the metal going in to replace the rust!!! 😂 Another good update 👍
I stand by what I said in previous episodes, it WILL be lighter and faster when your finished!
Can I say on restoring the Datsun how many times have you been to A&E with cuts or rust in the eyes the car is incredible
The job of cars soon to be the lovely 240
For those who watched Only Fools and Horses, this car is like Trigger’s broom!
Wow!
Nice work, think you may need a few more panels to get this done.
I'm imagining this man sitting at the dinner table cutting his steak with his angle grinder.
The person that godged that rear panel up must have spent more on filler and fibreglass than a new rear panel would have cost. It would have been lethal if something had run into the back of it. Excellent work as usual Ryan. (I sound like an old school teacher don't I!!)

Never mind the Time taken to fill and Sand it all. It Must have taken Months, where a new panel would've been days to fit😅
You need the patience of a Saint for your job.
don' forget to disconnect the battery before you weld ; )
datson for sale, 2% origional. Some serious work. Will be a great car when done
You are extremely talented I just have 1 question If this car is involved in a serious accident would the structure hold up with all the patch welds
After this massive amount of work will you keep it they are very nice classics mark from nz
I got Porsche 944 in same condition, with similar repairs. I will fix it. But I have to work outside 😅
It occurs to me to ask how much did the previous owners spend on filler to cover up this mass of rust pretending to be a 260Z - wouldn't it have been cheaper to do it right in the first place - anyway Ryan - brilliant work as always
Have you already done an inner rocker/inner sill from scratch ? My 240sx needs complete inner sill. Previous owner cut it from underneath since it was rotten, then he welded exterior rocker but not welded in the buttom since there is no more inner rocker panel 😅 I wonder how I Will do it..
I think to describe the existing chunks of rust & filler as “a rear panel” is probably a misleading description! A full replacement is going to Crispen up Gherkinton rear brilliantly.
how do you decide when to use the spray zinc vs. the goopy grey stuff applied with a brush?
You got to take your hat off to whoever done the filler must have taken ages to sand it down but needs must they kept the car going and at the end of the day the bloody thing is still here even after all these years
Would like to see how much weight was shed with the removal of all the filler.
What is the grey material you are brushing onto the inside of the patch panels?
Love me some disaster Datsun..
A tiny detail of a question, if I may? How did you decide the diameter of the drilled holes, where you are to puddle weld?
What a shed of a car ,
Great work on the Datsun - huge job. Might be a stupid question, but why has all work on the Suzuki stopped?
@yorkshirecarrestoration

Thanks so much. And I only do youtube in ny spare time and have a full time job I'm civil engineering. With us getting Mat Armstrong's E24 in, I've had to put the Suzuki on the back burner for now as I'm struggling to get the time to do it
I wonder if all the removed filler and rust will end up weighing as much as the entire car body does when finished
Are you guys restoring it to its original form or doing a light restomod?
It's hard to believe that this car will have a monetary value commensurate with the hours and hours of high skill work required to restore it. I like the old Z-cars but my first reaction to one with this much rust would be it's a donor car for restoration of a different car without so much rot. I'd be curious to know what all this work would cost.
👍👍👍

Let's take a step back and imagine how much money the last owner invested in body filler. I think with this kind of money they could buy 3x the metal needed to fix it properly.
👍👍
the previous owner was certainly a plasterer by trade😂
My grandfather used to say " when bondo/filler was made, it made a million body men over night".....
I don't know who's paying for this but I would have imported one from Australia & been done with it, I've sold 3 in the last 5 years, 2 to England, 1 to Japan, Rj in Oz
Hi from France. Is it some epoxy you put on your pieces? Courage!
Maybe the previous owner was a bricklayer, - with all that mortar..
Genuinely what i don’t understand is why so much filler on the back panel. I get filling out a rusty wheel arch, but the top horizontal surface below the tailgate shut???? Is there a missing panel thats been recreated with filler? Grateful if you can maybe shed side light in a future video🤔
No comments, I'm just pleasing the algorithm.

in the next video you won't be installing back panel because you have no metal to atach it to :P i watched the whole series in a day and i love ho inconsistenty that proper work is, good luck
Bet you see that in your dreams for years to come 😂
Do you open your presents at Christmas using an angle grinder.😅

Oh - you can eat this car body, it is crunchy 🙂
is there even a rear left to weld on?
